5.0 out of 5 stars a detective family drama - hooked, 26 Jun. 2016

The title suggested a horror film but no. The opening suggested a comedy thriller. It went on to be a well charactered family drama / political drama. Then throw in a serial killer and you have an involving story which hooks you in. No corpses. No scary bits ( yet) Just a good solid acting performance from all concerned. A developing tension sucks you in lightened by a touch of comic relief. Is one of them the killer? The detective story begins.
I'm hooked.

After the disappointing "Interestings this was refreshing. The 1930's feel is caught to perfection The atmosphere wonderufl. The plot a film about the making of a film under the shadow of Nazi Germany is well played out, The acting is excellent. Perhaps the streets and those living there could have been dirtier. But I nitpick. The drama is well paced, subtle and powerful. Well done Amazon you hit the bull's eye with this one.

This is one of those " let's learn something about life " films. It was OK. The acting was good though it was all a bit underplayed. The photography and direction were good .But. The script ? Nothing really happened . It was all a bit downbeat but bland. Maybe it's not my sort of film. Maybe it's because it is a pilot which means it has to prepare the way for a series and as a result the story loses focus and goes nowhere. I feel his may have worked better as a one-off drama. If this is to get me to watch the series it needs a pick me up ; an injection of energy.
If not.........

Ripper Street for the Americans. It lacks the grit and honesty of the former. The acting doesn't stand up to the comparison either. I am deeply uncomfortable at Copper using a child prostitute to murder a man in cold blood. Even in those days I am sure any decent man would pull back from this. This is shock for shocks sake rather than character developement or historical accuracy. It is weak and uninvolving. Ripper street relies on characterisation and intense acting. This doesn't cut the mustard. This was dropped while the other goes from strength to strenght. Says it all

5.0 out of 5 stars An enjoyable romp., 12 Jun. 2016

Facts are few and far between so the makers of this film have licence for an an ( inferred ) Arthurian tale complete with sword which isn't ( or is it ? ) Excalibur . It works well . The cast of so many leading English actors.and a very sexy martial arts expert.make for an enjoyable romp
( not to mention a great villain and a good child star ). Great for playing " Where have I seen him before".
Family entertainment decrees no matter how many people are killed there is no blood anywhere. And , of course no sex just a sensual gaze into the eyes.
Lots of fighting and charging about - even a heroic " once more into the breach " speech by Colin Firth. Great fun. Enjoy with the family - though perhaps not the very young. And the end will make you cheer.

All the elements are there and it should be a good film but there is no scare and no real tension. I think this is to do with the sound. The music is disembodied and detached from the action. The actors say their lines but they don't feel as if they are talking to each other. The attempts to scare you by deafening crash bang wallops are just annoying.. It all detracts from any sense of atmosphere. Too disjointed. Badly edited.
A shame because the acting is good. The effects are good. The intentions were good. In different hands..... ?

This book is really good. Like Cloud Atlas there are different story lines - the title character in London hiding from something running away from something. An American story and two Russian story lines and a really nasty villain. This is about politics about terror, about Russian ruthlessness.
The different stories developed and you have no idea how or even whether they will connect until well into the book. Not a who funniest. The question is why. The tension mounts as the stories build. A detective story. A getaway story. A ruthless assassin out to destroy all evidence of .... what ? You cannot be sure who will or will not survive.
If this all sounds a bit vague that is because I don't want to give too much away while giving a flavour of the book.
It also contains what may be an attempt on the world record for the longest sentence - one whole chapter - which is brilliantly constructed.
To me this is such a wonderful read and is highly recommended.

This is a show which says anything goes to catch the villain including torture. That in itself is disturbing . The min chaacater is so wooden . Perhaps the decent actors wouldn't touch it and I wouldn't blame them . Drastic measures under pressure is one thing but this says violence is the easy way out. Pity because I can see the potential.

5.0 out of 5 stars a little gem, 31 May 2016

I was wary of watching this as I find so much US output patronising but I have really taken to the blend of serious, thought provoking documentary and more light - hearted human interest stories. This is a little gem.
