3.0 out of 5 stars Good but not great, 28 Mar. 2012

Having enjoyed a 19" version of the set, I decided to get this 22" as well. It took twenty days to arrive. Fixing the stand involved the very awkward placing of three screws which, in any case, seemed too long for the job; I had to rob the 19" of its shorter screws to resolve the matter. That sort of assembly problem should not be happening in these clip-on days. When powered up and tuned in, the 22" ran sweetly and the picture was fine and once again calmness reigned in the land. The handset is enormous - jolly good - too big to get lost or mixed up with others. There are three picture mode settings: Dynamic (i.e. very bright), Standard and Movie. On the Movie setting my old black-and-white films on DVD take on an unwelcome tint. There is no obvious remedy for this other than to play them in the Standard setting.

4.0 out of 5 stars All things considered, 21 Mar. 2012

This chair was a nice price and was delivered quickly, but the shipping charge seemed high. The container was rather flimsy cardboard, so I was surprised that the chair arrived undamaged. Assembly was fairly simple and the chair's adjustment mechanisms seemed straightforward even for a not-very-handyman. It is comfortable, swivels smoothly, tilts if you want it to, and all things considered I am pleased with the purchase. One small point: housepersons with sensitive noses may be displeased by the smell of the chair - the odour is quite strong and lingers for days.

3.0 out of 5 stars Sony DVPSR750.CEK DVD Player, 13 Mar. 2012

This is a multi region DVD player in the sense that it plays commercially-produced DVDs that are region coded. My collection of films includes Region 1, Region 2 and Region 4; this neat and stylish player handles them equally well. Sadly I discovered that it does not like my DVD-Rs (these are personal copies of borrowed and rented films and therefore they are not region coded). On this player they keep freezing or won't start at all, whereas on my other DVD players - a Philips and a Toshiba - they play without a hitch. I queried the point with the retailer but received no reply. Xvid files copied from computer to data DVDs play OK on computers but slip gradually and badly out of synch on the Sony and many other freestanding players; it is a well-known phenomenon for which I can offer no fix. Despite all the disappointments, I felt that the Sony was good enough to keep because it is well-designed and the picture quality is impressive. I play DVDs that are region coded on it, and other kinds of DVDs on another player.
Update 21 March 2012: The retailer replaced the Sony but the shortcomings remain as described above. Pity.

4.0 out of 5 stars Phoenix SV70 premium edition, 22 Nov. 2011
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This DVD player is made by Sum Vision of China. In the box with the player are instruction book, remote control with batteries, and rudimentary connecting leads (scart and 3-plug to 3-plug composite). There is a socket for HDMI but no lead. Other features are listed in the technical details on this page. The top and front of the player are covered with cling film; after much squinting and face pulling I managed to remove it. The player is about two-thirds of the width of my previous player which was a Philips. Allowing for connections and ventilation, I would say the Phoenix needs an overall space about 12 inches (30cm) square. The player looks compact, robust and straightforward. Manual operation is a bit clunky and the remote control is medium size with tiny buttons that seem to be designed for slender Chinese fingers. The mains input socket is uncomfortably close to the scart socket, and so it is difficult to keep the two leads from touching. The player makes very little noise when running - which is a blessing. The maximum fast forward/backward speed is 16x. I have a very simple TV & 2-speaker audio setup and saw no reason to depart from the player's default settings. I tried a Region 1 DVD, Region 2, Region 4, homemade DVD-R, CD and homemade disc of mp3s, and it played them all with commendable ease without any adjustments being necessary. The only peculiarity that I've noticed so far is that the LED display on the front of the unit does not show hours; therefore a DVD at 1hour 10 mins and 40 secs shows as just 10 mins and 40 secs. This can be a little confusing at times but there is, however, an OSD button to reveal the full and proper time elapsed and time remaining. The Phoenix is no world beater but I paid £36.95 and consider it to be worth every penny.

5.0 out of 5 stars Crepuscule (2009), 13 Jun. 2011

This review is from: Twilight ( Crepuscule ) (DVD)
This film is quite short (an hour and ten minutes); it is in black-and-white with noir-ish touches. I would describe it as a study of loneliness. Nellie Benner plays a young woman who arrives in the city (Amsterdam), takes a room and gets a job in a carwash. She is isolated, a bit odd and frightened, and her mental state deteriorates from bad to worse. Ms Benner handles her character's changes of personality very well, and makes us care about her. The music and sound effects are interesting in their own right, and the film as a whole - despite the absence of a storyline or dialogue - seems to hang together perfectly. I like it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Thelonius Monk Live In '66 (DVD), 11 Jun. 2011
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This is the Monk Quartet featuring Charlie Rouse, Larry Gales and Ben Riley on two sets running for about half an hour each, filmed without an audience. The first was done in Oslo in 1966, the other in Denmark the same year. Hence we get two versions of `Lulu's Back In Town' but they are equally interesting; also featured are `Blue Monk', Don't Blame Me' (piano solo), `Epistrophy' and `Round Midnight'. I've been a fan of Monk's music for a very long time and have enjoyed seeing his extraordinary keyboard style and peculiar body-language close up on this DVD. Fascinating.

I've been buying Billie Holiday records for half a century and never been disappointed. Her early recordings with Teddy Wilson, Lester Young etc on Columbia get played most often chez moi, but these later Verve sessions have their moments. The highlight for me on this CD is the terrific song 'We'll Be Together Again' with super tenor sax solo by Ben Webster; this is worth the price alone.

I wouldn't go as far as to call these excellent quality, but they are no worse than any others I've seen. They are not very rigid, rather soft and bendy. There must be reason why empty dvd cases are rarely as good as those that come with DVDs, perhaps someone would care to hazard a guess.

4.0 out of 5 stars Séance On A Wet Afternoon, 20 Mar. 2011

This is one of my favourite films from 1960s. A woman who believes herself to be a `psychic' (superb performance by Kim Stanley) talks her downtrodden husband (great performance by Richard Attenborough) into kidnapping a schoolgirl so she can reveal her powers to the world by `finding' the girl. This edition (Network, 2006) has good picture quality but lousy sound: the dialogue is far too quiet and the music and effects are too loud. The previous edition (Carlton, 2004) had better sound plus optional subtitles in English for hard of hearing, but the picture was grainier and not as good.

4.0 out of 5 stars C-Media Speed-Link external audio card, 4 Mar. 2011

Having wrecked both audio outputs on my computer, I plugged this device into a USB port and a message appeared saying not enough bandwidth available (because too much hardware was already in use, including a modem). My operating system is XP and the only remedy I've found so far is to start the computer without the modem connected, and then while a media player is operating, connect the modem. This procedure re-allocates the bandwidth. Not convenient but not the fault of the sound card - which works fine. Sound quality is less impressive than the internal sound card but good enough.
