5.0 out of 5 stars a genuine classic, 6 Jun 2012

This is a genuine movie classic, with Lana Turner starring as the mother who suffers for her sins! The story is typical trash-melodrama, as Turner loves and then foresakes her husband & son, believing that she has & will only cause them grief.

Turner is terrific as Hollie/ Madam X, and truly delivers a stella performance (especially in the final courtroom scenes) while Keir Dullea is movingly touching as the son who doesn't know his mother but is willing to shed tears over the honour of the mysterious Madam X. John Forsythe plays an early Blake Carrington (or is Blake Carrington playing John Forsythe I wonder?) while Ricardo Montalban is equally charming/ creepy as the playboy who seduces Hollie (Turner) and starts her downward spirial.

Its interesting to note that nearly all the major players lived on to better themselves two decades later, in 80's primetime soaps - Forsythe in Dynasty; Turner & Dullea in Falcon Crest, and Montalban in The Colby's - which must surely show how these actors loved playing 'misery'!

Top notch film, up there with Mildred Pierce and Stella Dallas - do not miss!

Fab iron - looks heavy but weighs nothing, nice long lead, steam-booster button and stray, lots of settings (although I iron everything was cotton, so never understand what the rest of the options are for), overall top drawer. Cannot go wrong.

2.0 out of 5 stars Not Good, 5 May 2012

Not good at all, sooooo disappointing. The first handful of tracks are noisey rubbish; the William Orbit tune was clearly a recyled leftover from 'Ray of Light' and the only, seriously ONLY, decent song is 'Masterpiece'. Absolutely dire Madge, really. Have already sold my copy on Marketplace and will be more cautious with Madonna purchases in future......definately listen before you buy.

3.0 out of 5 stars For Fans Only, 5 May 2012
The TV ratings slide towards ultimate cancellation was sped up by this dire season which kicks off with the resolution of the return of Matthew Blaisdal (all neatly sorted out by episode 2!). Jeff & Fallon return from 'The Colbys' although they probably wished they hadn't as the storylines get worse and more desperate....purleese, Alexis for Governor!!!! Never! However, Fallon's return does allow for repeat flashbacks to her UFO 'incident' (the spaceship 'smelt of cinnamon', stated Fallon. 'Aha', says Jeff, 'were they baking?').

New man on the block 'Sean' (a clone of Dex if there ever was one) adds nothing to the story, Dominique vanishes without mention and the Adam/ Michael storyline coupled with the awful surrogate baby drama, all leave me in no wonder why US 80's TV viewers switched off in their millions.

I read somewhere that the show wanted to return to basic's after several seaons of fantasy and the loss of The Colbys. Its a shame really that the writers didn't have the foresight to get rid of some of the Dynasty deadwood (i.e. Lesley, Dex, Dana, Adam) and transplant in some of the the more heavywright cast from the 'The Colbys'.....seriously, wouldn't it have been fun to see Blake and Jason go head-to-head, or have Francesca dally with Dex, or even filthy foreigner Zachary Powers try to seduce Sammy Jo. Ahh, what could have been.

Season 8 is for diehard Dynasty lovers only, so I'm giving three (generous) stars.

4.0 out of 5 stars know-it-all, 7 Mar 2012
Dr Megan Hunt...former top surgeon, now epic Medical Examiner, and general know-it-all-about-everything, except how to be a wife, mother and friend, but she's learning on the job! Yes, I think that about summerises 'Body of Proof', a US star vehicle for Dana Delany (of recent 'Desperate Housewives' fame) with a supporting cast of who, who, who (only Jeri Ryan, of Voyager, stands out as a semi-recognisable face). However there are pop up 'special guest stars' which add interest.

Basically, the story is police procedural and episodic, with only family strands (i.e. Megan's inability to connect with her daughter) that spread across the series. Dana Delany does well to carry the show, but the writer's insistence on making her a general know-it-all is grating. If the show reaches a second season it would be nice to have a slightly humbler Dr Hunt, who learns and grows from others, rather than being the only one who seems to know what on earth is going on in the ME's office. Also I do question whether a woman who spends so much time on her feet at the surgical table would ever be able to maintain the standard of high-heel that she sports through every episode

On the whole a sterling effort, B+ for a first season, but there's work to do if 'Body of Proof' is going to become the level of hit series than Delany has enjoyed before.

5.0 out of 5 stars Classic Sunday night viewing, 4 Mar 2012

Murder, She Wrote is a classic show - never mind the constant stream of Hollywood 'guest' stars, or the wonderfully 'twee' theme tune, or even the great writing....its Angela Lansbury as Jessica Fletcher that makes the show so infinately watchable.

