5.0 out of 5 stars Thelonius Monk Live In '66 (DVD), 11 Jun. 2011

This is the Monk Quartet featuring Charlie Rouse, Larry Gales and Ben Riley on two sets running for about half an hour each, filmed without an audience. The first was done in Oslo in 1966, the other in Denmark the same year. Hence we get two versions of `Lulu's Back In Town' but they are equally interesting; also featured are `Blue Monk', Don't Blame Me' (piano solo), `Epistrophy' and `Round Midnight'. I've been a fan of Monk's music for a very long time and have enjoyed seeing his extraordinary keyboard style and peculiar body-language close up on this DVD. Fascinating.

I've been buying Billie Holiday records for half a century and never been disappointed. Her early recordings with Teddy Wilson, Lester Young etc on Columbia get played most often chez moi, but these later Verve sessions have their moments. The highlight for me on this CD is the terrific song 'We'll Be Together Again' with super tenor sax solo by Ben Webster; this is worth the price alone.

I wouldn't go as far as to call these excellent quality, but they are no worse than any others I've seen. They are not very rigid, rather soft and bendy. There must be reason why empty dvd cases are rarely as good as those that come with DVDs, perhaps someone would care to hazard a guess.

This is one of my favourite films from 1960s. A woman who believes herself to be a `psychic' (superb performance by Kim Stanley) talks her downtrodden husband (great performance by Richard Attenborough) into kidnapping a schoolgirl so she can reveal her powers to the world by `finding' the girl. This edition (Network, 2006) has good picture quality but lousy sound: the dialogue is far too quiet and the music and effects are too loud. The previous edition (Carlton, 2004) had better sound plus optional subtitles in English for hard of hearing, but the picture was grainier and not as good.

4.0 out of 5 stars C-Media Speed-Link external audio card, 4 Mar. 2011

Having wrecked both audio outputs on my computer, I plugged this device into a USB port and a message appeared saying not enough bandwidth available (because too much hardware was already in use, including a modem). My operating system is XP and the only remedy I've found so far is to start the computer without the modem connected, and then while a media player is operating, connect the modem. This procedure re-allocates the bandwidth. Not convenient but not the fault of the sound card - which works fine. Sound quality is less impressive than the internal sound card but good enough.

3.0 out of 5 stars Premier AV SB-D9020 9-inch Multiregion Portable DVD Player, 31 Dec. 2010

This robust little player excels at playing Region 1/NTSC DVDs. It plays Region 2/PAL perfectly well but reduces the picture size slightly. It plays a DVD-R disc OK but ticks like a clock all the way through, which can be distracting at close quarters. The player runs off mains or built-in battery and has a comprehensive range of input and output sockets. A big improvement to the sound can be made by connecting a pair of active (self-powered) speakers to the earphone output socket. A little over-priced, I feel - but the same could be said about the other brands.

4.0 out of 5 stars Sony DEJ011S.CEQ CD Walkman, 16 July 2010

This product arrives in a bubble pack so the first challenge is to extract it without damaging anything inside or outside the package. The player is neat and lightweight, functional rather than stylish. The earphones are hook-shaped and good enough for purpose; the lead is just 1 metre. The player sounds good; it has a shuffle option and choice of tone settings. Batteries are not supplied (2 x AA-size are required); mains adaptor is not supplied. Being of an age where eyesight is not perfect, I regret that the controls are tiny and black in colour against a black background.

4.0 out of 5 stars Thelonious Monk - Monk Round The World (Thelonious Records/Hyena Records), 2 July 2010

This review is from: Monk 'round The World (Audio CD)
Here we have a 56-minute CD comprising seven Monk Quartet tracks recorded 1961-64 at various locations. The sound quality is decent enough. Charlie Rouse on tenor sax is in attendance throughout. Having a liking for Frankie Dunlop on drums, tracks 1, 4 and 5 are the stand-outs for me, but there are no duff items. In the same package is a DVD (black-and-white picture, slightly less satisfactory sound); this runs about 28 mins and shows the Monk Quartet doing three numbers at the smoky, sweaty Marquee Club, London, in 1965. Taken in the round, the package is interesting and collectable.

On this DVD player the sound quality and picture quality were good straight out of the box. Following instructions by reviewer Mr Graham Fairclough I was able to start playing Region 1 DVDs immediately (thanks, Graham) and was as happy as a pig in - er - clover.

This is neat item but I feel a bit less enthusiastic than some other reviewers. I have a lot of old films on DVD in 4:3 aspect ratio and find that the TV has to be changed manually to suit these; some TVs make the necessary adjustment automatically. Another drawback seems to be that the 5-core component connecting lead recommended on screen during the setup processed has to be purchased and it is not cheap, and it doesn't work for me even though I tried with differing DVD players. I had to settle for the jolly old SCART lead again.
