3.0 out of 5 stars Surprisingly tedious, 23 Oct 2007
For a film described as the next "City of God", with equivalent amounts of mayhem and murder, this is a suprisingly tedious production. It's badly paced, the characters don't grip (except perhaps the two female leads) and the denoument is entirely predictable. The camera work is good and the plot is not without it's attractions, but if you're looking for a story of a good guy drawn inevitably into the temptations of the moral decay around him, "Amores Perros" is the better comparison and a much better film.

4.0 out of 5 stars A well-structured, quirky and very funny con movie with an emphasis on the characters, 19 Oct 2007
I really enjoyed this film. It's reminiscent of the Coen brothers visually and in the plotting - though with more emphasis on character development (particularly the lead) and less on the twists and turns. Mussolini's fascist new-towns of Latina and Sabaudia provide a great back-drop, even if the director is perhaps a little bit too far up his own backside at time.

(By the way, the interview with Sorrentino, the director, is also worth watching, for the outright abuse he hurls towards the lead actor, Giacomo Rizzo - a "very tiresome man" who, even after the film was over had no conception of the character he portrayed.)
