Britain Against Napoleon: The Organization of Victory, 1793-1815
Britain Against Napoleon: The Organization of Victory, 1793-1815
by Roger Knight
Edition: Paperback

3.0 out of 5 stars Detailed factual study, 20 April 2016

This is a very serious and detailed study of the politics of the Napoleonic era in Britain. It is especially valuable for its coverage of the logigistics of the period : how to keep the army and the navy equipped and supplied. Particularly eye-opening is the explanation and mapping of the two wartime innovations : the coastal line of Martello towers and the lines of telegraph / semaphore towers both in England and France. Communications from the front to the Admiralty and War Office were revolutionised. The densely packed book is not an easy read, but it rewards the persevering student.

Surrealism (The World's Greatest Art)
Surrealism (The World's Greatest Art)
by Michael Robinson
Edition: Paperback

4.0 out of 5 stars Be disconcerted and informed, 4 Jan. 2016
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
In 383 pages, this book offers a comprehensive coverage of the artwork of the Surrealists. Facing each square page with its illustration, an analysis of that illustration supplies relevant details about the work and its artist, as well as suggestions about the likely interpretation of the image. The colour rendering looks accurate and brilliant. The text, however, gives no indication of the size of the original. So Picasso's "Guernica", really 24 feet long, appears here in a 6 inch reduction ! As well as the best known artists and their major paintings, the book includes the work of many lesser Surrealists. All in all, a valuable resource for the study of Surrealism.

This review is from: FRANCESCO GUARDI (Hardcover)
This book in its Italian text gives a good overview of Guardi's life and work. It is not exhaustive since Guardi was too prolific and painted numerous versions of the same subject. Many illustrations, but only 12 in colour. Oddly, there seem to be rather few books about Guardi on the market at the moment. So we still rely on this book published in1952.

4.0 out of 5 stars Thought-provoking survey, 26 Oct. 2015
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
We are presented with a series of essays on various aspects of Soviet art, above all in the domain of Socialist Realism, as imposed in 1934 by Stalin through the Party Congress of that year. The articles are indeed thought-provoking, for example calling into question even the existence of Socialist Realism itself. The spatial centrality of the figure of Stalin for the art of the Personality Cult is examined. One article evenlooks at the meaning of the high decoration of the new Moscow Metro. The Soviet cinema as well as the postage stamps of the era are covered. A fascinating study tackles the subject of the advertising for luxury goods at this time. A challenging and varied read.

2.0 out of 5 stars Featuring Constructivism, 26 Oct. 2015

The title promises a wide-ranging survey of Soviet art. In fact, it is narrowly focussed on architecture and above all on Constructivism. Very disappointing.

2.0 out of 5 stars 1930s de-Stalinised out of existence, 26 Oct. 2015
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
I was preparing a presentation on "Soviet Art in the Thirties" when I saw this title advertised on Amazon. It looked to be exactly the source book I needed in my work. After a significant delay, the large quarto volume arrived in good condition. Surprisingly it turned out to be a volume from the Santa Clara County Library (at the heart of Silicon Valley), but with no cancellation stamp. Had the book just been taken from the shelves and sold to a dealer . . . ? The publisher was the Russian Museum in Leningrad, so it should be authoritative. But the date of publication, 1988, turned out to be highly significant. It was in the time of Gorbachev and de-Stalinisation. This meant that the title of the book was completely misleading. Plenty of pictures from the 1920s, but hardly any from the 1930s. 1934 was the crucial date when Stalin through the Party Congress imposed the official doctrine of Socialist Realism. Such art is absent from this book. It therefore turned out to be of no help to me for the presentation that I intended.

Am amazing story of determination, luck and improvisation. Cobham shows himself to be a true imperialist, both in his desire to promote aviation as the potential and future binding force of the Empire and also in his treatment of the "natives" that he comes across on his long journey. A stirring tale of daring-do !
