5.0 out of 5 stars A good example of a Coen Bros film, 10 Dec 2005
This review is from: Raising Arizona [1987] [DVD] (DVD)
This is a most entertaining film about a childless couple, a recidivist petty criminal, 'Hi', perfectly cast in Nicholas Cage and his desperate wife 'Ed' well characterised by diminutive Holly Hunter, living in a trailor in the desert somewhere in Arizona. They decide to kidnap a baby from the family of Nathan Arizona, a white wood furniture manufacturer who has quins and 'therefore wouldn't miss one of them!' There are numerous 'Coenesque' characters throughout, including 2 amusing criminal brothers, friends from jail (John Goodman)and a nightmare 'Angel of Death' on a black, fire breathing Harley, as the nemisis of 'Hi'. After many adventures, including much black humour, there is a heartwarming conclusion and a 'happy ever after ending' which means that most human emotions are touched, the essence of a good comedy. Highly recommended and a good introduction to the varied films of the eccentric Coen Brothers.

5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful Catch 22, 6 Dec 2005
This review is from: Catch - 22 [DVD] (DVD)
This has to be one of my all time favourite films, well worth revisiting from time to time. It has everything, amazing humour (much of it black) drama, pathos, adventure and with an ending that leaves you believing in hope and optimism, however great the odds seem against you. The cinematography and sound track are both colourful and enigmatic and the whole experience is one of complete entertainment. I strongly recommend it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Billy Liar revisited, 6 Dec 2005
This review is from: Billy Liar [DVD] (DVD)
A wonderful, amusing and entertaining film, full of nostagia of the times, for those who have lived through them. Tom Courtenay is perfectly cast as the day dreaming Billy Fisher, unable to take the final step necessary to achieving anything of substance. Ably supported by a cast of great characters, to an ending that is both poignant and sad. British film making at its best, an evergreen.

4.0 out of 5 stars Monsieur Hulot's Holiday, 30 Nov 2005
A truly charming film full of amusing characters and much gentle humour. It takes you back to a simpler age in the 50's and induces feelings of nostalgia. Recommended for those seeking something different and not too challenging.
