1.0 out of 5 stars 2 pin plug that went bang!, 18 Mar 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Why can't it come with a uk 3 pin plug? It is a charger not something you'd use in a bathroom shaver socket! I plugged it into an adaptor and then into a UK socket and it went bang. My adaptor wasn't a transformer. It was just a straight adaptor. The device's plug says it is rated for 240v. So i can only assume it is faulty.

1.0 out of 5 stars Logitech HD Webcams still don't work properly with Skype, 8 Nov 2011
When using Skype the video aspect ratio changes and the video freezes. You can't manually set this to prevent problems. Even with the new version Skype!

4.0 out of 5 stars Ukulele For Dummies - Great Beginner Book, 8 July 2011
This review is from: Ukulele For Dummies (Paperback)
Like most people who pre-ordered this, I knew of the authors work on his website.

Style
Easy going and fun

Content:
Massive! There are a lot of songs and techniques in here with nearly 100 audio files to back it up.

Level:
I think a complete beginner would find it very helpful. I've been playing for nearly a year and it is very helpful for me too. There are several techniques and songs I want to master. Romanza is an example of something that is simple but very effective. So I think I'll be breaking the book down into many small projects and randomly trying stuff out. The book explains things very simply for all levels.

Accuracy:
Only 1 small but obvious typing mistake. Page 108 Figure 6-29 label says Bdim but the chord is clearly Cdim.

Missing:
Perhaps I'm being too picky but I would have liked to have seen a clear concise section on basic chord theory, how they're made up, chords in a key, circle of fifths. I had to work this out myself with hours of research when I started. Most uke players don't want to read a book on music theory but like the basics.

What I like:
Overviews of different styles and strums.
Some of the songs you can work on with help from the audio files
It is well suited to a wide range of levels

Verdict:
Awesome. It is a must have for any uke player. I can't think of anyone else more suited to write the book and Alistair Wood certainly delivered.

1.0 out of 5 stars Seems to have an irritant, 16 Mar 2011
The strap is just what I want except that it seems to make my nose and throat dry up. There seems to be an irritant on this.
Researching this I found that several chemicals used in tanning cause this problem. I wonder if this is the problem I have here?

ACETALDEHYDE

- Studies have shown that acetaldehyde causes cancer in animals, and may cause cancer in humans.
- Small amounts of acetaldehyde irritate the eyes, skin, and respiratory tract of humans and animals.
- Animal studies in which pregnant rats were exposed to acetaldehyde found that acetaldehyde interfered with the exchange of nutrients from the mother to the placenta, resulting in growth retardation, malformation, delayed bone growth and death of the fetus.
- Acetaldehyde may increase the absorption of the other hazardous chemicals in tobacco smoke into the bronchial tubes.
- The main industrial uses of acetaldehyde include silvering of mirrors, leather tanning, fuel, glue, dyes, plastics and synthetic rubbers.
- Acetaldehyde decomposition products include carbon monoxide.

Also Hydrogen Chloride is used in tanning:

Hydrogen chloride has many industrial uses such as tanning leather and refining soap as well as for making fertilizers, artificial silk, dyes and pigments for paint. It is also used in
the photographic, textile and rubber industry. The harmful effects that may occur from hydrogen chloride largely depend on how much people have been exposed to and for how long. Breathing in hydrogen chloride for a short time is irritating to the nose, throat and wind pipe. Suffocation may occur at high concentrations. Drinking solutions of concentrated hydrochloric acid causes burns to the lips, mouth, throat and stomach. Hydrogen chloride gas is not absorbed through the skin but when it comes into contact with moisture, it forms hydrochloricacid which cases irritation and burns.

4.0 out of 5 stars Not Bad - Couple of things to bear in mind, 8 Dec 2010
I didn't realise that the website Ukulele Hunt did a review on this book. So that is worth reading and it lists the songs there too.

The CD is good - Is is an audio CD that I have ripped to my mp3 player which is handy.

The book seems to have some good hawaiian and non hawaiian songs.

It is risky trying to find decent Ukulele books. Some are just rubbish attempts but this book seems quite useful and good for what it is and for what it claims to be.

Overall - Quite Good.

2.0 out of 5 stars Not worth it, 5 July 2010
This review is from: The Little Stranger (Hardcover)
We chose this in our office book club and were all in agreement that we chose the wrong the book. It appears to have got some publicity and good comments which is annoying and misleading. I didn't hate it. It was just slow to unfold and the end was dull.
