It is so nice to have real wood at an affordable price. Excellent colour as well, not too overpowering. Very easy to hang. Quick delivery as well.

3.0 out of 5 stars Mind the Gap?, 7 Dec. 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This book feels like that. A bridge between the strength of Snuff and hopefully whatever is coming next. The goblins are being integrated as a sapient species and that seems to be the spine of this book with even the railway proving subsidiary.

The dwarfs are having to run to catch up before they are sidelined by the new, more current, small race of Disc-folk. They seem to have stagnated since the time of the Koom Valley accord which strikes a very odd note given that everybody else, especially the trolls have taken their place in the more modern Disc society and that Rhys, the low king was always portrayed as the modern face of dwarfdom.

Even Vetinari is being modernised, taking a central role away from his office in a way not seen since Night Watch (when he didn't actually have an office). And Drumknott is quite frankly unbelievable in his new persona.

The book has a bit of a roll-call feel to it with many minor characters from previous novels given at least a mention. I mean Queen Keli? But in amongst the throng is the biggest gap of the whole book. Carrot is not mentioned once (though Angua gets a small look-in). While it has been apparent for some time that Pratchett feels constrained by the character of Carrot, especially since the coming of Moist von Lipwig, who is almost the 'anti-Carrot', took the whole story of the Disc down a very different route to what had gone before. This is especially notable in that Vimes gets to interact with Moist in this book in a previously unexplored way. But still, leaving Carrot completely out is a crude omission which shows a previously unseen lack of care for narrative continuity.

There is definitely a padded feel to this book; actually an over-padded feel if I'm really honest. A pretty slight core story in the context of the whole series, bulked up by nothing very much.

I get the feeling that it might actually be all change after this rather than mind the gap but I hope not because where would winter be without the familiarity of the Disc to keep fantasy fans happy?

5.0 out of 5 stars Very much admired!, 13 Oct. 2013

First time I wore these they were admired by lots of people. Even better then that they were exactly as pictured and delivered very quickly. Excellent updates on delivery including -for the first time- an e-mail saying they had been put through the letter box as there was no-one at home. Will certainly use this supplier again.

3.0 out of 5 stars An old friend available on Kindle, 9 Sept. 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
A lovely old book set just after WW2 and dealing with the after effects on a middle-class English family. Nothing too startling or original but, as always with Monica Dickens, warm characters the reader can care about and a nicely spun plot. Unfortunately the misprints are truly shocking hence the low star rating.

5.0 out of 5 stars Yummy!, 1 Sept. 2013

Well this was a find. On my new organic style of eating I was afraid I might be tempted to look for sweets. This delicious paste fills the breach very well. Sweetness from the almond paste and the satisfaction of raw chocolate. Spread on thin rice/corn cakes or sliced fruit it is sweetness without the big bad S!

5.0 out of 5 stars Lovely side dish (or main course), 1 Sept. 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This is a lovely meal in a can. I have recently become a vegetarian and this has proved an excellent addition to my larder. Heats up quickly (oven or microwave) and I either have it with salad or some mushrooms. Delicious! Recommended for times when you want something quick but substantial. Not too spicy either.

This is a great book explaining in simple terms just what is wrong with so many people's health today - their liver is not functioning well. It then shows how diet can correct this. The diet is not easy but it WORKS. And after all, what more can you ask for!

4.0 out of 5 stars Glad to know it's Jo, 10 Aug. 2013
Truth is, if I hadn't heard this was JK I might not have read it. It was a nice rollicking story but the language was truly hair-raising. It needs to be a heavier weight story if you want all that. Also, of course, the ending was wrongly chosen. Still, I reckon she's probably got another winning series here (TV not film tho).
