3.0 out of 5 stars Good CGI and action let down by weak plot and forced humour., 18 Aug. 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
I watched this today followed by the Captain America sequel and where Caps movie shone this one is a bit average and probably one of the weaker films Marvel have released to date.

The film feels like a filler movie just so they could reposition the characters for later films rather than a genuine attempt at progressing Thor's story. The plot is weak (especially if you compare it to Captain America 2) and there are parts that don't fit well. They've tried to place some humour along the story line which just doesn't work and often feels like you're watching some mild Sunday afternoon rom-com with chirpy elevator music rather than a Marvel movie.

The CGI and action scenes are done well and Chris Hemsworth gives a good performance as Thor. Natalie Portman is forgettable and dull as are her colleagues (even when they are trying to be funny). Poor Stellan Skarsgård, who plays Eric Stelvig, is often reduced to the films buffoon character which just doesn't work.

I can't say its a terrible film but its not a good one. I think 3 stars is enough given the good CGI and action moments but I can't give it more as the forced humour and generally dull plot pulls it down. If you had to choose between this and Captain America 2 then buy Caps movie...its far better and more entertaining.

5.0 out of 5 stars 3rd best superhero movie in recent times just behind The Dark Knight and The Avengers., 18 Aug. 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
A wonderfully crafted film. I would rate this as the 3rd best super hero movie in recent years sitting just behind the Dark Knight and The Avengers and slightly better than the original Ironman. Captain America's morality is made very relevant in this film where in previous movies he was more of a boy scout.

The spy plot is interesting and the action is woven nicely between the narrative. It doesn't get dull which is handy given its a touch over 2 hours. A particular highlight is a scene with Jenny Agutter toward the end caught me by surprise but I really loved what they did.

The original Captain America was okay, Caps performance in The Avengers wasn't too bad but the other heroes outshone him, in this movie however he really comes good...was never really into Captain America but this movie has changed my mind. Well done Marvel on an excellent movie...more of this please!!!

5.0 out of 5 stars If you liked the original Grid then you will like this...Grid 2 its not!, 4 July 2014
This review is from: GRID: Autosport (PS3) (Video Game)
As a massive fan of the original Grid and having suffered the disappointment of Grid 2 I was a little wary of this game especially as some of the reviews here seem less than positive. The big question for me was is this as good as Grid?

The presentation of the game is much more low key than Grid, very simple menus are used that are clean and efficient. Grid was a bit more flashy but everything is laid out nicely and nothing is out of place.

Races are split across 6 events and the last event is unlocked depending upon progress in the first 5. 10 min practice sessions per race have been added (and a 3 lap qualifying if applicable) which is a nice addition and allows you to gain some familiarity before the serious stuff begins. You can also have driver aids that weren't in the original grid like the optimum racing line etc.

Racing is very responsive and the opponents are robust which makes the action frenetic. They will defend their driving lines from you and fellow racers. They can also make mistakes which definitely adds to the drama of racing. These guys don't do laps on rails. I personally like the AI very much, its been done extremely well and makes the AI in games like GT5/GT6 seem very outdated. There are 5 levels of difficulty which beats the originals 3.

Sadly, you don't seem to be able to have your own team like the original Grid so you're just racing for other teams gaining XP which subsequently unlocks more of the game. There is an online option which appears to be based upon buying cars as you progress in races but I've been having difficulty logging in so am unable to gauge how good that is.

What I really like is the variety of racing, getting a little bored of touring cars then switch to open wheel. Had enough open wheel then head off to some street racing etc. It is also a nice blend between arcade and sim, there is realism in the races but it has a high energy feel very much like the original.

I should also mention that the flashback system is done very well. Much better than the original and doesn't break the flow of the game or feel intrusive like the original did. You make a mistake, press the flashback and the onscreen action reverses instantly until you're ready for a 2nd attempt. Very smoothly done.

