Read this book for a book group. As usual it had more interst than the film. The interesting parallel that I saw was between 'The Best Marigold Hotel' a retirement home for cash strapped Brits and the ultr modern block across the street that was a call centre staffed by educated Indians. This was two kind of 'outsourcing'. That of business and elderly people. Who knows might it come to that? The characters are all very very different temperament and background and yet despite the initial animosities , the financial problems of the hotel by the end the group are gelling. It raised a lot of issues about care in the UK, families and how the elderly are perceived in the west and the east

I was disapointed with this book after wtching the televsion version recently. It is a rare occurrence when a film version is better than the book. This all takes place in just over a week and Jean de Gue manages to impact the life of the English John. Whilst John changes things at the chateau - but probably not for the long term benefit of the inhabitants.

A real trip down memory lane. The Searchers were one of the great groups of the sixties with hit after hit. They had a very distnctive style but like so many of their time were in the shadow of The Beatles and The Rolling Stones. Much of their music has stood the test of time and sounds as good today as it did then.
