5.0 out of 5 stars A must read for anyone thinking of taking up this hobby, 11 Feb 2014

I have read a couple of books on microlights, and this is the best of the two. It is the story of someone who claims not to be a natural aviator who takes a share in a microlight aircraft. I had a private pilot's licence when I was younger, and this book brought back the thrill of flying, of course, but also the expense, the hanging around, the dependence on the weather, and frankly the danger, because these machines do not seem to be as reliable as the small aircraft I flew. So - must read for anyone thinking of taking up this hobby.
There is also quite a lot of information about aviation - and light aviation in particular - stories about air bases visited, etc.
For the writer, the pros clearly outweigh the cons.

5.0 out of 5 stars Very good novel based on an interesting historical event, 11 Feb 2014

Jojo Moyes' characters are always beautifully developed, and easy to relate to. This novel centres on four women on a six-week voyage that is momentous for all of them. It is a really excellent read.
I discovered Jojo Moyes entirely by accident, through Kindle (though I have subsequently seen her books in bookshops).

4.0 out of 5 stars Good historical mystery - characters perhaps a little thin, 11 Feb 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
The idea of a historical mystery is a good one, and you learn quite a lot about the historical event, as well as enjoying the mystery itself. Perhaps the four stars are a little mean, but it shares with a lot of detective fiction that the characters (other than the main character) are rather thinly drawn - maybe this is an almost inevitable feature of the genre.
I have read other books by the same author in the same series, and would make exactly the same comment about those books as well.

4.0 out of 5 stars As good as you expect from Jojo Moyes - though a weak ending?, 11 Feb 2014

This review is from: Peacock Emporium (Kindle Edition)
I have read quite a number of Jojo Moyes' books, and this shares with the others that it builds up a small number of characters very well, characters to whom it is easy to relate. The ending was (in my view) not as well developed as the rest of the book, nor as good as the endings in her other books.

Good story, set shortly after the second world war, and involving Polish soldiers still stationed here. One of her better novels.

Not a complicated book but interesting, written by someone who clearly loves the subject. A good introduction to the weather.

Quite a complicated and believable plot - with many sub-twists. One of her better novels, dealing with the awful consequences of betrayal.

An unusual murder mystery involving an ageing motorcycle gang. Quite a complicated plot with many red herrings. Characterisation is good and the book is well-written.

Not a bad adventure book, though the characters were rather weak, and the plot not wholly believable. A good book for a train journey.

5.0 out of 5 stars A fine understated series, 29 Jan 2013

Almost everything occurs in a few rooms - location is very low budget but the acting is really excellent and the plots centre on the politics. There is a little action stuff as well, but it is rather unconvincing - this is no James Bond series!
