5.0 out of 5 stars Precious, 29 Mar 2012
This review is from: Death Row - TV Series [DVD] (DVD)
Herzog doesn't judge - he casts a compassionate but detached eye over all his subjects. His conclusions are twofold - 1) that the death penalty is inhumane, and more importantly 2) that our lives are beautiful and precious things that we must never forget to cherish. It is a powerful series of work by a masterful maker of documentaries. A perfect companion to his film, Into The Abyss, I heartily recommend you watch both.

Not being much of a twi-hard I must admit I was dragged to see this by my fiance, but this film genuinely exudes a strong whiff of the LOLs. It's a cracking spoof - the cast have the nailed the mannerisms of K-Stew, R-Patz, et al. And if you can't enjoy a fart joke then you're not human.

A beautifully made export from the land that does romance better than anyone. Heartfelt and funny - cute but never twee, it deserves a huge following. Benoit Poelvoorde is terrific. Like a lot of the other reviewers I saw this with my girlfriend on Valentines Day. We are now engaged - and I like to think that that Valentines date and this wonderful film went a large way to making that happen. So thankyou Romantics Anonymous, not only for my future wife, but also for a very enjoyable 90 minutes.

5.0 out of 5 stars Unforgettable, 29 Mar 2012
This review is from: Into The Abyss [DVD] (DVD)
Werner Herzog has the wonderful gift of being able to get his subjects to open up in the most incredible of ways. Asking a prison chaplain to 'describe an encounter with a squirrel' the man's response captures the whole spectrum of human emotion, from joy to despair and back again: it is one of the most incendiary speeches caught on camera this year - and all the more powerful for being genuine. Herzog's message is that life is precious - and it is a message drummed home by both the tears of the victim and the murderer's growing realisation that he is going to be put to death and there is nothing he can do to stop it. Explosive, thought-provoking stuff - Herzog shows that whether working with bears or criminals, he is the master of the modern documentary.

5.0 out of 5 stars A reich classic, 29 Mar 2012

Really good stuff. Timetravel, aliens, nazis and mechanical arachnids, if that's not your bag then nothing will be. An absolute riot, destined to become something of a cult classic.

Can't get enough of this movie - Samuel L Jackson oozes his trademark cool, while Tom Wilkinson brings a whole load of acting clout to a terrific action flick. So many twists I'm still dizzy... I'm just furious I have to wait a few more weeks to get this!

5.0 out of 5 stars Huge Film, 22 Mar 2012
One of my favourite films from a few years ago - watched it again last night and just had to post a review up. It's searing Scorcese-inspired cinema. Shia LaBeouf shows exactly why at that moment in time he was the most-exciting young actor in Hollywood, Robert Downey-Jr is inspired as his adult version. Brilliant and brutal.

5.0 out of 5 stars A beauty you won't fall asleep to..., 22 Mar 2012
This review is from: Sleeping Beauty [DVD] (DVD)
A lot of fantastic films have been coming out of Australia recently (Snowtown, Animal Kingdom etc.) and this is yet another. Mesmerising, creepy, a little bit saucy - it's a dream to watch. Emily Browning is sensational as the morally-ambigious lead, and it's easy to see why she's getting so much attention over in the US and the UK. If you're a fan of intelligent independent cinema then this haunting fairytale is definitely one to watch.

5.0 out of 5 stars More than a little special, 22 Mar 2012
This review is from: Buck [DVD] (DVD)
Robert Redford, who guest stars on this documentary, is clearly in awe of the man who inspired The Horse Whisperer, and by the end of this film you will be too. Buck is a fascinating character - a man with demons in his closet who overcomes them through his incredible force of will and beautiful humanity. A wonderful documentary regardless of your feelings on horses - this is a portrait of a simply incredible man. It will make you want to go out and get on a horse... perhaps you could whisper them a joke: What's a horse's favourite sport? Stable tennis. Highly Recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars Slowburning Brilliance, 21 Mar 2012
This review is from: Snowtown [DVD] (DVD)
One of the best films of the last year.

Similar to Animal Kingdom or even Brad Pitt's The Assassination of Jesse James, it's a slowburning film, which slowly cranks up the tension to breaking point. Brilliantly shot (get the bluray if possible), directed, and acted. Daniel Henshall is incredible - charismatic and explosively violent in his first film role - a man with a big future. Undoubtedly disturbing, Snowtown will stay with you long after it has finished. Stunning.
