The Sett
The Sett
by Sir Ranulph Fiennes
Edition: Paperback

3.0 out of 5 stars a little truth a lot of fiction, 3 Dec 2007
This review is from: The Sett (Paperback)
Having known baldy paul{blackledge}and most of the other Blackburn characters,i can say that this book has more than its fair share of outright lies.No coincidence that all the main players in the book are dead and unable to respond. For anybody looking for a great fictional story to read however,Fiennes weaves a very good tale and if you take it as fiction it is a rivetting story.

5.0 out of 5 stars edinbra, 14 Nov 2007
This review is from: Glue (Paperback)
glue is a great story of growing up on the schemes and enduring friendships.Regarding it being written in east coast dialect,im originally from the west coast and found the dialect no problem.Anybody giving up reading the book because of this is missing a great true to life tale of what its like to grow up on the schemes of scotland.I could relate the characters in this book to my experiences growing up.

The Last Godfather: The Life and Crimes of Arthur Thompson
by Reg McKay
Edition: Paperback
Price: £6.36

4.0 out of 5 stars britains only godfather, 23 Aug 2007
Forget the Krays, the real top dogs in gangland uk were Arthur Thompson and his crew.Running britains toughest city(glasgow)for 30 years was no mean feat.Being shrewd enough to stay out of jail and networking with firms all over the uk made sure Thompson was the kingpin of gangland Britain not just Scotland. From MAD FRANK to the GUVNOR homage is paid to THE LAST GODFATHER.

This true life tale set in south glasgow gangland is a good read.Although pseudonyms r used for most of the characters , if you read any of the scottish papers around the time of john simpsons (paul sim )shooting it is quite easy to figure out who is who.Bud cummings is gangster stuart boyd who died in a car crash in 2004.

4.0 out of 5 stars wee man, 12 Aug 2007
This review is from: The Ferris Conspiracy (Paperback)
Ferris is well liked and respected in scotland (im originally from dumbarton so qualified to say so)This is a good read, although given the material it should be.However where it is let down is Mckays inept and contradictory writing.Read more than one of Mckays books and his stories change.2 examples. In this book blind jonah loses his eye after a drunk throws a glass in a bar and hits him in the face , however in TC Campbells book he loses the same eye in a gang fight.Example 2 the Arthur Thompson ,KRAY twin story goes from being "undoubtedly untrue" in this book , to "this definetely happened"in the Last godfather.Ferris credibility would be better served getting a more skilled co author for his next book.

1.0 out of 5 stars jackanory gangster, 12 Aug 2007
the only people who believe dave is a genuine gangster still believe in santa and the tooth fairy.Although a running joke in gangland uk as the great pretender, dave can spin a great yarn and makes a decent fiction writer. The only thing dave has killed is the credibility of "true"crime books.
