2.0 out of 5 stars Shaved heads and exotic snakes, 9 Aug 2014
There are certain things that spoil this production. A couple being: a) THAT the partly clean shaved hairstyle of the protagonist might appeal to modern youngsters, one understands, but to show the viking children amazed at the monk shaving his head, when their adults did the same, did not ring true. b) Showing huge snakes. of the size in the king's pit, without some fantastic tale of how they got/ to Northern England from Africa, or wherever they were/are native, ( A dark age trade in snakes!) insulted the watchers intelligence. Maybe the show would work better as a kid's cartoon.

1.0 out of 5 stars Book theme and author bias confliction., 7 April 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
The serious subject matter was for me spoilt when the author went in for an anti-protestant tirade. Scottish Protestants, in the section of Rangers football supporters shouting abuse at Celtic fans, (nothing about abuse the other way) were particularly vilified. The fact that people do let off steam, at sports events, does not give him an excuse to magnify it into a cruel oppressor/poor victim story. The individual disempowerment, that people on both sides of such stories have historically suffered, when they have absorbed the like, is well known.

The author ends that section with the words - "Our time will come." The reader is left to surmise what he meant by that. American Protestants also get his censure.

The whole thing is a distraction from the theme of the book, which seems to be an attack on the Christian church as a whole. One is left wondering if the Illuminatti is a Pro-Catholic, anti-Protestant secret organisation, or if the author had left his own hates distract him from the books main theme and what the Illuminatti is positively about.

However on the plus side is a good creative writing lesson on how not to put a book out. The need to edit and remove sections that are erroneous, after the fun of letting rip in your first draft,is appreciated. Those section can always go into another book.

Author distraction caused dissatisfaction!

5.0 out of 5 stars A Welcome Return, 8 Nov 2012

I read this book many years ago, in the days when L.S.D. was going strong. It therefore had an interest to my generation.

At the time I remembered thinking that "The Doors of Perception" was basically about Aldous Huxley's experiences and reflections whilst on mescaline. He also asked about such expereinces being a doorway into the world of schizophrenia and wondered if it would be worth reconsidering the philosopher Bergson's idea of the brain being basically an eliminative organ, to stop us being overwhelmed by impressions, so we can function in the everyday world. Both points are worthy of argument and Youtube has a video where he speaks, from the book,on the latter.

Heaven and Hell, which I preferred at the time is an essay on how over history people's minds have been opened up a world beyond the everyday experience of the ego (he calls it that "interfering neurotic" in the first book). Anyone who has had an aesthetic experience will know something about that "opening up". There can be beauty, in it's truest sense but there can be horror. There can be good trips and there can be bad trips. There can be ecstasy but there can be madness. There can be heaven and there can be hell (the land of lit-up-ness, as he describes it).

A worthy and fascinating read, of perennial interest, which I am pleased to return to on kindle and would certainly recommend.

2.0 out of 5 stars Swan Fake, 28 Oct 2009
I wanted a traditional production and I get this. Sorry, I feel I have wasted my money.

The web site should mske it clear, at first, as to what the nature of the production is. Male swans ruin it for me and rob the important element of magic from Tchaicovky's work. The magical power to trasport an audience is one of the ballet's strenghs. Whether that be in the white spiritual esotoric scenes or the more colourful exotoric ones.

This production does violence to that. Though for psuedo intellectuals it might appeal conversation wise as a "Brave" production. That's the usual excuse.

2.0 out of 5 stars Heston makes his first splash, 28 Oct 2009

This is an amatuer production so you can't expect much. It is only a pity that there are not better films of this famous work.

The sight of the 17 year old Charlton Heston making huge splashes as he walks up a stream or narrow river could be described as a precurser to his later parting of the Red Sea, as Moses.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent authentic production, 28 Oct 2009

An excellent production that attempts to capture the originals.

The Rites of Spring is certainly a seminal work. The music hits primitive places. A production of primitive thrust and savage beauty.

1.0 out of 5 stars Shoddy Manufacture, 28 Oct 2009
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
My first disappointment on receiving this DVD was to find out it was kids cartoons. The web site could have made that clear and the age it was aimed at.

The second fault was with the manufacture. The box and disk were labelled Robin Hood and Camelot. However Pocahuntas and something else were what the DVD offered. So obviously
a cheap production by a maufacturer who could not care less about customer's wishes. Be warned!
