5.0 out of 5 stars A Great Read, 11 Jun 2014

This really is a wonderfully written "story" of the building of a great institution - not the building, but of the people - actors, directors, designers, writers - who make it live. Rosenthal does a fantastic job of weaving together a very complex story into understandable, and digestible, bites. Lots on the plays that were developed, produced and made, lots on the characters (and they were "characters") who made them.

Didn't see the film, but was interested to pick up the book. Really fascinating story of one man's courage (and idiocy in the face of overwhelming odds), and man's inhumanity to man, and man's humanity. Do try it.

Great ending for our favourite detective (if it is the end, of course). Great story, twists and turns, characters. Rankin at his best.

3.0 out of 5 stars Bit Disappointed, actually, 11 Jun 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
I'm a big Jim Butcher and Dresden Files fan, but a bit disappointed in this one. Perhaps a necessary part of the story of Dresden's transition from wizard to wizard/Knight, so that future books can be more consistent, but a bit all over the place. We will see!

Loved it, what can I say. Very much recommended for all who like Rankin and detective fiction. Go for it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Masterpiece Theatre!, 2 Jun 2014

Wonderful to read a play that I have seen a number of times. Reading it allows one to really look at the skill with which Miller slowly, inexorably, leads to the tragedy at the end. To see the steps by which the reader/viewer is drawn in, in horror, as it reaches the inevitable conclusion. A slow motion disaster.

3.0 out of 5 stars Underbaked, 31 Dec 2013

Pratchett is marvelous in putting together the inventions of the modern world with the weirdness of Discworld, and the invention and building of the railways is a great story. To be frank, this one reflects a bit of Terry's illness. Doesn't quite gel, which is sad. A great writer and a great world.

Hadn't seen this one from Pratchett. Very glad I did. Dodger is a great character. Great arc of the story. Only question I have is the ending. Meeting the Queen? (Victoria in this instance).

Five stars says it. Terry doing his best stuff. Strong story-line, great characters. Imagination. Go for it, I would say.

5.0 out of 5 stars Yes, it is the War of the Roses, but very well done!, 1 Dec 2013

Very well characterized. Martin doesn't pull any punches, however. Like Dickens, the "good" sometimes lose; the bad triumph. But who are the good, and who are the bad?
