St. Anger First Review, 5 Jun 2003
Well i have just bought St. Anger and really didn't know what to expect of the album. First track really enters the album well, and the new sound is daunting at first, but after a few minutes its just like natural. Every track is superbly composed and recorded and in my opinion this is a very good move forwards for Metallica.
It is much more a moshing kind of album, and you really get your head nodding with some of the tracks, so far after about 5 listens i think that Frantic and Some Kind of Monster shine out on the album for sheer riffage, but EVERY track is worthy of credit.
My only qualm of the album is we seem to have lost Kirk's amazing solos, and this almost lets the album down a bit, we are all used to hearing lightning fast solos from Kirk's fingers, and that is missing here. Again a new sound for the drums on the album, again strange at first but the whole album works so well together that it just seems natural.
Overall this is a wonderful progression for Metallica's music, and anyone who has a word against this step I say to you, you be on the top of your genre of music for over 20 years, and you see how hard it is to come up with a new sound that works, but still sounds like your music. Metallica have done that, and for that, i commend them all. A must have for ANY metallica fan, or any fan of heavy metal. BUY IT NOW.
(The free DVD also is superb, a wonderful live performance from the studios, another great addition that just adds to the superbness of this album)
