4.0 out of 5 stars Unknown land, 30 Dec. 2013

Rumania is a country little known to the majority of readers. This charmingly innocent story follows its hero into the vanished world of the Rumanian peasant and shows us the happier side of rural life before materialism drew the younger generation to the bright lights of the city.

5.0 out of 5 stars The other side of Leonardo, 30 Dec. 2013

After reading this book the real Leonardo came alive. The paintings are peripheral to his great search for answers to how the world functions scientifically. During this mighty endeavour we are taken into court and papal intrigues and finally to his close relationship with the King of France.

5.0 out of 5 stars A real classic, 30 Dec. 2013

Fantastic book ....great prose and a spell-binding subject. The characters emerge with all their human failings and foibles. The tale cannot quite hold its fascination after Gravelines when the Spanish fleet falls apart on its return to Spain but that's the fault of history....until then it's a rip roaring adventure.

5.0 out of 5 stars ingenious Charley, 16 Jun. 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
natty little toy which causes much amusement and fascination to our youngster - probably a hazard to babies still putting everything in their mouths but with parental care a great little toy. It has 2 different actions- one whizzing round on his bottom , the other with his legs in the air.

5.0 out of 5 stars Engineers' delight!, 14 Jan. 2013

Ingenious toy - our baby boy (just 1 yr.) enjoys working out the different mechanisms of the roller balls on the bottom almost as much as riding on it (which requires a deal of concentration for his age and small size, and abundant parental guidance!).
This will ease as his legs get stronger and more co-ordinated - it's a terrific machine - he also uses it to practise walking by holding onto the handle and pushing it backwards! It arrived in good time and well packaged.

We all love it - and it arrived before expected.

This review is from: Treason of the Heart (Hardcover)
This looked like a really interesting project - but having laboured through chapter after chapter of lists of people who were "traitors of the beart" I wondered 1) if it was an expanded thesis 2) if a bit of judicious cutting might have improved it 3) if he wouldn't have done better to take fewer cases and developed each one more thoroughly. Some of the characters showed potential and likewise books about them cited in the text. It was a non fiction book club choice - but reading it turned out to be a bit of a labour.

2.0 out of 5 stars Misadventures on the high teas, 3 Aug. 2010

A rather brittle version of a Bill Bryson travel tale - interesting detail now and then, but an awareness of his own cleverness makes for tiresome reading and the chip on his shoulder is more in evidence than his sense of humour.
I had difficulty in getting to the end.

3.0 out of 5 stars Nile, 7 Feb. 2009

Interesting pages on London intellectual life of the period, but even better on the Nile - particularly if that's why you bought the book. It catches the flavour.
