She may have been the hottest woman on the planet once but this compilation of JB's music shows that she was not much of a singer. I have seen some rare footage of her singing live and she pulls it off - in every sense - but cold listening reveals a weak voice, a surprisingly poor sense of timing and elaborate embellishments that are at time frankly embarrassing.

None of this, of course, detracts from her charisma as a dancer at a time when Paris was full of great musical talent. She was a remarkable, independent woman in her own right and a black American that must make the nation proud.

I have ordered her biography for despite her uneven singing talent, she is a woman I want to know more about.

And so should YOU!

3.0 out of 5 stars Naughty but nice?, 18 Feb. 2015

If you love corny old films then you will love this box-set of four, showing the ghastly St Trinians' girls at their worst!

Have these British comedies stood the test of time?

Definitely NOT but they are still fun so if you want a bumpy trip down memory lane then buy them now, pour yourself a frothy pint of best bitter and thrill to the sight of over-aged actresses in battered straw hats, black stockings and suspender belts beneath outrageously short gymslips cavorting about being obnoxious, dimly ruled over by Alistair Sims in drag!

Cool, eh?!

5.0 out of 5 stars Is this possibly the best book ever written about Napoleon?, 18 Feb. 2015
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: Napoleon the Great (Hardcover)
This is a major contribution to the history of Napoleon and the period in which he controlled most of Europe.

Robert's historical biography benefits enormously from the thousands of letters now available, written by Napoleon even in the midst of battle - revealing a workaholic genius capable of extraordinary feats of memory, attention to detail and creative lawmaking. Indeed, much of the 'Napoleonic Code' - as his legislation came to be known - is still in use today, and not just in France.

What it also reveals is why his army followed him so rapturously, not least because his prodigious memory allowed him to recall the names of men he had met in previous campaigns or details from their lives that endeared him to even the roughest soldier. His strategy in battle was second to none but Robert's clear admiration for this man does not stop him from meticulously identifying mistakes, not least those that led to Napoleon's defeat at Waterloo.

This, in short, is a magnificent work of scholarship but written with style and elegance. I read it from cover to cover over three days and could barely put it down throughout that time.

4.0 out of 5 stars Stand up the real Nigel Kennedy, 18 Feb. 2015
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: Recital (Audio CD)
Kennedy having fun but also showing off a bit, I suspect.

He can certainly play a range of musical styles and this CD shows that very well indeed. Jazz, classic Bach (Kennedy style) and inventive tributes to Fats Waller and Paul Desmond.

What worries me is that it's all too easy - this dropping in and out of style and dressing up classic Waller tracks with what some might argue were simply musical tricks or embellishments.

Perhaps I am being overly critical but nothing quite strikes me as genuine or, indeed, the authentic 'voice' of this hugely talented performer. Still, it's a great listen and if you thrill to virtuosity then Kennedy has it in buckets.

4.0 out of 5 stars Hauntingly beautiful love story, 18 Feb. 2015

This review is from: Elvira Madigan [1967] [DVD] (DVD)
Tragic love story of a young girl from a circus who falls in love with a dashing, young officer from the Danish army - who also turns out to be a count and married! If that were not enough, their elopement together turns to near starvation and eventual death by suicide..

This beautiful film only just stands the test of time for some of the shots we thrilled at years ago now seem (to me at least) contrived and overly 'arty' but the performances from both the young actors are heart-breakingly moving and the inevitable, calamitous ending loses none of its impact even though you can see it coming a mile off.

Curl up by a warm fire, have a box of tissues handy, and watch this hauntingly moving film with music by none other than Mozart and you will never listen to Mozart again without picturing the Danish countryside at its loveliest.

The Sultan's Admiral: Barbarossa - Pirate and Empire-builder
The Sultan's Admiral: Barbarossa - Pirate and Empire-builder
by Ernle Dusgate Selby Bradford
Edition: Paperback
Price: £11.99

4.0 out of 5 stars Shiver me timbers!, 18 Feb. 2015
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Good, solid account of one of Europe's more flamboyant characters - pirate, navigator, admiral of the Ottoman fleet in the early 16th Century and an all-round villain that even today thrills Turkish children who read books about this extraordinary man.

Bradford's historical account captures the excitement of sea battles in which most of the ships were propelled into battle by slaves chained to their oars for months on end. This is a dark, cruel world of exploitation, commerce and piracy but also full of thrills and spills and do-daring in true piratical fashion. It makes Jack Sparrow and his enemies look positively charming and benign!

In short, if you like marine history at its most bloodthirsty, then Barbaross is your man!
