3.0 out of 5 stars Badly produced, 12 Sept. 2014
This small paperback is not cheap but, feels like it is-poor quality paper and print, shoddily reproduced photographs, no references or footnotes, not even an index. It badly needed a family tree in order to keep track of the extended families. The author supposes a previous knowledge of several of the minor players and more infuriatingly a knowledge of French, which she quotes extensively, with no translation, an old fashioned intellectual snobbery

The Fateful Year: England 1914
The Fateful Year: England 1914

5.0 out of 5 stars Biography of a year, 24 April 2014
This is a fascinating book. Because of the momentous happening in 1914 we rarely hear about other happenings. This gives us a social history of the year that was interrupted by the war. I felt that the balance was just right and enjoyed reading several individual stories. I hope Mark Bostridge will write about the rest of the conflict in a similar way.

4.0 out of 5 stars Poses questions, 24 April 2014
This book poses questions about our treatment of the mentally ill in society. Have we become more enlightened in our "care in the community" times or did closing the asylums rob sufferers of a refuge and resource? I did find the details of the writers own journey through psychotherapy a bit self indulgent but she had much of value to share in regard to the attitudes and values in the not too distant past.

3.0 out of 5 stars Pity the Mrs, 24 April 2014
This review is from: Mrs. Hemingway (Hardcover)
This was very well written and sucked me into the time and especially places recorded, but I ended up finding the antics of this spoiled child of a man rather tedious.

4.0 out of 5 stars At the heart of power?, 7 Mar. 2014
I enjoyed reading about the social and family lives of these glamorous and rather self obsessed women. The political parts of the book were less engaging. The sisters knew men at the heart of British government but I couldn't see that they had much influence on power or policy. The sections on politics sometimes fit awkwardly into the narrative about the sister's lives. Their story is well told and is sometimes very touching.

3.0 out of 5 stars Not Germania, 7 Mar. 2014
Less successful than Germania, the patchwork approach is more of an irritation here. The author avoids telling us much about the more recent Habsburgs but the detail about the Holy Roman Empire became tedious to me.
