Vivaldi: The Four Seasons - Die vier Jahreszeiten
Vivaldi: The Four Seasons - Die vier Jahreszeiten
Price: £4.66

4.0 out of 5 stars Here it is, 29 Jun 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
The only thing I don't like about this particular CD version (published in 2012 by EMI Germany as part of Red Line series) is its dreary cover design. The performance (recorded in 1958) is super and the sound quality is good and clear. If you want a version of Vivaldi's Four Seasons try this first - you might not feel the need to look any further.

4.0 out of 5 stars On my toes, 29 Jun 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Being an elderly gentleman my interest in having pretty feet is not great, but I gave this product a try because there were signs of fungal infections around my toes. For instance a big toe nail had become brittle and had cracked from side-to-side halfway down. A thorough application of the product on and between toes after each bath brought about improvement after 3-4 weeks and worked totally after six weeks. The 60ml jar is small (about 6 cm high and about 5.7 in diameter) but a little of the stuff spreads a long way - and it smells nice. It gets four stars instead of five only because it is quite expensive. I was impressed enough to order some pure unrefined shea butter for general skin use and can report that's good too.

4.0 out of 5 stars Nearly as good as they say, 5 Jun 2013

As an unreconstructed 1960s Blue Note hard bop fan I relished the idea of this DVD even though the concert was recorded as late as 1985. It has unaccompanied solo excursions by pianists Cecil Taylor and McCoy Tyner and guitarist Stanley Jordan, otherwise it's small group permutations drawn from the following collective personnel:

Alto sax: Jackie McLean, Lou Donaldson; Double bass: Cecil McBee, Reggie Workman, Ron Carter; Drums: Art Blakey, Grady Tate, Jack DeJohnette, Tony Williams; Flute: James Newton; Guitar: Kenny Burrell; Organ: Jimmy Smith; Piano: Herbie Hancock, Michel Petrucciani, Walter Davis Jr; Soprano sax: Grover Washington Jr; Tenor sax: Charles Lloyd, Joe Henderson, Johnny Griffin, Stanley Turrentine; Trombone: Curtis Fuller; Trumpet and flugelhorn: Freddie Hubbard; Trumpet: Woody Shaw; Vibes: Bobby Hutcherson.

I was a little disappointed that Art Blakey performs only one number (the inevitable Moanin') and doesn't take a solo on it. Pity not to see Horace Silver on stage - who could be more Blue Note? All things considered though, this is a pretty solid couple of hours' jazz with few dull moments. The DVD is in aspect ratio 4:3 (not widescreen); the colour picture quality is good and so is the sound.

3.0 out of 5 stars Dulcima (1971) Import from Australia, 19 May 2013
This film is not highly rated on International Movie Database, and seems to be missing altogether from Rotten Tomatoes.com. Nevertheless it is quite an engaging little story of a relationship between an elderly, widowed farmer and a not-very-innocent village girl. The story is by H. E. Bates, the original writer behind Darling Buds of May, My Uncle Silas and more. Here, John Mills and Carol White take the lead parts and play them very well. What lets down this particular DVD version is that the picture quality is not up to standard - it's fairly dark and has a green hue. The sound quality is not brilliant either. I would award four stars for the film but only two stars for the DVD.

3.0 out of 5 stars Just OK, 22 April 2013

The mains lead has a 2-pin plug. A 3-pin adapter is supplied but this not straightforward - you would need a small screwdriver with which to assemble it. The radio has AM, FM and FM-Stereo settings but overall the radio performance seems poor. The tuning dial is small and so is the aerial, so it's exceptionally difficult to pinpoint some stations accurately. The CD player isn't bad at the price and there is an aux input for connecting some other device. As another reviewer said, you get what you pay for. In this case it is not very much.

5.0 out of 5 stars CRIA CUERVOS - ITALIAN IMPORT, 22 April 2013
This review is from: Cria Cuervos... (DVD)
Five stars for this film about three young orphaned girls and their relationships with their mother, aunt, nanny and grandma. It shifts seamlessly back and forth in time and therefore would reward a second viewing. You would fall in love with little Ana Torrent's big dark eyes if nothing else. Geraldine Chaplin plays mother but is not on screen most of the time. Director Carlos Saura displays his usual certainty and flair. Prospective buyers of this particular DVD version of the film (Italian import on the San Paulo label, 2009) please note that the film is in Spanish language with optional Spanish or Italian subtitles. THERE ARE NO ENGLISH SUBTITLES ON THIS DVD.

2.0 out of 5 stars Mini Clip MP3 Player Support 32GB Micro SD Card (lgking supply), 4 Mar 2013

This tiny device's lack of written instructions would be inconvenient for a first-time user of an mp3 player and/or first-time user of a Micro SD card. It has no internal memory so you need to insert your own Micro SD card; I can confirm it works with 32Gb. The device connects to Windows 7 without fuss and then you drag-and-drop mp3s or sync via Windows Media Player, or you could download directly from sites such as Amazon Cloud Player or Spotify if you know how. The choice of format is mp3 or WMA - that's all. The supplied earphones are cheap rubbish, high-quality earphones pick up a whirring noise in the background and other unwanted operating sounds, and so an inbetweeny pair of maybe Philips or Sony `phones would be better. The device ignores folders; what you end up with is a mighty long list of individual mp3s arranged alphabetically by title and playing automatically from the beginning - with no shuffle option. Even at such a low price I can't really recommend this for ordinary everyday use.

4.0 out of 5 stars George Russell - Seven Classic Albums, 28 Feb 2013

The late-1950s/early-1960s period is my favourite in jazz; yes folks I was there! It is a period well-served by this company cleverly named Real Gone Jazz. Another customer has kindly provided a tracklist of the seven albums. The first two have comparatively large ensembles and the remaining five are sextet/septet. The EZZ-THETICS album may be the pick of the bunch - it features Eric Dolphy. The box set's booklet lists the personnel on each album. Overall the sound quality lacks a little bit of resonance but is strong and clear enough.

5.0 out of 5 stars Sonny Rollins - Worktime, 14 Feb 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: Worktime (Audio CD)
Tenor saxist Sonny Rollins recorded this album just over six months before his legendary `Saxophone Colossus' and it finds him a similar quartet setting, this time with Ray Bryant (piano), George Morrow (double bass) and Max Roach (drums). If every Sonny Rollins album sounds like a textbook example of how to play jazz saxophone, this one sounds also like a demonstration of how to play jazz drums - Max Roach really shines here and at times nearly upstages the leader. The overall playing time is a bit short at 33 minutes but the final track, Cole Porter's composition It's All Right With Me, is such a scorcher that I wouldn't want anything to follow it. Good solid album, above average, recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars A next step, 8 Feb 2013

The album title `Best Of Blakey 60' is a bit puzzling. The tracks are Blue Note recordings dating from the early 1960s when the remarkable drummer Art Blakey was 40-ish years of age and in fine fettle. If you are familiar with the slightly earlier version of the Messengers featuring Lee Morgan (trumpet), Benny Golson (tenor sax), Bobby Timmons (piano) and Jymie Merritt (double bass) playing numbers such as Moanin' & Blues March, and wondering where to go next - this album would be an appropriate next step. The only difference here is that Mr Golson has been replaced by Wayne Shorter.
