5.0 out of 5 stars Always a good read, 21 Oct 2013

If I had a complaint about the Agatha Raisin books it would be that they are too short. I wait eagerly for the next one and then, all too quickly, I have finished it.

In this book the emphasis is on Toni (Agatha's young assistant) her love life, her career aspirations and her relationship with Agatha. It is always pleasant that the supporting characters are as interesting as Agatha herself. Otherwise it is a lively, engaging plot along the lines of the other books but with enough variation to keep it interesting.

One small point though - made by others - is MC Beaton's idea of what "old" is. Ladies in their 60s no longer have tightly permed grey hair and Agatha is by no means past it at 50+.

3.0 out of 5 stars Not the follow on I expected, 28 Sep 2013

This review is from: Westerby Sisters (Paperback)
I purchased this book because the Westerby Inheritance, which preceeded it, ended on a cliff hanger. This book is only available second hand and is expensive. Imagine my disappointment when I found that the cliff hanger was dismissed in the first 2 pages by killing off 3 of the main characters from the previous book. We were therefore left with the story of the remaining 2 Westerby Sisters and the young heir. True the "baddie" from the previous book was still around, plotting, but the remaining characters were aware of her malice and her machinations were a secondary plot rather than the main one.

Having said that, this was a good romp in true Marion Chesney / MC Beaton style and very enjoyable. But treat it as a stand alone and decide on that basis if it is worth the high price being charged for it.

1938 Birthday Gifts - 1938 Coffee Mug
1938 Birthday Gifts - 1938 Coffee Mug
Offered by Herbys Gifts Ltd
Price: 12.77

4.0 out of 5 stars Good gift for anniversaries or birthdays, 6 Sep 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This mug was just what was needed as a gift for a 75th club anniversary. It features events from 1938 but without any specific comment like "Happy Birthday" which would limit the events for which it would be suitable.

My only reservation was that it was a bit expensive for a mug.

A Cotswold Killing: 1 (The Cotswold Mysteries)

5.0 out of 5 stars very readable with a real feel of the cotswolds, 6 Sep 2013

This book was offered to me by Amazon on the list of "others who bought xxxxx bought this too". I put it on my wish list but waited quite a long time to download it. Eventually I did, and read it whilst on holiday in the Cotswolds. I think this added to my enjoyment of a well written, well thought out book. The fact that the places and streets were fresh in my mind meant that I could really visualise where everything was happening.

My bottom line for murder mysteries is that they can be gripping and exciting without dwelling too much on blood and guts. This book fulfilled this and I look forward to going back to the first book and reading my way through the series.

4.0 out of 5 stars Not a cliff hanger after all!, 4 Sep 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Like others, I thoroughly enjoyed this book finding it exciting and darker than later romances by the same author. However, I was left bereft when it ended on a cliff hanger. Worse, copies of the next book "the Westerbey Sisters" are few and far between and expensive. However, I invested in one and would like to share the following with others who read the first book....

There is no real cliff hanger!... on page 2 of the 2nd book it says "James Bentley's widow ... had taken up residence at the mansion until Lord Welbourne, becoming impatient at their petty spite and their dislike of Lady Jane, ordered their transfer to the dower house" - so that's that. Then, in the next line "Only one week later, however, Lord and Lady Welbourne were killed in an accident". So, presumably MC Beaton changed her mind about a continuing story - and this will be why Amazon didnt see it as necessary to offer the 2nd book.

Hope this helps others.

5.0 out of 5 stars Good buy, 21 Aug 2013

I ordered these trousers from Amazon as I have failed to find womens "zip off" trousers on the high street. They arrived promptly, are well made and an excellent fit. They are long in the leg, so I (at 5'5") had to take them up - but I dont have a problem with that and it is good news for taller women. They also wash easily and dont crease too much. Very pleased with them.

The Only Good Lawyer (A Sheila Malory mystery)
The Only Good Lawyer (A Sheila Malory mystery)
by Hazel Holt
Edition: Paperback

4.0 out of 5 stars Why is this not on Kindle?, 21 Aug 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
I ordered this second hand book as I have been reading through the Sheila Malory books on Kindle, only to reach a point where they are not on the Kindle list. Later books are so I hope this will be rectified soon.

Anyway, the book was a good read - as with the others these are quite gentle books with Sheila Mallory asking questions and thinking through solutions which she then generally passes to the police. Interesting and very readable but not challenging - so good poolside reading.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good easy to follow guide, 21 Aug 2013

Generally a good guide. It was easy to follow and contained walk and cycle routes as well as information on the area. My only quibble would be that it is a large area to cover in a relatively thin book, so there was information which I would have liked but wasnt included. However, if you buy a map as well then it is fine.

5.0 out of 5 stars The last of 6 sisters., 5 Aug 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
I have loved all 6 of these books. MC Beaton is always an easy read, but the development of the characters in this has been delightful - particularly the Squire and the Parson. It is also refreshing to meet again (even if briefly) the characters from earlier books in the series.

Frederica is the last sister, and thought to be the least attractive - but she disproves all this in an original twist.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good first puzzle, 17 April 2013

Our 2 year old loves this. She is good with shapes and this was a step up from the lift-in-and-out puzzles she has done before. It is on cardboard, not wood, so not that durable - but it has clear join points where the child can work out which piece goes where. It also comes in a nice carry box which provided nearly as much fun as the puzzle.
