3.0 out of 5 stars The 1985 Archiv version is far better..., 27 Nov. 2015
Although Sir Gardiner lift among the listeners some good and bad feelings I enjoy many of his recordings.

Listening to this one of the SDG label we have a feeling that it's performed by a young group of singers with a softness on the hole sound.

The version recorded with the old Monteverdi Choir back on 1985 if far more dramatic and powerfull.

I strongly recommend you to choose the Archiv.

That's my advice.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent, even if you already have a reference recording, 13 Aug. 2015
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This a great Mahler reading.

You get:
- a clear, spacious and powerfull DG 4D recording sound
- The Viena Phillarmonic playing, the orchestra Mahler conducts at the time of this composition
- A detail reading of the score by Boulez
- the involving melodies of the 6th symphony.

Although some tend to critisize and call the slow readings as 'cold' and put away this CD, it's an excelent chance to hear to many details of the score withou loosing emotion and the power of this composition.

If you already have a reference recording of it, as critics tend to choose and publicise, don't loose the chance to hear it with open heart.

I think you'll find satisfaction listen to it.

Then, you can go back and listen to you reference recording again.

Recommended if you enjoy Mahler symphonies.

4.0 out of 5 stars Nice perfomances, but there are other readings avaiable..., 7 Mar. 2015
This CD presents nice performances of Vivaldi well known Cello concertos.

The playing is warm and we get a nice feeling of the melodies.

For a more straight approach on period instruments you can try Anner Bylsma on the Cello with Tafelmusik / Jeanne Lamon on SONY, with nearly the same repertoire.

I found the link of the CD (today) only at Amazon.fr and .de but eventually it's avaiable bugget priced on .co.uk or on .com.

On Amazon.de (with samples)

The orchestra has bit thin sound but the playing is virtuosistic.

Try out,

5.0 out of 5 stars Great little light music!, 7 Feb. 2015
Although when we think about chamber concertos Vivaldi's name come to mind, we must consider Manfredini's talent and musical gifts, listening to this CD.

You get 42 inventive tracks of the 12 concertos, very well played captured in a cristal recording.

If you are a baroque admirer and fond of this music stile, this is a pack you can't miss.

5.0 out of 5 stars Desert Island Disc... 01 of 03..., 31 Mar. 2014
The mith of 'The Desert Island Disc' (CD or LP) is hard to answer and maybe it doesn't exist alone.

Particulary if I have to decide now I'll pick this as first choice, Gardiner Haendel Messiah and a Bach concert CD.

Many will desagree and will choose others and it's really extremelly difficult to make a choice.

That said, this CD is shurelly wisely produced.

It intorpolates 'The 09 tunes for Archbishop Parker' by Thallis, with 9 'Cantione Sacrae' of Byrd, creating an incredible atmosfere and coherent shift with one another.

The nine tunes are from the Psalms nº 1, 68, 2, 95, 42, 5, 52, 67 with the Ordinal 'Veni Creator'.

They last but a minute but are a pure reflective joy.

Among them, and the first track, we get the 'Third Tune' on Psalm 2 ("Why fum'th in sight...") that have on it's 5 last bars the theme rapted by Vaugham Williams to compose his 'Fantasia on a Theme of Thomas Thallis' that either apear on the scene of the tempest on the 'Master and Commander' movie with Russel Krowe. Stunning!
On the web you can freelly find the scores of this tunes, so nice and so simple.

The Byrd's Cantione are either impressive moving and the whole CD is very desirable.

If you enjoy poliphonic and reflexive music, this is for you.

The performers.... well.... 13 strong among the best.

Shurelly one of the Desert Island Discs.

Highly recommended,

5.0 out of 5 stars Fabulous music Experience!, 28 Mar. 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Monteverdi has a high skill on music and this recording is shurely a reference of this work.

There are a full hand of other recordings but, particulary they don't get the right approach.

Some are very interesting but uses one-part-per voice like Parrot and McCreesh.

The first Gardiner on Decca and the Suzuki uses larger forces but are a bit slow on pace making it a bit heavy.

This one receives a dance-like and strong-attack moments that makes it unbeatable.

The McCreesh (on a Archiv too) have a nice lead but the one-voice-per choral parts are covered by the strong sounds of the brasses and sacbuts and the use of a bit larger choir as in Gardiner gives an excelent balance to the sound.

Some maybe bother by the voice of the soloists but they're very good. Among them you have Alaistair Miles, Nigel Robson and the now popular Brin Terfel in the begining.

This recording has either a substancial difference from the others because it was recorded on the exact place where Monteverdi certanly have performed them, after 08/1613, when he was accepted: the Basilica of St. Marc on Venice and the acustics is simply fabulous.

I either recommend you watch the video of this recording that's simply amazing and has a historic documentary of Monteverdi and the work.

A highly spiritual experience.

Schumann: Complete Symphonies; Das Paradies und die Peri [+digital booklet]
Price: £22.99

5.0 out of 5 stars Vibrant and really complete, 23 Mar. 2014
This Schumann/Gardiner box is really inspiring and you shure get the complete symphonies (including the non Op. number 'Zwickau' and the Mahler arrangment of the 4th.).

Plus you get the Konzerstuck for four hornes and 3 choral pieces:

1. The Requiem für Mignon aus Goethes "Wilhelm Meister", Op.98b for Soloists, Chorus and Orchestra,

2. The Nachtlied "Quellende, schwellende Nacht", Op.108 for Chorus and Orchestra and

3. Tthe Persian theme oratorio 'Paradies und die Peri (Paradise and Peri) that is not commonly know.

On these three you can hear the always sharp Monteverdi Choir, the soloits Christoph Prégardien, Barbara Bonney and others.

The Orchestre Revolutionaire and Romantic plays very fine and you get a really vibrant reading of the symphonies and their german dance-like motifs.

If you're fond of Schumann and dont have reserves on Gardiner, this box has a comprehensive amount of works of this gifted composer.

The concertos could be included to complete the orchestral pack.

Recomended.
