Me Talk Pretty One Day
Me Talk Pretty One Day
Price: £5.99

2.0 out of 5 stars Quick read and witty in parts, 3 July 2014

Sedaris combines observational humour with a very active imagination in a very easy to read collection of short essays. I didn't always enjoy the humour of the book but it was certainly witty at times. I felt let down by his straying away from the observational to the fantastical in his storytelling, but still a book that left me smiling on the whole.

4.0 out of 5 stars Very Frank and Emotional Memoir, 8 Jun 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
From the start, Hitchens is frank and eloquent in his narrative about his own life, from childhood to family tragedy, from revolutionary fervour to a different blend of radicalism. He was a great essayist and it is primarily through essays that his story finds both its engine and its road to follow. It is a book that may make you think twice and a thoroughly enjoyable but emotive read.

The Bully Pulpit: Theodore Roosevelt and the Golden Age of Journalism

5.0 out of 5 stars Truly Inspirational, 21 April 2014

A fine book not just for aspiring politicians but also writers and more specifically investigative journalists. The personal and political histories of Roosevelt and Taft are charted with warmth and a vitality that makes them just as real today as our own crop of World Statesmen. The journeys of S.S. McClure, Ida Tarbell, John Phillips, Lincoln Steffens, William White and Baker from childhood to authors and editors of exposes eagerly read by Millions of Americans are equally compelling. Loved almost every page. Could not recommended it highly enough!

3.0 out of 5 stars Charmingly short, 14 Mar 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
A charmingly short portrait of Frank Sidebottom and the man underneath the mask, Chris. Insight also into the author's own early career. I found this book to be delightful without being too revealing. A book written out of a genuine respect and love without augmenting the truth.

3.0 out of 5 stars Good read, 2 Jan 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
I enjoyed it and read in less than 2 days flat. I find Ronson highly engaging as a writer and loved Psychopath Test. This book is a good read but in some ways a little too eclectic. Perhaps it should have stuck to just one theme rather than randomly including Dr Paisley and separately a chapter on an auction of Ceacescu's belongings. I also felt that calling Retinger merely the Secretary of Conrad prior to the Bildeberg group's foundation missed out a huge chunk of his cv including the foundation of the European Council and working for the Polish Government in exile during WWII. But to repeat, a good read nonetheless.

This review is from: MaddAddam (Kindle Edition)
Plot was much slower to develop compared to the previous two books in the trilogy but still worth reading as it tell the story of Zen and Adam One as well as the other God's Gardeners. It also further develops the evolution of Craker society and pigoons

5.0 out of 5 stars Sequel to Oryx and Crake, 18 Sep 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Only took me 5 days to read this book, fitting it around busy work days and social life, but this is because it gripped my attention from start to finish. I am a huge fan of the Author and I loved Oryx and Crake. I don't know why I took so long to get round to reading the Year of the Flood, perhaps it was because Penelopiad slightly disappointed me. This book does not disappoint. It runs parallel to events in Oryx and Crake with new perspectives and characters. Will have to read Madaddam soon.

3.0 out of 5 stars Interesting insights, 12 Sep 2013

Good detailed historical account with interesting insights. Occasionally leaves the reader swimming alone in evidence and detailed inventories. Would have been more comfortable with a stronger, more conclusive narrative. Certainly adds to historical debate surrounding Elizabeth and Dudley.

Self-help books out there. Having now read it fully, I can foresee myself dipping in and out of it as a valuable reference book. Helped me reconnect with the more ambitious me and has started the transformation already.
