5.0 out of 5 stars Must-buy cookbook, 2 Mar. 2013
This review is from: Easy Vegan (Cookery) (Paperback)
I have been a vegan for 18 months and this book is by far the best recipe book I've found. It's great to see recipes that avoid the 'substitute' foods, instead including whole food based recipes which are healthy and well-balanced - what every vegan wants. The book also makes extensive use of fresh herbs and spices, which is very important to keep vegan food fresh and exciting. By celebrating the variety of fruits, vegetables, legumes and other natural ingredients that are available, this book makes veganism appear accessible, healthy and delicious instead of exclusive and daunting.

5.0 out of 5 stars Ethics + Quality = Fantastic Product, 6 July 2012

For almost as long as I can remember I have swooned over the delightfully punk boots that are Dr Martens. Durable, comfortable and fashionable, DMs have a reputation for being some of the best boots on the market with only one problem: they are made from leather, or in other words, the skin of a dead animal. Years after Dr Martens pulled their original vegan line, the non-leather boot is back but apart from the tiny phrase 'Suitable for Vegans' printed on the insole, it's almost impossible to tell that these are made with entirely man-made materials. I've even had a few comments along the lines of "I didn't think vegans wore leather shoes" before I was able to explain that they were imitation. The same thing goes for durability and comfort: the boots feel and act as if they were made from real leather but with the added bonus of a shorter wearing-in period. As far as fashion goes, the boots maintain the classic DM look but with a few subtle differences from their leather counterparts such as the gold eyelets rather than black and a slight two-tone effect which are both nice touches.

At a similar price to the leather versions I would recommend these to anyone, vegan, vegetarian, omnivore or space alien, because they are simply wonderful. Thank you Dr Martens for bringing ethics and quality together, it's just a shame there aren't more colours available or I would be buying several more pairs.

4.0 out of 5 stars Brilliant!, 26 Nov. 2011

This review is from: Chew Volume 4: Flambe (Paperback)
Everything about the Chew series is excellent - the humorous yet macabre storylines, the fleshed out and believable alternate world it is set in, the characters, the art, the writing... I could go on, but I think you get the idea. The only reason I didn't rate this as a five star item is because of the length - I find all of the issues quite small, with only five chapters (instead of the conventional six) per volume. That isn't to say that those chapters are bad, quite the contrary, it just leaves you wanting more and now that I am up to date with the comic, I know there will be a fairly long wait until the next issue. However the fact that it does leave you wanting more is a sign that it is a good read and the series is light-hearted enough to re-read several times anyway. As an individual story this volume takes an extra-terrestrial turn which could twist into an even sillier, but never over the top, plot line in the coming volumes. If you haven't read the first volumes, buy them now. If you have, buy this one now!

5.0 out of 5 stars Must-have item, 26 Nov. 2011

This book is excellent for anyone wanting to learn about Warhol as a normal person, rather than the eccentric artist he is often described as. Written from recorded conversations and memos (Warhol claimed to have a terrible memory), it feels as if he is talking right to you and because of this it is excellently paced and quick to read. It is a funny, moving and insightful view into the world of one extraordinary man. Even those who aren't fans of Warhol and his art would still find it a great read, and if you think you know Warhol, this book will make you think again.

1.0 out of 5 stars Not the real deal!!, 6 Feb. 2010

This review is from: Scrubs 1-8 Complete Season (DVD)
Whatever you do, don't buy this! Scrubs seasons 1-8 isn't actually available to buy anywhere (legally) yet. You can buy up to season 7 in the UK and pre-order 8, and I think 8 is for sale on region 1 DVD in America only.

Unfortunately I found this out the hard way by receiving dodgily photoshopped packaging, complete with spelling mistakes and a total lack of authenticity. And to top it off the discs didn't even work.

Basically, although it's nice to have all the episodes in one box, it's not nice to have them all in one counterfeit box and not be able to watch them. It's also generally cheaper to buy each series separately, which is what I am now going to do after spending nearly 3 weeks trying to get my money back.
