4.0 out of 5 stars Babel or Sigh No More?, 27 Sep 2012
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: Babel (Audio CD)
If you liked Sigh No More you will love this. Especially as it sounds like the same tunes with only the lyrics changed. Way too similar for me. On a second listen you will discover that there are substantial differences; the tunes may sound familiar but they lack what made the first album special. There is little here to make you want to come back for more. I'll keep listening to it - my view may change. But for the minute this is something of a disappointment.

Edited after several listens - well, do I like the album any more? Short answer is yes; although I still feel there are a lot of similarities to Sigh No More. But, and it's a big but; there is nothing to dislike about the album as a whole. No song do I want to skip past, and I keep wanting to listen again. There are some stand out tracks - most notably the title track Babel, Whispers in the Dark, Hopeless Wanderer. Lover of the Light is a total triumph. The bonus tracks are also some of the stand out moments Where Are You now and For Those Below are superb.

So - it gets way better with future listens. In fact I've gone from 3 stars and increased to 4.

5.0 out of 5 stars Superb - Acting to die for, 30 Jun 2012
This review is from: Tyrannosaur [DVD] (DVD)
Really this is a very good film. The story is dark; very dark and not something to warm the cockles of your heart. Or so you would think, as by the end there is plenty of light after the tunnel. But it really is the acting in this that is what makes the film. Olivia Colman - there really are no words to describe how good she is in this - utterly superb; ok so there are words to describe how good she is. And not forgetting Peter Mullan he is horrible; lovely; angry; kind; helpful; violent - sometimes all in one scene.

A difficult film to watch at times; but the rewards make the journey worthwhile.

2.0 out of 5 stars Oh Dear What Went Wrong?, 30 Jun 2012
Something must have gone very wrong somewhere in the production of this film. You have some rather nice special effects but they are saddled to a story that is barely that - "lights go out; aliens attack; people die; other people run around; then it ends". The acting is adequate but full of cliché as if no real effort was put into the script. This would have been a great little film if it had been put together as a short by a film student and posted on line. However it tries to be more than that and fails on all levels.

I'm not having much luck with films at the minute. Fingers crossed for the next one.

1.0 out of 5 stars Mind Numbingly Awful, 30 Jun 2012
This review is from: Take Shelter [Blu-ray] (Blu-ray)
Thankfully I only rented this film. Awful, awful, awful. Nothing happens, nothing. And while nothing happens a great deal of talking occurs. And when there's no talking there is the endless naval gazing; endless naval gazing. Oh and of course no smiling. This must have been a big part of the script "under no circumstances is an actor to be found smiling while cameras are rolling". Oh and the story, or rather what passes for it; "ok so there's this guy, right; and this guy sees a storm; but it's only a vision; and then he is unhappy; and his kid can't hear" and so it goes on. I wont spoil the end - but thankfully it does end.

Not a fan.

1.0 out of 5 stars Does what it says on the tin - or rather did, 19 April 2012

Needed a second battery as my Xperia mini pro was using it's original battery up after half a day. New one arrived quickly and has held it's charge very well. For the price this is hard to beat.

This is an update - after about a month of using this battery it now does not hold it's charge very well - have reverted back to the original battery that came with the phone as it's still holding way more charge than this one.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great idea, 4 Oct 2011

Saw this show in Bath this year. Superb performance. You basically follow Greg's life following a book that he has. A very simple concept but so well executed it is genius. I have not laughed so much for a long time. Highly reccomended and a definate purchase for me.

5.0 out of 5 stars Superb, 27 Sep 2011

I'm giving this 5 stars based just on the first 2 films. Alien is simply superb but Aliens pushes the picture quality through the roof. It could have been filmed yesterday it is so clear. At the price this is on Amazon it is a must buy for any bluray fan.

Bought these for my dad as he needed a new pair. Set up was a little complicated but once I realised you need to turn to volume up on the TV quiet high they worked fine. Was very impressed with the sound quality and am now planning on buying a pair for myself.

5.0 out of 5 stars Harry Potter sucked me in, 23 April 2011
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Hate to admit it but it was watching the latest Harry Potter that pulled me towards this album. Found out the featured track was O Children and ventured onto itunes thinking I'd buy just that one track. Had a listen to the others and thought to myself that this sounds like a lovely collection of songs. Of course I then bought it from amazon and glad I was too as the packaging on this double album is very nice. Given the album a couple of listens so far and love it - all the songs are different with a wide variety of styles. Can't recomend this highly enough - give it a listen. You wont be disappointed.