This season saw Lansbury win the Best Actress award at the Golden Globes, and its no small wonder why. Season 3 starts off with the great double-episode 'Death Stalks the Big Top', but also includes several other memorable installments, with my personal favourites being 'Dead Man's Gold' (where Jessica is blinded to the murderer, who is an old flame), 'Crossed Up' (an semi-take on the movie Read Window, where a bedridden Jessica overhears a possible murder which puts her own life in danger) and finally the terrific crossover episode with Magnum PI, which see's Jessica and Magnum (Tom Sellect) work together to out the murderer at a swish Hawaii resort. All truly fantastic stuff.

There's never gore, blood and guts, or swearing or unnessecary violence, instead its simply storytelling at its best - a classic show, sadly missed, but great to revisit on DVD.

5.0 out of 5 stars Ultimate Fantasy, 26 Feb 2012

J L langley writes novels that present the ultimate gay fantasy - the characters are all handsome, honed, toned and hung; are successful, loving, giving and protective, and always (but always!) manage to find their 'mate' and overcome some awful trauma, terror or general unpleasantness.....'With Abandon' (the third book in the 'wolf' series) doesn't disappointment on any count.

As always, the characters are likeable and her writing style whips along at such a pace that you're never bored, with storylines quickly development and quickly progressed. Okay, I must admit the storytelling is simplist, as is the writing, but its fun and engaging. The sex scenes are hot, but never gratuitous, and she does well to maintain tension as the story builds (like all her other books) to its climatic conclusion.

Langley doesn't take herself or her characters too seriously, which is what makes these books so hugely enjoyable - seriously, where else will you find gay characters living in a former Southern plantation, who are secretly werewolves, and only have one true mate and love always shines though? Exactly!

'With Abandon' is great escapist reading, without the usual 'coming out' angst of traditional gay-orientated literature. I just sincerely hope that we don't have to wait another 4 years for her next 'with/without' novel...

5.0 out of 5 stars 80's trash...and I loved it!, 17 Feb 2012
This review is from: The Movie Set (Paperback)
OK, I'll admit now that this isn't the finest example of literature you'll find and yes, Jackie Collins does it much better in 'Hollywood Wives' but this is classic, trashy 80's fiction!

The story is that of five girls, who become women, while struggling to make it in 'The Movie Set'. The women are all wonderfully named - Buffy, Cleo, Suellen... - and are stereotypes of certain 'types' (i.e. Cleo is a 'doormat' to her husband, his work and their kids; Cassie is a 'victim', you get the picture) and the story follows their lives from High School, to marriage, to success, with assorted trauma's, upsets, misery, death, struggles and other harrowing events thrown in for good measure.

My only slight quibble is that the story is mostly told from the viewpoint of central character 'Buffy Ann' who is, unfortunately, the most irritatingly frustrating character of them all - a saint, sinner, friend and foe to everyone (and the most incapable of dealing with her own life, yet freely giving advice to one-and-all on theirs!).

Considering the book was first published in 1984, and spans a timeline from the 60's to early 80's, the actual content & theme's are still reasonably fresh and current, or 'au courant' (as main-dame Susannah would say!).

I hugely enjoyed because, well, they don't write 'em like this anymore, and considering the novel is of the generation of 'bonk busters', there really is very little sex or bad language; instead its a tale of morality and how individuals interpretations of this can change over a lifetime and how you recover and go on - which is all probably too deep for a book about how to 'survive in the movie set'...!

Go on, read know you want to!

5.0 out of 5 stars Perfect for training, 17 Feb 2012
Recently purchased this watch after returning the terrible Soleus GPS 1.0 Runners Speed and Distance Watch, see review!

This watch is very easy to set up and use, literally.
Turn the watch on by pressing and holding the light button (same to turn off) then press page/menu to locate GPS, once done simply press start and off you go, I have mine set to tell me the distance run, timer and minute mile info. as soon as you finish press stop and that is all you need to do, connect to PC and download the data which takes a second (once you have registered for the first time) and you can see all the data needed, brilliant watch and I cant recommend this enough!
Apprantly wearing this under clothing can affect the data so I wear mine on the outside of my sleeve and it has produced accurate reports every time.

I am training for the London marathon and this is fantastic for keeping logs of my runs, the data is fantastic listing the distance run, time, incline, minute mile, average minute mile, lap times and most importantly calories burnet so you know how many to replace them.....

My main point for anyone like me who doesn't know anything about GPS watches is, buy this with confidence, you won't regret it!

A great, but simply story; a small but truly talented cast, and a beautiful location...what more could you want from a movie?

I don't need to go in to the story, so well covered by other reviewers, but the simple tale of an old couple visiting their summer retreat, and trying to come to terms with aging, death, and mistakes made is wonderful stuff.

There are no 'big set' pieces, or anyone trying to overshadow anyone else. There is no CGI (which ruins so many movies nowadays), little bad language, but just a nice tale told so solidly through wonderful acting.

I cannot believe that I've waited 35 years to watch this movie - don't make the same mistake, buy it now and keep it on the shelf as I guarantee that you'll want to watch it again.
