4.0 out of 5 stars Good Album but lacking the Killer Song, 21 May 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: RHINE GOLD (Audio CD)
The Choir of Young Believer's second aibum (Rhine Gold) is in many way the exact opposite of their first (this is for the white in your eyes) which contained a series of pretty ordinary songs with the exception of the brilliant Hollow Talk. In contrast, Rhine Gold offers a series of much more interesting, atmospheric and emotive songs but doesn't contain that very special track (or tracks) than would have transported it from the very good to the truly exceptional.

5.0 out of 5 stars An absolute gem, 7 Mar 2013

Rebekka Karijard's latest aibum, We Become Ourselves, is an absolute gem. The entire albums is infused with haunting melodies, hypnotic arrangements and intelligent lyrics, from the pulsing tempo of the opening track (Prayer), through the almost calypso qualities of Multicoloured Hummingbird to the funeral meloncholy of the final track (Bandages) the listener is never in doubt that this is music for grown ups.
Some of her songs are slightly reminiscent of her fellow Scandanavian songstressess (particular Ane Brun and Ingrid Olava) but that's no bad thing because, in this reviewers humble opinion, the current crop of Scandanavian female singer songwriters is exceptional and Ms Karijard's work never comes close to losing it's own distinctive quality..
I don't know whether there is such a thing as a Scandavian sound, but for anyone who wants to listen to music that resonates beyond the ear and touches the place where our hopes, fears, dreams, pain, joy and aspirations live, I not only recommend this album, but also suggest that you look north and check out Ane Brun, Ingrid Olava, Susan Sundfor, Agnes Obel, Nina Kinert and other Scandanavian female singer songwriters

The replacemenmt battery arrived on time and works perfectly. Only time will tell whether it lasts the course but judging by its current performance I've no reason to suspect any problems.

5.0 out of 5 stars Haunting, Original and Quite Extraordinary, 20 Dec 2012

This review is from: Narrow (Audio CD)
'Narrow' is the follow up to the young Austrian's brilliant first album (Lovetune for Vacuum) and is nothing short of extraordinary in its orginality and emotional resonance. Her vocal performance is astonishing - at times it's as if each word is being dragged, kicking and screaming, from some raw, dark recess of her soul. She sings in German, French and English, but you really don't need to know the words to understand what she is trying to say. A rare and original talent.

Another little gem from Scandanavia. However, Linnea Olsson is a little different from her fellow Scandanavian singer songwriters - who base their music around more traditional piano or guitar arrangements - Ms Olsson plays the cello and sings. This is not only a pretty orginal approach in itself (can't think of another cellist singer/songwriter) but also the cello's inherent tonality necessitates a subtlely different range of rhythms and tones underpining her songs. Consequently, her work generally stays closer to the Agnes Obel 'classically' structured compositions than the more jazz, blues, folk influenced works of Ane Brun, Ingrid Olava or Nina Kinert. Vocally she doesn't come close to the range and tonal subtlety of Ingrid Olava, Susan Sundfor or Ane Brun, but she knows how to deliver her own compositions with enough passion and flair to keep the listener enraptured and eager for more.

5.0 out of 5 stars Sulphur, spiderwebs and fire. Simply brilliant., 21 Oct 2012

This review is from: Guest [VINYL] (Audio CD)
I don't know how a small country like Norway can produce so many exceptionally talented female singer songwriters. Maybe it's something in the water. If so, I suggest that the rest of the world starts importing the stuff by the barrel load. Whatever the reason, there is no doubt that The Guest is one of the finest and most original albums that I've heard in a very long time and captapults Ingrid Olava alongside the her better known countrywomen, Ane Brun and Susanne Sundfor, as artists who deserve worldwide recognition for their talent and originality. If Ms Olava's hauntingly beautiful first album, Juliet's Wishes, established her credentials as a very fine vocalist and talented songwriter, then The Guest is a quantum leap in intensity and innovation that carries her into the realm of the exceptional. This album is simply brilliant. Her music hovers between worlds of sulphur, spiderwebs and fire, and her lyrics capture loss and discovery, hope and despair, rebellion and surrender, and every decibel is infused with sincerity and most of all passion. Thank you Ms Olava and keep drinking the water.

5.0 out of 5 stars worth buying for the title track alone, 26 Aug 2012

Although it's not unreasonable to compare Grace Potter to Janis Joplin, Grace Slick and other great American female country/blues singers, she is very much her own artist with her own distinctive vocal style. All the songs on this album are self-penned by Grace and the band and I'd be happy to buy the album for the title track alone. Nothing But The Water has more of an intimate, acoustic feel than her other albums which allows the listener to focus on the vocals and musical subtleties. My personal favourite of her albums to date and one that you'd have to be tone deaf not to enjoy.

5.0 out of 5 stars a brilliantly emotive and original piece of work, 26 Aug 2012

Nightly Disease may not have quite as many of Madrugada's seminal tracks as the ground breaking Industrial Silence, but it's still a brilliantly emotive and original piece of work. The deluxe version offers an additional 19 tracks and is well worth the extra. It's impossible to catagorise Madrugada's work other than to say that they somehow manage to skip through the different musical genres without ever losing the central core of their unique musical vision. Buy, listen and enjoy.

4.0 out of 5 stars much better than anyone could reasonably expect, 26 Aug 2012

Haley Reinhart's post-American Idol debut album is much better than anyone could reasonably expect given the one dimensional, narrow commercialism of the offerings from most previous Idol contestants. It's a tad too poppy and over produced for my taste - and a couple of slower, stripped back, more blues/jazz based numbers wouldn't have gone amiss - but taken as a whole it's a pretty good album. Ms Reinhart's vocals have that sultry, smokey edge that sets her from most of her contemporaries and there isn't a bad track on the album. She also co-wrote most of the numbers which bodes well for her future both as a singer and a songwriter.

5.0 out of 5 stars Beautiful, Haunting and Absolutely Brilliant., 18 April 2012

Ane Brun has been selling records and filling Stadia in Scandanavia for almost a decade, but despite having one of those unmistakable voices that once heard is never forgotten, writing brilliant, haunting, emotionally intellegent songs (almost exclusively in English)that linger at the back of the mind long after the music has stopped, she is still relatively unknown in the UK and elsewhere. A Norwegian, living in Sweden, Ane Brun is one of the most original, brilliant and underrated singer/song writing talents around, and Temporary Dive is as near perfect as any album could reasonably hope to be.
