Utter nonsense. Please read your Bible instead.

Vivid recording and engineering. One of the finest versions of both works in recent years. Gardner is a talented Waltonian.

Derek Bell - The 'Violet Flame' Symphony & Other Works
Derek Bell - The 'Violet Flame' Symphony & Other Works
Price: £9.17

2.0 out of 5 stars Quite bizarre, 29 Jun 2014
Derek Bell was a master of Irish music in the Chieftains and an old friend. He was also a formally trained pianist and composer. Although an eclectic talent and a whizz on the piano, he wasn't a great composer. His unperformed Symphony No.1 won a prize at college; his Symphony No.2 isn't going to win any accolades but it's certainly interesting. A conventional romantic symphony, it suffers from being drenched in New Age Buddhist robes which just muddy the waters of what Derek was trying to convey. The orchestra (a minor regional Bulgarian band) is pretty shocking - badly undernourished and out of tune, but I guess they were the only folks prepared to lay down a tape of Derek's magnum opus. Recommended if you like the highways and byways of eccentric British 20th century works. The Variations are bonkers - using a Northern Irish TV theme jingle and a chunk of Schumann's Fourth as the theme - really very odd. The Bulgarian mystical fillers are simply nonsense.

5.0 out of 5 stars A superb new recording, 12 Feb 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Agree entirely with the other reviewer. I've known Sir Edward Downes' wonderful recording on Chandos for over 20 years and thought it could never be topped, but this certainly comes close if not quite better. Great sonics and a very lush, forward-moving approach to this much-neglected score. The second movement is full of Delian and Scriabinesque wonders. Highly recommended, especially if you are new to Gliere. He really was a wonderfully talented composer and sadly has been left behind in the mists of musical history.

5.0 out of 5 stars Hough, Brahms, perfection., 26 Nov 2013
Stephen Hough can't release anything below par. And this is certainly in the same line of quality pianism that his admirers expect. Deep, lustrous readings of two of the finest of all concertos with full-blooded accompaniment from the Salzburgers under Wigglesworth. Superb performances in pristine sound as usual from the Hyperion team. Five stars.

A superb traversal of the Brahms symphonies. The dark lustre of the Leipzigers coupled with the penetrating genius of Chailly is perfect. Excellent recording with dark burnished colours.

5.0 out of 5 stars Is this what the Kind-le was created for? I think it is..., 28 April 2013

This review is from: The Gig Delusion (Kindle Edition)
I read the Gig Delusion floating on my back in a hypersaline lake in the Middle East and laughed like a trumping loon. What more can a salty man say? A bit more, perhaps. This is top drawer stuff. Mr Kind constantly makes me smile like no other man alive. This may be partly due to his peculiar and endearing visage but it's likely more related to his charming rapier wit and his ability to construct a damn funny narrative with a very touching emotional tenor. Andy has a supreme ability to write funny words on paper in a way that engages the brain and heart simultaneously. As a follow-up to Stand Up and Deliver it hits the spot and more - a genuine talent and a man with a true gift for pure comedy without all the puerile filth that comes with the job.
The identity parade of characters is as rich and burlesque as Jabba the Hutt's throne room and the building tension towards the climax is kind of like 24. Kind of. Back of the net. Ten on ten. But it's QUI-GON Jinn. That's all.

5.0 out of 5 stars Sonically superb, 7 April 2012

Simply the best recorded Planets ever. Sonically outstanding, magnificently played. Dutoit conjures his usual magic from the Montreal Symphony as ever.
