5.0 out of 5 stars A Great Boxed Set From a Great Record Company, 4 Jun. 2015
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
As a collector of Blue Note Records for over 60 years I have always admired the recording quality and artwork. What Blue Note has done for Jazz will go down in History. A Great Boxed set that links to the celebratory book of the same name. Of course there are overlaps from the original records but it is important to have collections like these to add to ones own historical collection. I would love to know what is still hidden the vaults of many record companies.

I must add it is nice to see a quality presentation of a boxed set, compared with many of the current re-issue set that are flooding the market with little editorial. You don't buy a Rolls Royce and fit Ford Hub Caps. That's what is nice about record companies such as Blue Note and Impulse !

5.0 out of 5 stars A Must For All Dedicate Jazz Collectors, 9 Dec. 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
There are 'Jazz Books' that stand out above all others and this has to be on a par with the late William Claxton's 'Jazz Life.'

I have most of the records mentioned in this book and have been lucky to see and meet many of the musicians. (Shows my age)!

How well I remember going into Dobell's Jazz Record Shop in London (sadly long gone) browsing the racks for new Blue Note issues. The bug hit because of the excellent sound quality recorded by Rudy Van Gelder. My record collection grew highlighted by the brilliant cover design, liner notes and photography.

Of course there was competition. Impulse, Prestige, Riverside - it was an era of 'Jazz Greats' and some amazing Jazz Record Labels. Blue Note was just that bit different.

Now the Book. One simple statement.. "It is a MUST for every Jazz Record Collectors shelf. The artwork, photographs ,historical facts and words by Richard Havers cover every aspect of the Blue Note history. It is a book that one can pick up and open on any page and take a step back in time from the first line.

Put on your favourite Blue Note album and pick up this book. You will find things not mentioned on the Liner Notes.

Those that remember this label can now hope that future generations will follow suit and hunt out the CD Reissues of many. Best make sure they are the 'Blue Note' ones though. Many of the musicians have now gone over The Rainbow Bridge to join the Biggest Band in the Sky.

Thank you Blue Note for all you did!

5.0 out of 5 stars A Must For Every Coltrane Collector, 9 Oct. 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Having seen Trane and Pharaoh live several times and the latter at the now long gone 'Slugs' in New York any new release containing both was top of the list. Wow! Was it worth the wait. I have all of Trane's Recordings and to find this rarity is a real bonus for all. Sometimes the Jazz world comes up with some masters, and this has to be top of the list for 2014. It should make Record of the year in many publications.
To go into detail about its content would take a lot of words - 'My Favourite Things' yet again shows just how he can create a different version every time he plays this tune. There is so much to be listened too on this double CD set and the recording quality is excellent as well as the cover artwork creating the 'Impulse' feel to the packaging.
My large Jazz collection will benefit by having this added to it. I am now very selective as to what I purchase - with so many re-issues around. Nice to see a new original back on the shelves. Go out and buy now !!

Signalman Jones: Based on the Recollections of Geoffrey Holder-Jones
Signalman Jones: Based on the Recollections of Geoffrey Holder-Jones
by Tim Parker
Edition: Paperback

5.0 out of 5 stars Signalman Jones, 11 April 2013
I met Tim personaly for the first time several weeks ago. He is a respected local writer with many features published in some of the Regions Magazines. Being involved in the Nautical Media myself I found 'Signalman Jones' to be a realy enjoyable read about one of the unsung heros of the 2nd World War. Many gave their lives but Tim has managed to make this book an interesting and enjoyable read . Stongly recommend it and hope it wont be too long before he writes his second book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Worth The Wait, 4 Jun. 2012
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Having seen the Devils at the cinema when it first came out and have always been a great admirer of the work of the late 'Ken Russell' to get it at last on DVD has been well worth the long wait. Had Ken been alive he I know would have liked to have seen the fully restored version and I hope one day we all will. In the meantime this is worth a 5 star rating not only for the film but for the bonus DVD with interviews and comments. I rate this film as one of the best made and it certainly was the best Ken did. The acting is excellent, the photography brilliant and the music enhances the whole film.

