5.0 out of 5 stars This is a great piece of non fiction reportage by Nobel laureate Marquez, 5 Feb. 2015

This is a great piece of non fiction reportage by Nobel laureate Marquez. The author, famous for "One Hundred Years of Solitude" and other great novels, describes a number of kidnappings by the Medelin drugs cartel, and in particular the effect that confinement has on the victims. The Colombian writer started his career as a journalist and felt the problems of his country deeply. He was described by one Colombian president as "the greatest Colombian who ever lived". In a world where kidnapping for ransom or political reasons is widespread, this is a "must read" book for anyone wishing to understand the issues. ¡Escritura increíble!

This book covers all the painters considered part of the "Fauves" group of painters (literally "wild beasts!") of whom Matisse was by far the most important. Although the book is limited to the paintings housed in Russian galleries, it includes the work of some less known/ little appreciated artists, some of whom are really impressive. The text is not particularly analytical, and if you're used to reading French you shouldn't need to use the dictionary very much.

The software is very disappointing and certainly does not do what it says on the tin(!) It should scan in scores and convert them to Sibelius format for editing and printing. It also claims it can scan in and "understand" manuscript scores. I tried to scan in both sorts of score: it failed miserably with both. The 10 stave printed score had so many errors it may have been easier for me to start again and input it from scratch!!

This is probably the best recording I have ever heard of these pieces. Wonderful clarity and pace, great orchestral playing of some of the greatest music ever written. And you get a lot of bonus music including the St. Anthony Variations, Alto Rhapsody and the Tragic and Academic Festival Overtures. What's not to like?!

A remarkable "old fashioned" Spanish textbook designed for use in the 1960s. Don't expect any 21st century vocabulary with regard to technology etc. However, as an adult learner with good prior knowledge of other languages I found this book really helpful.

Particularly interesting is the speed and sequence the author introduces grammatical points. These are presented really clearly, and there are lots of translations etc. So, if you are used to studying foreign languages to a reasonable level and want to get your head around Spanish quickly, this is likely to be a really useful book. You'll probably have to supplement it with a CD to get you up to speed with the spoken language though.

5.0 out of 5 stars energy and integrity of these performances by three of the world's great orchestras is remarkable, 19 Aug. 2014

Bernstein's affinity with Mahler's music is well known. He was largely responsible for the revival of interest in his work in the 1960s. The clarity, energy and integrity of these performances by three of the world's great orchestras is remarkable, and a tribute to one of the great conductors of the last century.

The shortened version of the classic French grammar textbook "Le Bon Usage" much used by advanced students of French. The clarity of presentation is impressive. I just wish I had been taught English grammar this effectively!

This is a superb performance of some of Schumann's most technically difficult music. Michelangeli's famous technique and attention to detail is evident in abundance: thoroughly recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars Tchaikovsky Symphonies 4,5,6, 18 July 2009
Tchaikovsky's last three symphonies are here performed by the Berliner Philharmonker at the very top of their game under the baton of Hebert von Karajan. Karajan was a sometimes controversial figure who nevertheless transformed the image and sound of one of the world's great orchestras.

He had a special affinity with Tchaikovsky's music and these are quite exceptional performances. If you like your Tchaikovsky to sound more Russian, you may prefer the Leningrad Phil's performances under Mavrinsky, but for me this is some of the best Tchaikovsky playing I have heard.

The Angry Island: Hunting the English
The Angry Island: Hunting the English
by A. A. Gill
Edition: Hardcover

3.0 out of 5 stars Hunting the English, 18 July 2009
A.A. Gill, best known as a food writer who has courted controversy with outspoken published views of the Welsh amongst others in the past , here deconstructs various aspects of the English psyche via a collection of essays(including class, drink, voice, gardens and our attitude to the countryside via a piece on the Cotswolds).

His thesis that the most characteristic aspect of the English is their collective and individual anger is on the whole cleverly developed. Speaking as an Englishman with Scots and Welsh ancestry who has for many years been aware of many of the tensions and inconsistencies described here I welcome Gill's frankness and can identify with many of his points.

Although the quality of the writing is inconsistent, the best bits are certainly worth waiting for.
