Always Then [VINYL]
Always Then [VINYL]

4.0 out of 5 stars Nice, 22 Mar. 2014
This review is from: Always Then [VINYL] (Vinyl)
Good unpretentious album.
If, like me, you think barbed wire kisses was the best Jesus and Mary chain album and that Echo and the Bunnymen's first four albums are 'the bomb', this is the band for you. More 80s indie than Pysc.
One star off simply because minus one is a better album, that and the slightly misguided Hazelwood cover.

5.0 out of 5 stars best album spacemen 3 never made, 26 Jun. 2013
This review is from: HAZED DREAM (Audio CD)
this takes the first few bars of spacemen3's perfect prescription and makes a beautiful and chilled album. It just floats.

5.0 out of 5 stars music of the future, 11 Mar. 2012
This review is from: I Love You (Audio CD)
Futurism in music usually means it sounds like they thought the future would sound in the 1960s - not here. This music is repetive, undulating, very engaging and unlike anything else out there. Experimental but friendly. Part of no scene / no convenient labels - a true trail blazer. Sound clips are on the thrill jockey web site.

5.0 out of 5 stars even more 60s than the 60s, 9 Sept. 2011
This review is from: Help [VINYL] (Vinyl)
If you play this album along side classics by the seeds or the 13th floor elevators you'd be hard pressed to spot which was recorded most recently, this is a complement! Not copiests, nearer kindred spirits.
Brillinat lo-fi recordings that capture the energy and sheer enjoyment of making the tunes. Some times lo-fi is just another way of saying cheep and unprofessional, not here!
This was my first dip into thee oh sees, so far it's cost me 2 more records and a wish list that keeps growing, a sure sign of qualitity.

4.0 out of 5 stars beta band prog addition, 27 Feb. 2011
This review is from: Luna (Audio CD)
Sounds like the beta band but with a ludicrous amount of time signature shifts. How great that sounds to you probably depends how much you enjoy listening to soft machine.
Good solid album, probably about 2 songs to long. If your new to the band your best off starting with astronomy - considerably easier to access.

4.0 out of 5 stars an alternative, 1 Jan. 2011
Not as rough or demoy as the packaging would have you believe. Mostly it sounds like lower-fi mixes. The tracks arn't hugely different. It would seem the tracks were pretty close to relisation before the production team got hold off them. The biggest difference is the drum sound, far rawer and higher in the mix. Personally I prefer the slightly, and I do meen 'slightly', earthier sound. Monkey house always suffered from over production. So, different, rawer, just not massively so.

5.0 out of 5 stars keep moving forward, 22 Oct. 2010
The next step.
It has the power, aggression and sense of the epic that swans have always had yet it's blended with the subtlety and love that marked the change he made when he started recording as angels of light.
looking forward to the live show.

5.0 out of 5 stars if you like this your love..., 16 May 2010
This review is from: Fleet Foxes (Audio CD)
great album, soft, mellow, choral, the beach boys get mentioned alot, but theres alot of crosby, stills n' nash as well. Americana! Got to love it!
If like me you love this album but also love things a bit more 'edgy', extended psyk-out instrumentals, anger mixed into the beauty, etc, then check out the work of Akron/family.

5.0 out of 5 stars seminal, 15 May 2010
influential - unbelievably so.
The punk roots are always traced back, rarely this far. This is the point rough recordings and sheer engery first appear.
Really cool stuff.
For the money it's great value, containing pretty much everything they recorded, even if the out of sequence track order will grate on the purist.

5.0 out of 5 stars bargin of the centuary, 14 Feb. 2010
5 albums, all pure vini, all for a tenner - faultless.
packaging has recieved a bit of a slatting in these other reviews, don't listen!
Standard 'boxset' clam box, each album in it's own card envelope. The picture quality is excellent and all components are gloss finish. It's a nice thing!
All secondary to the music of course, which is a very nice thing!
