Very pleased. Arrived promptly and in perfect condition. Didn't realise that these were genuine Philips bulbs when I purchased them so was a pleasant surprise when I opened the envelope.

5.0 out of 5 stars Extremely easy to use iron that gives professional results, 31 July 2014
Customer review from the Amazon Vine Programme (What's this?)
This is my third steam generator iron so I feel well qualified to review this product. My ex-wife dropped the first iron and kept the second iron as part of her alimony settlement so I was very pleased to receive this iron.

The major advance is this irons simplicity of use. All you have to do is turn it on, leave it to warm up and it automatically switches into a normal setting that is suitable for the vast majority of ironing. Previous irons have had complex controls on both the iron itself and the base unit that were very confusing.

The water tank is easy to remove and has an excellent capacity. The cable storage works well as done the steam lead, although I am a little concerned that the covering may become frayed with time as this happened to my last steam iron. The grip which holds the iron to base makes it easy to transport the iron as a whole unit.

Most importantly, the results are superb. You do need a high quality ironing board to go with it as it needs to be strong enough to hold the steam generator and must provide a mesh to allow the steam to pass through easily.

Lecture Notes: Paediatrics
Lecture Notes: Paediatrics
by Simon J. Newell
Edition: Paperback
Price: £22.99

5.0 out of 5 stars A classic textbook for students of Paediatrics of all ages, 31 July 2014
Customer review from the Amazon Vine Programme (What's this?)
This book is the latest edition of a book that has an excellent pedigree. It was the main recommended textbook for Paediatrics when I was at Medical School in Leeds over 30 years ago. Its current authors follow in the footsteps of their illustrious predecessors, who were both Professors of Paediatrics at Leeds.

The books layout is exceptionally clear. It starts with a very helpful introductory section that explains the symbols that are used for the main features such as a key for key points or a purple box which gives pointers to passing Objective Structured Clinical Exams (OSCEs). The tops of the pages in the chapter on Emergency Paediatrics are usefully highlighted in Red so they can easily be found, although this book is more suited to a briefcase than a jacket pocket.

Above all, this is a well written book that is a pleasure to read that informs and entertains students of all ages.

My only minor quibble is the use of a legal style numbering scheme for paragraphs, sub-paragraphs and sub-sub-paragraphs. Thus, History of the Presenting Condition becomes 2.1.3.2. This became the norm for Trust documents in the NHS 15 years ago but has now thankfully disappeared back into oblivion as it adds obfuscation without actually assisting the reader in navigating the text.

1.0 out of 5 stars Thin and not a good foot moisturiser!, 26 May 2014
Customer review from the Amazon Vine Programme (What's this?)
This product has a slight green tinge and is not thick although it smells pleasant. Whilst it absorbed rapidly, unfortunately the main ingredient of aqua (water!) seemed to be the only ingredient and ensured that the product did not moisturise and the dry skin on my feet (and hands) remained dry and not supple or soft. This product lets down the Scholl name and would be more appropriate as a body moisturiser.

PanzerGlass Screen Protector for Apple iPhone 5/5S/5C
PanzerGlass Screen Protector for Apple iPhone 5/5S/5C
Price: £12.57

4.0 out of 5 stars Guaranteed to protect your iPhone's screen, 26 May 2014
Customer review from the Amazon Vine Programme (What's this?)
Well packaged, this iPhone protective cover comes with complete instructions (or should that read ‘instructins’ as written on the internal packaging?) I must admit defeat when it came to using the ‘vacuum membrane’ as it was not listed in the contents and seemed surplus to needs. What is it??

However, the screen itself was easy to use and fitted quickly and perfectly onto my iPhone with no bubbles.

Only one slight drawback to using this product and that is when it comes to using the phone’s home button, the home button seems to have sunk rather low and to use it requires a little extra effort.

Otherwise a fantastic product and one which is guaranteed (by the product’s own claims) to be shatter proof and scratch-resistant.

This is a very long comprehensive book that covers every aspect of strategy and will appeal to many readers who are interested in not only the historical aspect but also the biblical and political aspect of this subject. It is a very detailed definition of the theme .

Lawrence Freedman’s book traces the strategic events that have shaped the world in which we now live. The strategic timeline in the book places historical events in context . His very detailed explanation of these events enable the reader to fully understand how strategic policies have helped to shape the outcome of many conflicts and the future of many countries. He highlights this in great detail giving the background and then the outcome .

The book also enables the reader to think about how they use personal strategies at work and in home life. A compelling and thought provoking read that will appeal to many.

