Wonderful story. Told beautifully from The Girl Of Steel's point of view, the story is basic and interweaves her into the DC Universe where it turns out everybody is out to get her, including Lex Luthor and his cunning plan. Funny, moving, and great use of tying her into Superman, Batman, and Wonder Woman's history.
The usual fantastic quality from writer Jeph Loeb.

5.0 out of 5 stars Good for a re-boot., 2 Dec 2009
This review is from: Star Trek [DVD] (DVD)
The whole idea in JJ Abrams making this was to re-energise Star Trek. It is true that the story and the character involvement within it is not as deep as the franchise has been in the past, but then again too much of that is what forced Star Trek to take a rest. The plot was engaging and some new dimensions were added to what (unfortunately) have been viewed as cliched characters over the last 40 years. That was the most refreshing part of this movie: to see new ideas added and to challenge people's expectations.

As a fan of the original Star Trek, I entered this movie with an open mind and I was not naive enough to think it would be completely faithful to the classic series. As an introduction to the younger characters, it was exciting to see each of them appear and meet for the first time.

The first half of the movie though was oddly paced and jumped around too much for us to concentrate at times. Despite of this, the opening sequence was hugely emotional and almost a tear jerker. I was surprised by how powerful it was. You'll know what I mean if you've seen it.

The second half made up for any weaker pieces in the first half so I can't complain. Having seen every Star Trek movie, this is definetly one of the best. See this film instead of junk like Transformers 2 and GI Joe. This film has real soul for a 'summer blockbuster'.

Verdict
5/5

5.0 out of 5 stars I actually have it!, 18 Nov 2009

The box set is different to the Limited Edition one in that it has the individual cases facing outwards (like Trial of a Timelord). The box is sturdy and good quality compared to some other 2entertain Who sets. The DVDs themselves are exactly the same as the previous ones released two years ago, containing all special features.

For the price, its worth it for 26 episodes!

Very pleased with it.

4.0 out of 5 stars Back to Gallifrey..., 16 Nov 2009
I am actually a huge fan of this story. Some of the atmosphere created in The Deadly Assassin is still here, mainly because of the use of the Panopticon set. It is definetly a better use of the Time Lords than anything that came later (yes, I'm looking at you Arc Of Infinity!).

It is fair to say that the story feels a bit padded and patched up in some places. The Sontarans are brought in mainly to extend the story to 6 episodes but at the end of the day: Its hugely entertaining! Some 'fans' should just quit moaning. True, some of the production values are a bit laughable (hospitals and swimming pools anyone?) but the story itself is quite compelling. You'll be guessing why The Doctor is behaving strangely in the early episodes. Its all a cunning plan *wink wink*.

Just enjoy Tom Baker's brilliant performance and the talents of lovely Louise Jameson in her final story. My final advice is to watch it with the new CGI effects which really improve it.

By the way! Look out for a Sontaran falling over a deck chair when they chase Andred through the swimming pool. Priceless!

4/5

5.0 out of 5 stars Just see it!, 5 Nov 2009

There are many lengthy reviews here so I won't bother to write an essay.

In my opinion, this is the best Doctor Who story of all time. This and 'The Talons of Weng-Chiang' really show what the show could really do and what ultimate story telling is all about. Robert Holmes is an amazing writer.

Gallifrey looks dark, brooding and mysterious as do the Time-Lords within it. Very gothic and atmospheric is the best to describe it. This was the first time The Doctor had a major story without a companion and it is an experiment that works. Tom Baker is the best Doctor because he can command a story by himself: Brilliant. The Doctor also gets abused quite a bit showing he is not a superman. This aspect is lacking in the New Series.

If you like the New Series: PLEASE watch this! It doesn't look cheap and the acting is top notch all round. The stories from this era are more adult than the New Series will ever be.

Verdict
5/5 (don't even have to think about it)

Doctor Who - Destiny of the Daleks [DVD] [1979]
Dvd ~ Tom Baker
Price: £5.60

3.0 out of 5 stars Average, 5 Nov 2009
As a follow up to 'Genesis of the Daleks' it just doesn't cut it. The story isn't as strong as the latter and the Dalek activity is very lacklustre within it. Davros doesn't appear until half way through and when he does, he doesn't have much to say or contribute to the story. The Movellans look goofy and very 1970s which is not a good thing by any means.

Overall, I don't think this was a very good debut for Lalla Ward who wasen't very well written in this whole season anyway. She deserved better.

Verdict
3/5

It was pretty good and had quite an interesting story. You could see Peter Davison just starting to develop into the role which is cool to watch. All of the companions had something to do even though there were three of them. The special effects are good for their time and are completely believable too.

Also, the actress playing 'Enlightenment' is extremely beautiful. I wish she was in it more than she was.

1.0 out of 5 stars worst Dr Who I have ever seen., 27 Oct 2009
The story, like most of this era is practically non-existent. I just couldn't get into it. It didn't make any sense. Even 3 episodes was too many.

It's as bad as Paradise Towers, Nightmare of Eden and Horns of Nimon.

I don't wish to be so negative about McCoy as the Doctor, but Curse of Fenric and Survival are much better! Buy those.

Nuff said. The characters, the story, the situations, and the world of Watchmen is absolutely fascinating. It changed the way people view comic book characters as well as morality, humanity and politics in our real world. This flawless story is full of flawed individuals creating a realistic and complex view of human beings and human nature. Alan Moore is a genius.

5.0 out of 5 stars Greatest Film of 2009, 25 Sep 2009
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: Watchmen (1-Disc) [DVD] (DVD)
Recently I have been thinking "god, they don't make classic films anymore". Of course there are exceptions such as 'The Dark Knight' but there are too many brainless blockbusters nowadays to think straight. This is the greatest film I have seen in years. It was like watching 'The Godfather' for the first time: it just had everything! A complete masterwork. The plot seems simple yet isn't. You really have to just the watch the Watchmen (sorry, I couldn't resist haha) to appreciate it.

All the negative reviews are down to this:

A) they didn't understand it
or
B) they didn't read the Graphic Novel
or
C) they prefer the Graphic Novel
or
D) they were expecting your run of the mill crappy Action film

Please give the film a chance. It is very close to the novel but obviously a more cinematic and exciting experience than the novel (but still a good adaption). Amazing, amazing film.
