5.0 out of 5 stars The Return of Roxette, 5 Jun. 2016

Each Roxette album sounds unique. Be it the synth pop of 1988's Look Sharp, the crashing guitars of Crash! Boom! Bang! from 1994 or the EDM beats of Good Karma. Yes. Roxette has gone EDM. Well, sort of.

Gone are the twangy guitars and soft vocals of 2012's hippy throwback Travelling. Also gone is the rulebook.

Good Karma kicks off in traditional Roxette style with a Per Gessle led guitar based pop song. Why Dontcha is pretty straight forward. Took a few listens to really get it, but once it sticks in your head it's hard to remove.

It Just Happens just happened to be the first single from the album, another traditional Roxette song, the power ballad is back for 2016 and it bounces along pleasantly. The chord changes are unexpected, the harmonies are spot on and and the lyrics are totally Per Gessle.

Good Karma, the title track and probably one of the best songs that Roxette have recorded. Starts with a gentle piano, not dissimilar to 1991's Fading Like A Flower before a guitar kicks in and throws it into Listen To Your Heart territory. Then the beats come in linking it to Stars (1999's Have A Nice Day). The vocal is powerful even with the filter effects running through. One of the best songs on the album.

This One takes over from Good Karma in the EDM category. Loud, fast and powerful. This stomps along and sticks into your brain. Another for the list of best Roxette tracks.

You Make It Sound So Simple is anything but. A haunting opening followed by an even more haunting vocal arrangement make this one of the most unusual tracks on the album and indeed one of the most rulebook ripping up songs in their career. It's fantastic even if it is weird.

From A Distance sounds as if if it wants to speed up and burst into a huge chorus. It doesn't. But this is no bad thing. Brilliant vocals from Marie Fredriksson surrounded by an amazing backing. It's gentle but powerful. Yet another for the list of best Roxette songs.

Some Other Summer is my personal favourite on the album. It's slightly dancey, slightly rocky, slightly cheesy and massively catchy. The perfect song for the Summer.

Why Don't You Bring Me Flowers. Here it is. The Marie does a ballad by herself track, typical of each Roxette album. It could have been recorded in 1988, 1991, 1999. It sounds timeless. It is however my least favourite on the album as it comes in between and interrupts the stomping beats in the same way as Watercolours In The Rain on Joyride (1991) or Cry on Look Sharp (1988). It's a good song and Marie sounds in good form.

You Can't Do This To Me Anymore is like a cousin to You Make It Sound So Simple. A strange arrangement, weird vocals and weirder lyrics. Per Gessle gets rapping like Neil Tennant and the whole thing sounds like they bumped into The Pet Shop Boys and The Human League on a night out. Fantastic.

I originally thought that 20 BPM was going to be the love it or hate it track of the album a la Make My Head Go Pop from 2001's Room Service or 7Twenty7 from Have A Nice Day. Thankfully I was wrong, for now at least, I'll review it again in 15 years. It punches you in the face and makes your ears bleed but in a positive way. This kind of thing works on an album like Good Karma.

April Clouds is another Marie ballad. This is an understated Roxette classic. Each album closer has always been a ballad and this is welcomed into the club with open arms. Marie delivers a superb vocal performance. You feel she means what she sings, especially in the closing line. Perfect ending.

Good Karma is at first listen a shock to the system. It's pop/rock/synth/EDM tendencies throw you from 2016 to 1986 and back again with no apologies. They've changed their sound and this is Roxette in 2016 as Per Gessle boldly states in This One. This is a band who have found their unique weirdness again. Changing sounds while still sounding the same. It's instantly Roxette while sounding like nothing they've done before. It seems as if this could be the final Roxette album. After listening to it several times I sincerely hope it isn't.

5.0 out of 5 stars Why No Fireworks?, 4 Sept. 2015
An absolutely fantastic 4 disc set and at a brilliant price. This set features practically every Roxette hit, plus a whole load of their best album tracks and some outtakes and b-sides.

