Tribal Seeds

4.0 out of 5 stars Rock/Reggae crossover..., 18 July 2008
This review is from: Tribal Seeds (Audio CD)
Impressive reggae/rock blend, quite original in style and with plenty of angst. On the downside it can get a bit repetetive, but all in all a good album, with particularly impressive vocals (and strong song-writing) from Steven Jacobo.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great D'n'B Tunes..., 18 July 2008
This review is from: Hard Times (Audio CD)
Silent Witness and various parters DNAudio stablemates have been producing top quality Drum 'n' Bass for ages it seems, but this CD is something of a novelty - if only for its format! Two discs of characteristically heavy tech-edged tunes, the second one being a live mix (Silent Witness & Squire). Two for one, a bargain, personal favourites are Break's Meridian and Silent Witness' Contempt. Highly recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars Let the bass go!, 18 July 2008
This review is from: Dubstep Allstars Vol. 2 (Audio CD)
More heavy tunes to test the power of your bass speakers. Not quite so raw as the first mix, but that bit of polish does no harm at all. Names that have gone on to feature in almost all compilations of the genre, such as Skream, feature heavily. Once again a welcome addition to the collection.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Intro to Dubstep..., 18 July 2008
This review is from: Dubstep Allstars Vol. 1 (Audio CD)
This is the first in a great series. If you are interested in hearing what all the fuss is about, buy this and put it on loud. No messing about with bad vocals, just huge, heavy, dubs.

3.0 out of 5 stars Not Bad, 18 July 2008
Certainly some good strong tunes on this mix, but hesitate to recommend it since it, for me, is over-run by the overlaid vocals. Shame, and a bit of a waste.

Err, that's about it really. Not enough DUBstep and too many chav shoutalongs... Buy Dubstep Allstars mixes if you want the real deal - they blow this out of the water.

4.0 out of 5 stars Go on, dub yourself!, 5 Nov. 2006
This review is from: Skream (Audio CD)
Truly excellent, innovative album. Demonstrates how heavy bass lines can stroll across moods, sometimes dark and downbeat and sometimes uplitfing. Moments such as the haunting flute in Rutten combining with massive bass rumble that just seems to gel together brilliantly. For me some of the more vocal orientated tracks (Check-it/Tapped) bring the star rating down to 4, but it was a close run thing. If you're wanting to add something genuinely new to your collection, look no further.

5.0 out of 5 stars Classic Jungle, 1 Nov. 2006
How much bass can you handle? Mad professor gets to work on some big, bass heavy jungle tracks. Even the chimps get excited! Excellent album that still listens to well over 10 years down the line. A must for those who like their D'n'B with a reggae twist, think Digital, Ray Keith, remixed Salmonella Dub etc.

3.0 out of 5 stars Interesting but ultimately disappointing., 19 Aug. 2006
Nothing particularly unexpected here, the production and musicianship is excellent but as a whole the album has far too few highlights. It is essentially Drum and Bass but in a rather self indulgent style. Recommend to fans of Squarepusher's more 'difficult' material but there are no big dance floor numbers on here, save perhaps for 'Inteligent' which is my personal favourite.

4.0 out of 5 stars Funky and entertaining, 27 Mar. 2006
This review is from: ROOTY (Audio CD)
I think that I like this album because it's just a lot of fun. Although not my usual fare I appreciate any sort of music where the artists don't take themselves too seriously and disappear up their own fundamental while churning out the same thing you've heard time and time before.
Basement Jaxx never lose sight of two important things, firstly that an album has to have some variation to keep you interested, and secondly it has to be ENTERTAINING. 2 great tracks on the album are 'Where's your Head at?' and 'Get Me Off' and it's indicative of how good the album is that the tracks are good for different reasons.
Anyway, not one to over analyse, one to stick in the CD player and turn the volume up on...
