Best Seat in the House: The Wit and Parliamentary Chronicles of Frank Johnson
Best Seat in the House: The Wit and Parliamentary Chronicles of Frank Johnson
by Frank Johnson
Edition: Hardcover

5.0 out of 5 stars Hilarious collection of parliamentary sketches, 25 April 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Mostly funny, sometimes hysterical collection of observations of a journalist watching the daily machinations in the house, Frank Johnson brought all the MP's down to earth cutting through the pomposity, posturing and pretentiousness without a trace of vicious sniping. In fact many of the politicians lampooned (Prescott, Tebbit, Skinner, etc.) in the book comment throughout how warmly they regarded the man it being something of almost an honour to be the object of his wit. Thoroughly recommend but if buying please check the last chapter as in my copy this consisted of entirely blank pages!

2.0 out of 5 stars Not worth the wait., 10 Jan 2014

After waiting an absolute age for this connector I am disappointed that on first use the plastic fascia surrounding the socket came loose along with the circuit board inside. The vga plug's screws would not then engage with the nuts in the connector. After fiddling about and holding things together manually there was a picture of sorts from the xbox but no sound. I had thought the monitor's built-in speakers would have come into play but after reading some online posts I appreciate this was a bit misplaced. Now having to seek a better alternative, so all in all a poor transaction.

5.0 out of 5 stars Toolbox fit for purpose., 8 Dec 2013

Bought for my early-teenage grandson, this multi-compartment was exactly what he needed to keep the various tools for bike maintenance etc. that he had started to accumulate. It replaced a smaller cheap one that had cracked and was not "up to the job" which this one obviously is. Not massive, but more than adequate for a basic set of tools, while remaining portable.

5.0 out of 5 stars Ideal for metal detecting, 8 Dec 2013

The shovel is brilliant for the price -- ideal size, i.e. not too big or heavy for lugging around the countryside yet has proved strong enough for the rigours of unearthing finds from tough ground. Cannot fault it so far.

When it came the hanger was found to be the opposite way round to that shown in the picture so could not be fitted. If it had been the correct one it would have been fine as it proved when I got the same thing from a local shop at a very comparable price. I could have done without the hassle of returning the item but in all fairness this was done and refunded smoothly with no quibble so full marks for that at least.

3.0 out of 5 stars Light and amusing anecdotes, 2 Aug 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Interesting and funny to a degree, this is another series of anecdotes that are no doubt the true recollections of this author.
The drawback I find with all these kinds of "confessions" though is that it is hard to escape the notion that some of the events could have been embellished or made up -- we have no way of knowing unless the people named corroborate them. Consequently while reading it I can't help thinking that this is quite an easy way to write an "entertaining" book. As long as it keeps to trivia and no-one is libelled, you can sprinkle the stories with as many celebrities you like -- they probably would not remember anyway!

Landscape with Dead Dons
Landscape with Dead Dons
by Robert Robinson
Edition: Paperback

5.0 out of 5 stars Well worth the effort, 21 Jun 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
As a massive Robert Robinson fan I loved this earlier work of his. Slowish to start, the book soon rewards perseverance as his absolute mastery of the well wrought sentence shines through, with not a word wasted and full of humour. The plot is sprinkled with characters whose names ironically reflect their personality / role, for example "Bow-Parley" for the Chaplain of whom he writes pricelessly:
'In conversation it always seemed as if the Rev. Cyprian Bow-Parley were using his hands as antenna, as sensitive apparatus whereby he might put himself in touch with corporeality. He would clamp his hand on the arm of the person he addressed as if apprehension that the slightest break in contact might involve instant sublimation of Bow-Parley-on-Earth, and a reappearance (crystalline and ethereal) somewhere in the region of the ceiling.'
For me it was altogether a brilliant and enjoyable read but being a fan of the author always helps I suppose.

The Hundred-Year-Old Man Who Climbed Out of the Window and Disappeared
The Hundred-Year-Old Man Who Climbed Out of the Window and Disappeared
Price: 2.99

4.0 out of 5 stars Ridiculous entertaining fantasy!, 14 May 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This struck me as the sort of wild yarn you might be spun by some ripe old lad whom you had the luck to sit next to in the pub. He knows you are going to lend a kindly ear to such an ancient codger so does not hold back as he unfolds his unlikely adventures that seem more like wishful thinking for the exciting life he would have liked to have lived. In the main tale the old boy has escaped with some athleticism from the care home in which he lives, to avoid a ghastly 100th birthday party in his honour, then embarks on a series of wild escapades in the company of some disparate characters he meets along the way. Interlaced with this is another story about his past life comprising far-fetched chapters involving some of the most famous and infamous leaders of our time. In fact this could have made a separate book. Forget about believing any of it - just enjoy it!

5.0 out of 5 stars Brilliant starter detector!, 2 May 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Bought this metal detector for my grandson who had been disappointed with another he got from an auction website a couple of years ago because basically it did not work and went through batteries in no time flat (no pun intended!). What a contrast! This one has proved an immediate success in finding small coins under our back lawn including a minute old decimal half pence some 6-7 inches down. The crowning find so far though was a gold ring our daughter lost in the grass some 20 years ago and which had sunk about 6 inches down. Apart from the lawn's now resembling the aftermath of the D-day landings we are thrilled with this purchase not least because it keeps the lad off his X-Box for several hours at a time!
