Stoner: A Novel (Vintage Classics)
Stoner: A Novel (Vintage Classics)
Price: £4.52

5.0 out of 5 stars A classic, 12 Aug. 2013

On the face of it it is a very simple tale with no extreme dramatic moments. However, it succeeds in holding one's attention throughout. Stoner's translation from a very humble rural background to that of an academic is a rather hard to accept and he is a somewhat down beat character. He breaks the mould both in his love affair and in how he finesses the Head of Department. The writing is lucid and and unaffected.

4.0 out of 5 stars The sadness of the First World War, 26 July 2013

It is a very detailed description of the First World War- a historian's description. Great detail about battalions, corps, etc. -too much for the ordinary reader. It is made alive by the numerous quotations from the diaries and writings of the men who were there.. Probably best to skim some parts and still understand the tragedy of the War.

Dramatic, amoral and fascinating. The bizarre tale of two people who were lucky together and unlucky apart drove the story. But, at the end of the day, did they really care what happened to them?

A classic. Marlene Dietrich far and away the sexiest women ever seen on screen before she was air brushed by Hollywood. A tragic tale of the degradation of a schoolmaster.

3.0 out of 5 stars The Lewis Trilogy, 6 Feb. 2013

Disappointing after first book. Characters began to take up extreme positions. Conversations became unreal. The thuggish gamekeeper changed from being highly aggressive to offering a cup of tea. There were similar shifts in character with other people in he plot. And the idea that a professional assassin would not be seen on an island was hard to believe.

Quirky but always interesting. Susie Boyt has a turn of language which makes a point and makes me laugh. I will recommend it to my grand daughter who has the sense to be a Judy Garland fan.

This was a delightful book. Easy to criticise in terms of plausibility but all that was required was "a willing suspension of disbelief" to enjoy the unfolding of the story. I thought the ending was almost inevitably going to be banal but in fact it continued to intrigue me.