I have been waiting for 'Singleton Pluck' to be released on DVD and what a delight it is to see again. I lived in Norfolk and Suffolk and know the area well so it bought back many memories for me. It is a moving story with some excellent acting and the direction by Richard Eyre adds a real feel of what it was like at the time. The landscapes and the bleak Norfolk mornings come over well. It is one of those productions when television came up trumps with some real quality. A must for any DVD Collection giving the viewer a chance to see a filmed production that does not need any of the gimmicks so many films use now.

Hours and hours of great listening to 'Tubs' over many years and most of that at Ronnie Scotts. What a player and I am so glad this CD has followed so soon after the first one 'Lament'. The recording quality is excellent...sounds like it was recorded on a Ferrograph Reel to Reel - I still have two in mint condition - oh valves! Add to that the linear notes in a 14 page booklet and you have a real gem. What a line up Jimmy Deuchar, Terry Shannon, Freddy Logan and Allan Ganley. Tubs plays the works on Tenor and Vibes and this recording was just a few days before he stepped into the Ellington Band for his historical session with them. Simon Spillets book due out soon called 'The Long Shadow Of The Little Giant' will be a fitting tribute to Tubby Hayes. I know there are more recordings to be released in this series. The packaging is great - the music and the words are the icing on the cake....get them both now...and keep your eyes out for more to come. Oh yes these recordings are from his own private tape archive - for Tubs to have kept them he must have liked them!

5.0 out of 5 stars Brilliant - but re-issues worry me, 1 Nov. 2011
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Sonny Stitt came to my attention when he visited the UK in the Mid 60's and I purchased his first album on Impulse. Since then I have collected many of his recordings and this is an excellent example of his quality as a player. The price of these cds means your money is well spent and it is giving one the opportunity to collect many missing masters that are no longer around unless one browses the second hand Jazz shop (sadly in decline). The recording quality is good and has stood the test of time.

My major concern is the on going re-issue market at the moment with so many cds flooding into the market place. I assume due to copyright being lifted. Please listen first to many of the re-issues as some offer very bad sound quality and I have returned them to the place of purchase as a result. This current series seems fine and I have purchased several that I had missing from my collection. It is giving the younger collectors a chance to build up their collections at an economical price.

5.0 out of 5 stars This was my first Stereo Record, 1 Nov. 2011
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
How nice to see this reissue. This was my first Stereo Record (1 LP) along with Ornette Colemans 'Change of the Century' - hows that for a broad spectrum? I was 17 at the time and both have stayed stalwarts in my large collection of Jazz over many years. Why this CD? Simple! its sound quality and lots of vocals. When the LP came out the cover was something new hard card with a wonderful image. Who said covers don't sell records...of course they do more so in those days. Look at the Blue Note and Impulse ones. I digress! Go out and buy it -you wont be dissapointed - a quality band that was not around too long with the bonus of Louis at his best. In those days I purchased one of the first Quad Amplifier systems - need I say more - quality mixed with quality produced a brilliant combination. Even better hearing it through a valve system. Welcome back Louis.

5.0 out of 5 stars Stan Has Done It Again, 1 Nov. 2011
I just don't know how Stan Manages it. Such quality and a realy great CD. He seems to improve with age (excuse the pun!) I have listened to Stan now for almost 55 years and his energy is still there backed by the excellent Simon Allen on Tenor, Andy Cleyndert on Bass and Clark Tracey on drums. Such fond memories of 'Under Milk Wood' Stan has come up trumps with yet another Dylan masterpiece and supportive narration by Ben Tracey. Long may he continue as one of the surviving masters of British Jazz that came from one of the eras that produced some of the best players! A MUST FOR ANY JAZZ RECORD COLLECTION.
