Sony MDRZX300R Fashionable Monitor Style Headphones - Red
Sony MDRZX300R Fashionable Monitor Style Headphones - Red
Price: 15.00

4.0 out of 5 stars very good for the money, 2 Mar 2013
Have just bought these and not disappointed. But, but........

They are certainly decent value for the money: compared to some 25 skull candies I would rather have these - and believe me, I have compared. The sound is detailed, sharp with strong treble and good stereo separation. You can certainly spot all the different lines in the music, and there is no nasty over-egged bass, which remains tight and balanced.

But for some the sound may be rather cold. I also have the Sony MDR570LPD Fashionable Headphones with Quality Sound - Orange headphones at a similar price and the latter give a much more rounded, warmer and fuller sound. This is very noticeable when using the 'phones with an electric piano, which can sound a bit tinny with the MDR-ZX300 s. Solo piano music can suffer the same fate. Depends what you what them for. Well produced pop sounds great on these.

The lead is a bit thicker than other makes, and they seem robust. I have never been disappointed by any Sony 'phones and these are no exception. Good value.

4.0 out of 5 stars Quirky, 9 July 2012
OK, for the price, but don't expect the best quality sound. I found them bass-heavy and lacking detail in the mid and treble. But applaud the philosophy - and the design is great fun. None of your usual plasticy plastic. The lead actually has texture! And you get a cute drawstring bag. Something a bit different in a world of black, white or neon.

5.0 out of 5 stars decent value, 9 July 2012
These compare favourably with the competition at this price. Minimalist looking, they seem robust, but time will tell. Yes, the lead is short and you get no in-lead volume control, but the sound is pretty balanced and detailed for the price. External noise is kept surprisingly low considering the design, but you could consider in-ear designs to really cut out the outside world.

Definitely worth considering for the 20-30 bracket.

5.0 out of 5 stars armour plating for your phone, 10 Aug 2011
This case strikes a good balance between protecting the phone and allowing access to the buttons. Volume switch and ON/OFF button are still responsive, as is the screen under its protector, while sockets are all accessible with the case on. Yet the level of protection on offer is impressive. You can tell some thought has gone into the design of this product and although not the cheapest case on the market, is worth it in my opinion for the protection it offers.

Surface Detail (Culture Novels)
Surface Detail (Culture Novels)
by Iain M. Banks
Edition: Paperback
Price: 6.29

4.0 out of 5 stars Great fun, 9 Aug 2011
This was a return to form for Banks after the rather less successful 'Matter'. You don't get innovation, but you do get classic Banks. Interlocking stories, pace increasing at the end, threads coming together, a few twists, fancy tech, some interesting ideas about death.

Could've been edited down a bit, but still a good read.

Global Warming: A Very Short Introduction (Very Short Introductions)
Global Warming: A Very Short Introduction (Very Short Introductions)

5.0 out of 5 stars readable and largely balanced, 9 Aug 2011
This is one of the better ' Very short introductions' being both readable and authoritative. The author covers the causes, effects and solutions to global warming, addressing sceptics' arguments. The prose is accessible, and generally explains technical arguments lucidly. One small gripe is that the graphs sometimes contain too much information and things like 'ppmv' are insufficiently explained. Nonetheless, does what it says on the tin very well, highly recommended.

Chaos: A Very Short Introduction (Very Short Introductions)
Chaos: A Very Short Introduction (Very Short Introductions)
by Leonard Smith
Edition: Paperback
Price: 5.59

3.0 out of 5 stars patchy, 9 Aug 2011
You will get more from this book if you have a background in scientific / mathematical / technical subjects. Although equations are largely absent, the ideas are often subtle and too much preparatory explanation is omitted in the interests of brevity to make it really accessible to a wide range of readers. There are some important emphases, such as between the mathematical theory, a computer model and real data, plus you get a glossary. Yet many ideas are introduced in the blink of an eye, such as attractors and binary counting, and the prose needed more careful editing to make it really accessible.

If you already know some ideas about chaos, it'll introduce a few more, but if not, I'd suggest Chaos: Making a New Scienceor Does God Play Dice?: The New Mathematics of Chaos (Penguin Mathematics)as better alternatives.

4.0 out of 5 stars A visual feast, 19 Jun 2011
This review is from: Tron Legacy [DVD] (DVD)
Get this one for the spectacle. The design is fantastic, the soundtrack epic, the action intense. I have just watched it for the third time and kept finding new things I hadn't noticed before. Some stunning stills - just watch for how many shots are framed for symmetry, reflecting the idea of perfection that runs through the story. The plot, if anything is the weakest link. It's not extremely bad, just feels imbalanced at times and some characters are 2-dimensional. Nonetheless, recommended.

The Left Hand Of Darkness
The Left Hand Of Darkness
by Ursula K. Le Guin
Edition: Paperback
Price: 5.59

5.0 out of 5 stars Deserved classic, 12 Jun 2011
This book is often cited as one of Le Guin's best works, and it didn't disappoint. The book has so many themes and layers all crammed into a relatively short page count it should be ( and probably is ) a set text for students of literature. To name but five....

1. A tale of personal friendship
2. An exploration of the different ways human society may be organised and the merits of each.
3. A tale of triumph through adversity.
4. An exploration of the machinations of government and leadership.
5. An exploration of gender roles.

Le Guin uses the device of an ambassador visiting an early-stage civilisation to put a lens to human society. She asks questions about the way humans conduct their business, the nature of authority, and the value of personal relationships. There is an economy to the writing, with more ideas packed into a few pages than some authors manage in several chapters. Everything is perfectly judged and the action moves forward at a pace. The narrative voice switches now and again and few fairy-like tales are in there, but these complement the main thrust of the story.

If you want something to get you thinking as well as a story with emotional impact, then this comes highly recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars An orchestro-synth power chord extravaganza, 12 Jun 2011
This review is from: Tron: Legacy (MP3 Download)
This is a powerful blend of mainly string and brass orchestral textures with some classic electro sounds. And it works. Repeated figures pound out over fairly traditional power chords, often building to a strong climax before fading to nothing. But there are quieter more contemplative moments as well ( Nocturne, Solar Sailor ), all put together with attention to detail and keeping the right side of an over-egged pudding. Many pieces help reflect a rather melancholy nostalgic atmosphere present in the film while others simply go all out for power and drive. Well worth it.
