Palace Of Desire: Cairo Trilogy 2 (The Cairo Trilogy)
Palace Of Desire: Cairo Trilogy 2 (The Cairo Trilogy)
by Naguib Mahfouz
Edition: Paperback
Price: £9.98

5.0 out of 5 stars Fahfouz at his best!, 25 Jun. 2014
Mahfouz was the first Arab author to win the Novel Prize for literature - and deservedly so.

The Cairo Trilogy is a wonderfully rich story that explores the growth and development of a single Cairo family through troubled times in Egypt.

In these troubled times of our own we need to understand our Muslim friends properly and these three classic contemporary novels go far to do just that.

If that were not enough, they are GREAT novels - poignant, moving, funny and full of rich historical detail.

You should not consider yourself well read until you have read all three of these wonderful novels.

The Quangle Wangle's Hat (Picture Mammoth)
by Edward Lear
Edition: Paperback

3.0 out of 5 stars Getting in a Quangle, 25 Jun. 2014
Very daft poem by Edward Lear and well illustrated by the ever reliable Helen Oxenbury. Fun book.

Jabberwocky and Other Poems (Dover Thrift Editions)
Jabberwocky and Other Poems (Dover Thrift Editions)
by Lewis Carroll
Edition: Paperback
Price: £2.40

4.0 out of 5 stars It's all Nonsense!, 25 Jun. 2014
English Nonsense poems have a long and distinguished history yet somehow, in the 1860's, they found two of the greatest exponents of this peculaily eccentric, quintessentially British genre.

And who were they?

Why, Edward Lear ('The Owl and the Pussycat', for example) and Lewis Carroll ('Alice in Wonderland, 'Beware the Jabberwock' etc.) both of who died within a year of each other.

Both of these authors are well represented here. If you like wit and wisdom, word-play, crazy characters and surreal humor then this book is definitely for you.

But watch out for slithy toves!

Captain Hornblower R.N.: Hornblower and the 'Atropos', The Happy Return, A Ship of the Line
Captain Hornblower R.N.: Hornblower and the 'Atropos', The Happy Return, A Ship of the Line
by C S Forester
Edition: Paperback
Price: £9.79

5.0 out of 5 stars Blow the horn for Hornblower!, 25 Jun. 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
I have arrived late in my admiration for C.S.Forester's wonderful novels set in the Royal Navy at the time of Nelson.

Not enough to have written 'The African Queen', Forester has here created an amazing series of eleven novels featuring the career - from junior Midshipman to Lord Admiral of the brave, intelligent often troubled hero Horatio Hornblower.

There are no nautical novels I know that match Forester's marine knowledge coupled with the ability to spin the most exciting battle yarns imaginable.

I'm hooked and so should you be!

1.0 out of 5 stars Blowing my top!, 25 Jun. 2014

Whistle it may be, supersonic it 'aint!

Not sure if the Trade Descriptions Act applies to dog whistles but when I tried this on my noisy neighbor's noisy dog it simple looked curious before falling back to sleep.

Apart from the little matter of it not being supersonic, IT MAKES AN AUDIBLE SOUND which rather defeats the object of secretly shutting up that dog without arousing the suspicions of your stupid, mutt-loving neighbor.

I binned my whistle. You should do the same or better still, not bother buying one from this company in the first place!

David Hockney: Three Early Suites - Grimm's Fairy Tales, the Blue Guitar, Poems of Cavafy
David Hockney: Three Early Suites - Grimm's Fairy Tales, the Blue Guitar, Poems of Cavafy
by Peter Webb
Edition: Paperback

4.0 out of 5 stars Early Hockney, 25 Jun. 2014

This fine collection of early drawings and silver point etchings by Hockney is something of a treat for those who like his work.

I do - but with reservations.

The engravings here are small, quirky and original but for me Hockney remains a great illustrator and not the somewhat overrated painter he has subsequently become.

4.0 out of 5 stars Secret no Moore!, 25 Jun. 2014

This classic children's story has finally found an illustrator worthy of it. Her name is Inga Moore and her colored illustrations are absolutely beautiful.

So, Grandma and Granddad - I cannot think of a better gift for one's literate granddaughter or grandson than this delightful book.
