...from the pen of Susanna Gregory. Chaloner is investigating another tortuous tale with plenty of twists and turns. Reading them in order is also helping to note the various developments in both his character and historically.

...with more twists and turns than I could keep up with at times. The author's style isn't always clear but I got there in the end. I'd recommend this and will now start the next one!

5.0 out of 5 stars Sansom's Shardlake shocks! (later on), 17 Nov 2014

Well... another wonderful tale to add to the series of Shardlake books! I felt that there wasn't quite the rich detail of London life as in previous books but it was still excellent. The story line was complex at times and there was definitely a shock happening towards the end!! I'm still wondering how it will all play out in subsequent books in terms of Master Shardlake and his various more minor characters... roll on the next book!!

Another Jefferson Tayte book...one that I was eager to read as it seems so long since the previous one...and it didn't disappoint! Steve Robinson's previous books were a delight and his central character, JT, was equally so. The plot of 'The Lost Empress' is created from two timelines...100 years apart...and the author twists them together with aplomb whilst keeping this reader engaged throughout. I love the way that he is able to use an actual event as the springboard for the storyline...and it's one that I knew nothing about prior to reading this book... to create a scenario of such complexity and intrigue.
Whilst the book can be read as a 'standalone' novel I do urge anyone new to this series to read the previous books as they'll have a more rounded sense of Jefferson Tayte's character.... he's even more loveable than he appears in this latest book.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book...the twists and turns of the plot and the largely believable characters were later supported by historical facts at the end of the book.

5.0 out of 5 stars A very moving account of one man's war..., 23 Sep 2014

My father was on Stirlings during the war and he was fond of them. Although John 'Sherlock' Holmes was in a different squadron there was lots of detail in this to give me a further idea of what conditions were like and the author brings the men to life wonderfully on the page. I thoroughly enjoyed reading this...despite various feelings of frustration, horror, triumph and sorrow as the story unfolded. Recommended reading for anyone interested in any aspect of Bomber Command, RAF etc.

The fact that our central character, Morton, is a forensic genealogist just adds a further layer of interest to this thriller/mystery. This is the author's second novel and I'm looking forward to more in the series.

Sleep of Death (Nick Revill Book 1)
Sleep of Death (Nick Revill Book 1)
Price: £5.22

4.0 out of 5 stars A dalliance with death, 11 Sep 2014

Nick Revill's engagement with The Chamberlain's Men has him balancing his enquiries alongside his theatre work. Again the pace is easy and the life of Elizabethan London is well evoked.