The graphics on PS3 aren't bad, they are better than the original game but obviously can't compete with its PC brother. There is a high sense of speed (especially on open wheel games) and very rarely does the frame rate stutter. Sound is okay, not the best I've heard but does the job.

Overall, this is what Grid 2 should have been and its pretty close to being as good as the orginal. Racing is solid and there is enough variety and challenge to keep you going for a long while. With dlc promising more cars and game modes then there should be even more to look forward to in the coming months.

EDIT: Have now managed to play a few online races and its great fun. Similar to single player except you also win cash to buy new cars with, gain sponsors and unlock upgrades. Thanks to the reasonably realistic damage model it pays to drive cleanly so you don't get the mad rammers that you often get in other racing games. Thats not to say that collisions don't happen, they do, but anyone who keeps banger racing or uses other cars to slow down won't get far. Very entertaining.

This review is from: The Last Of Us (PS3) (Video Game)
There are very few games I would call exceptional but this is one of them. Stunning graphics, intuitive controls and a beautifully told story. Everything about this is as good as it gets for the PS3...I would go as far as saying this is the greatest game ever created on the platform.

A remarkable achievement and a must own title.

3.0 out of 5 stars Lovely graphics and performance by Ellen Page but clumsy controls, 13 Feb. 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Very much wanted to like this and am a huge fan of The Walking Dead which is in a similar-ish style of minimalist control interactive movie but found the control system too clumsy/fiddly to get into and the story a little annoying with the constant flashbacks. A great shame really but I never felt connected to the game or the character.

On the plus side the graphics technology is very impressive and Ellen Page's performance is well done.

I think this game is definately an aquired taste but sadly not for me. I much preferred The Walking Dead/Heavy Rain to this and would suggest you look at them first if you're into the interactive movie type of game.

3.0 out of 5 stars Not bad but not super either, 3 Dec. 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
I quite enjoyed the first half of the film, some good back story and build up to the arrival of Zod. Some added menace was created with Zod's 2nd in command Faora, she has a very strong screen presence which is enjoyable to watch.

But...as the movie progressed it became more action heavy to the point I was looking at the clock wondering how much more I could be bothered to watch. There is definitely a disconnect in the latter half of the movie where you stop caring what happens.

I wasn't entirely convinced by Amy Adams as Lois Lane either, she lacks the screen presence that Margot Kidder brought to the role in the earlier Superman films...not sure if it was the writing or her acting but she didn't add to the film.

A bit more character development (more Kevin Costner scenes would have been welcome) and little less action could have elevated this film but as it stands its just an average super hero movie with some very good but overused CGI.

5.0 out of 5 stars Destined to be a classic, 26 Nov. 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
There are many shows that are brilliant throughout their air-time but fall short when it comes to the conclusion leaving unanswered questions or causing confusion by using some lame device to get from A to B.

This does not apply here...when it comes to Breaking Bad it is brilliant throughout its run and the ending is true to the show, it feels right and truthful. Each episode builds the tension to the climatic finish and becomes compelling viewing. I won't say more as I don't want to give anything away except that this show will become a classic in years to come.

As for the extras, there are commentaries for every episode, lots of mini features and an excellent alternative ending which is in stark contrast to the finale.

If you've never watched Breaking Bad then do yourself a favour and just buy it!

5.0 out of 5 stars Great shaver and no rash, 12 Sept. 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
There's all kinds of indicators and such on the shaver but the main reason I have this is because its one of the few shavers that don't cause a rash. I used to have the standard 3 disc shavers but they caused huge red patches on my throat but this shaver does none of that.

Additionally, you can have MUCH longer growth and it tackles this with ease unlike the 3 disc shavers.

The only negatives I can think of is its a little louder than a 3 disc shaver and, of course, the price is a touch high.

However, the biggest recommendation I can give this shaver is the fact that it is the 2nd one I'm purchasing and its for my father...as far as I'm concerned there's no higher praise.