My only complaint is that yet again, despite almost every Roxette hit single being included, this set misses just one. Fireworks. It has been missing from every Roxette compilation album and this was a golden opportunity to light the fuse and watch it explode.

5.0 out of 5 stars Make It Sunny On A Rainy Saturday, 3 Sept. 2015
This review is from: The 30 Biggest Hits XXX (Audio CD)
This is easily the best Roxette compilation since 1995's Don't Bore Us! Get To The Chorus!

It kicks off with their first international hit single The Look and it's pretty much a pop fest from there on in.

Each song has stood the test of time, singles such as How Do You Do! Almost Unreal, Fading Like A Flower and the hugely underrated Run To You still sound as excellent in 2015 as they did in the early 90's.

The double disc set collects nearly all of Roxette's international hit singles, there are a couple missing, Church Of Your Heart and 1994's Fireworks. Both tracks could have took the place of non singles Perfect Day and (Do You Get) Excited? Especially seeing as Fireworks has never been included on a compilation, despite being a bigger hit than some included. But that is my only complaint.

For anyone who likes Roxette at their power ballad best or admires their power pop stomp, this album isn't a bad investment at all.

5.0 out of 5 stars Belinda's Brilliant Box, 3 Sept. 2015
This review is from: CD Singles 1986 - 2014 (Audio CD)
This is a fantastic box set. Almost an over the top Greatest Hits album. The price is slightly high on Amazon, but you do get quite a lot on here.

A nice touch is the inclusion of the artwork, rather than generic plain cards inside.

The inclusion of remixes and original B-sides is very much welcome. Better than trawling eBay for each individual single at any rate.

While it is brilliant to have In My Wildest Dreams included, there have been suggestions that it is took directly from YouTube. This is probably half true. The same file was more than likely sent to the label, rather than them using YouTube as a direct source. As many fans have been longing for it to turn up one day it is good that they have managed to clean up and slightly enhance the poor quality presented in the YouTube version, the sound is now stable and consistant without fluctuations. Considering that the master tapes have never been found and probably never will be, this is he next best thing. It would have been a better option to have put it on this set as a nice extra and also release it as an individual track for download.

4.0 out of 5 stars Takes getting used to but turned out to be a decent plug for the bath, 23 July 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Bought this a while ago to replace a 20 year old Jilton plug. At first it was awful and I wrote a scathing review. Now however it is actually a good plug, no water loss at all.

It took a few tries, but if using as a bath plug, run the tap for a minute, put the plug in the water (just away from the plug hole) and slide over the plug hole and press gently. I found that if you put it in before turning on the tap it is pretty bad at retaining water, but since I started putting it in while there was a bit of water already in the bath it has worked perfectly.

5.0 out of 5 stars Brilliant Comeback, 16 Feb. 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
After leaving the television just over 15 years ago Birds of a Feather had a big challenge to retain the integrity of the original 9 series and to win back old fans and new viewers. Thankfully it has succeeded where so many fail.

The first episode does feel slightly 'staged' as it sets up the scene and re-introduces the three main characters, but once it gets over the awkwardness it feels as though they have never been away.

The whole feel of the series in 2014 is remarkably similar to the 9 that went before it. They have retained the location shots (something that a lot of newer studio sitcoms lack) that featured originally which helps make the whole thing feel more real and natural. The script is as sharp and funny as it always was.

At the time of writing 7 of the 8 episodes have aired and not one of them has been a dud, this has been a huge hit and I hope that a series 11 is on the way.

Some things should be left in the 1990's, but occasionally something actually works. Along with Absolutely Fabulous and Still Open All Hours, Birds of a Feather can take it's rightful place in the successful list of comebacks without damaging it's reputation.

5.0 out of 5 stars Surprising, 16 Feb. 2014
This review is from: Wanderlust (MP3 Download)
I hadn't heard a single track off this, went into a store buy something else which was out of stock and took a punt on this as I had heard good things, played it twice over at once.

It is definitely an album that will grow and grow on me the more I listen to it. A complete change from her previous material and more in common with her album with theaudience.

What a great album.