Sweet Dreams, Little One
Sweet Dreams, Little One
by Massimo Gramellini
Edition: Paperback
Price: £11.99

5.0 out of 5 stars Witty and well written tale, a worthwhile read, 23 April 2014
Customer review from the Amazon Vine Programme (What's this?)
Throughout the novel, the author seeks to make sense out of the premature death of his mother. The narrator of the tale has the same name as the author and as both are writers and the novel is written so graphically, could it be that both author and hero are simultaneously one and the same?

Massimo is a nine year old boy, with a fertile imagination. He wakes up on New Year's Eve to discover that his mother has died. Massimo needs to be loved and philosophises on love, the women in his life and family members. He has a constant hunger to be held physically which he finds hard to find.

With his amusing anecdotes, this novel is simultaneously comical and sad. It is a nod to Nick Hornby's literary output and if you have enjoyed novels of this genre, then here is another that you will indisputably enjoy.

Massimo, in his quest to seek happiness, rejects religion, people and intimacy. He builds his solitude as a defence mechanism to avoid getting hurt by further loss. His introspection and fear are the building blocks of the novel. He feels that happiness is like a balloon - it is transient and will pop.

There is resolution at the end of the novel when Massimo becomes reconciled to his godmother and heeds the advice of his second wife - he realises the void left by his mother can be filled and this does enable him to move on.

Swimming Studies
Swimming Studies
by Leanne Shapton
Edition: Hardcover
Price: £20.00

4.0 out of 5 stars There is something compelling about the subject matter, 16 Mar. 2014
This review is from: Swimming Studies (Hardcover)
Customer review from the Amazon Vine Programme (What's this?)
Leanne Shapton details her formative years as a would-be Olympic swimming hopeful in Canada. She writes poetically with short, rhythmic sentences. Whilst submerged in the water, Leanne Shapton is ‘deprived of taste, scent, sound, and most sight’, ironically in her book we are exposed to all senses though minutiae of day-to-day living. We bob up and down on a sea of description – one moment she is competing in Canada and the next minute, she is swimming in open water in London. All this is juxtaposed with modern art illustrations which includes viewing swimming as the shapes of pools she visits. Her mental health deteriorates after Leanne ceases competitive swimming and it is only when she returns to the waters that her health simultaneously improves. Is there life after the rigours and discipline of swimming? Leanne explores her art and thoughts as she continues to submerge in the swimming pools and open waters around the world. The noise of competitive swimming continually gets drowned out by the silence of art and introspection and by being underwater.

The author gives us a unique insight into the world of competitive swimming – as seen through the eyes of this Canadian Olympic hopeful - the hours she trained up and down, the food, rivalries, timings and tapering to get there. It is interesting and beautifully portrayed. The author becomes more introspective as her life becomes more devoted to art after she leaves the intensity of the swimming arena.

Swimming and art are viewed as disciplines – Leanne experiences a mental breakdown after giving up serious swimming and the juxtaposition of art and swimming details on the pages mirrors this – there is a cacophony of competitions, training and pictures. Can you ever truly give up swimming? Can you move on and find a new focus? The author struggles which suggests perhaps not.

5.0 out of 5 stars An essential read for all interview candidates, 16 Mar. 2014
Customer review from the Amazon Vine Programme (What's this?)
I have been an NHS Consultant for 15 years and have interviewed many people for various positions in medicine and nursing over that time. It is far easier sitting on that side of the table – all you have to do is just ask your one or two questions and compare each candidate’s responses! A change of personal circumstances meant that I needed to find a new job in a different city so I thought it would be useful to brush up on interview techniques.

This book proved to be an ideal companion. It starts with the very sensible advice that all interviewers, no matter which post they are trying to fill, are looking for the 4 C’s: Competence, Confidence, Commitment and Chemistry. The first chapter then explores further the “interview game”, showing how you demonstrate that you have the key skills required of the job such as teamworking. This is then explored in further detail later in the book. The idea is that having read the first chapter, you then skip directly to whichever chapter is most relevant to your job interview.

Above all, it helps get you in the mindset of being in an interview situation – I found it very helpful to read through the points again on the day of the interview so that I could avoided the Ten Cardinal Sins of Interviewing and project a confident self image.

With all this helpful advice did I get the first job I applied for? Yes!

Would I recommend it to anyone attending a job interview? Definitely.

5.0 out of 5 stars Radio 4 Comedy at its best, 28 Feb. 2014
Customer review from the Amazon Vine Programme (What's this?)
Radio 4 comedy is a mixed bag - some is instantly forgettable whilst others become true classics that stand the test of time and reward further listening.

Bleak Expectations is a brilliant parody of all thing Dickensian yet told from a very modern perspective. The script is excellent, the acting is superb and the whole thing romps along as any ripping yarn should do.

A modern classic.
