5.0 out of 5 stars I never go camping without an adequate supply of these., 23 July 2014

Essential camping accessory if you're in a tent and using the field is not an option. It's a long way to the toilets at a festival unless you want to camp near the smell and constant noise and door slamming etc. Also navigating all the tents and guy ropes is not funny when you're in dire need....
Discovered these a few years back. Problem solved. No smell, the stuff inside absorbs liquid, so no spills either. Just don't overfill it..... 'nuff said.

Hugh Tracey 15-Note Alto Kalimba (Mbira or Thumb Piano)
Hugh Tracey 15-Note Alto Kalimba (Mbira or Thumb Piano)

5.0 out of 5 stars Wow. Why did I wait so long to get one?, 23 July 2014

I've seen Kalimbas around for years and tried a few in shops, festival stalls, etc. Some sounded OK, other dreadful, never really paid much attention still I stumbled on a youtube clip of someone playing one superbly and I was hooked.

Considerable hours on the interweb led me to the Hugh Tracey range of Kalimbas and to cut this story short, I only found a limited number of European suppliers and their range didn't cover all the HT instruments, so I opted for the 15 note Alto with resonator box.

Never seen one or heard one before in real life, so it was a bit of a gamble, but so glad I did. It comes in a blue box with some instructions inside (not extensive, but enough to get you started and tell you what each tine (the metal strip) is tuned to . If you're already at home with the western musical scale, then it will be very easy to understand. starting form the centre G (1), the right hand side tines are the odd notes (3,5,7,etc) and the left hand the evens (2,4,6,8, etc), so in order to play a scale you go centre, left, right, left, right, and so on moving outwards one time for each note played. Pretty intuitive so far.

Playing tunes will take some time to get used to the positions, but without even trying hard I got a half decent version of Red Haired Boy within a couple of minutes, just by applying the suck it and see method.

This Alto Kalimba model is a essentially bolted onto a wooden box. Made of African something or other, can't remember off the top of my head, but it feels and smells wonderful. It has two small holes on the underside and one large sound hole on top. These allow a wah-wah effect by opening closing (Bottom holes) or moving thumb over the top one.

The tines are all tuned (G in this case) to western scale but the whole instrument can be returned to whatever you want, within the constraints of the tine lengths. Some examples are provided in the box.

The tone is superb and sweet with lots of overtones giving the whole instrument a wonderful warmth, something that is definitely missing in your festival stall Kalimbas. The box itself is a joy to hold. Might be an issue with someone with small hands though and frankly, that is just about the only slightly negative thing I can find to say and it's not a problem for me.

Not cheap and there are alternatives out there, but will they sound as good as the Hugh Tracey? maybe, maybe not. I'm no expert, so all I can say is that I'm really pleased with this. It looks and feels like it will last a lifetime with a bit of loving care.

Enough of this, I'm off to play the Kalimba now. The banjo can sit on the stand for a little while........

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent product. Recommended., 14 July 2014

Does the job well. Used it constantly since bought and no problem so far. Quite and with two fans, keeps laptop really cool. As per all these things, needs occasional servicing with a puffer to remove dust.

This one is the only one I would recommend of all the ones Ive tried so far. All the others lasted a few months at most and then just broke down or were too noisy.

4.0 out of 5 stars OK, but are these really "musicians" earplugs? I don't think so., 14 July 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
They do the job, but frankly I'm not sure what these have that is any different from £0.50 earplugs. They do cut out a lot of frequencies, specially lows. There isn't an open channel inside to just reduce the volume, so basically they are just bog standard ear plugs with a handy pouch and string.

Hence only 3 stars.

Not a bad first offering from Jupiter, but not up to the live performance. Saw this band at Womad last year hand had been looking forward to their first release, but have a been a bit disappointed. I like it, but it's not a regular listen. Seems a bit too introverted, if that makes sense.

Good size bottle. Only issue is that if you fill it with a fizzy drink, it will leak a bit as the pressure mounts inside. Best thing is to ensure the lid is off when filling, leave a good gap at the top and leave the lid off for 2 -3 minutes to get rid of some of the fizz. Hence only 4 stars.

Non fizzy drinks, no leak at all.

3.0 out of 5 stars Good basic strap, 14 July 2014

As a basic no thrills strap, it does the job it's meant to do and for the price, can't complain. Can slip off shoulders easily if the instrument hasn't got much weight , like my bass uke.

Perfect for what I needed. A strap button on the neck on my bass uke, which doesn't have one, for reasons I can't work out.

Would also work well on any other wooden instrument. Just remember to predrill a hole for the screw first or yo may split the wood.
