5.0 out of 5 stars DAVE'S SAD STORY, 25 Nov 2009
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: Nature [Us Import] (Audio CD)
Alas, one of the finest and most original bands of all time appear to have dis-banded. They made some great and original albums with some brilliant songs. 'Nature' is no exception, laced with songs that stick in your mind like musical super glue. These guys had such a sparkling career ahead of them, but, as so often stated, together they are far greater than as individuals. Kelly Flint is superb in DTS, her solo album is nice, but ordinary. Dave Cantor is a great songwriter/guitarist, but no singer. This is their last, award winning, album, buy it, play it, enjoy it and then seek out their other recordings Sex Without BodiesUnauthorizedDave's True Story whilst they are still available. Perhaps, one day....

5.0 out of 5 stars NEW WORKS?, 17 Nov 2009
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
First and foremost, this is a beautiful album well worth buying. A lovely mixture of different instruments - piano, cello, harp, voice & harp, string quartets etc, all creating a fine album.

My only query is with the description "New works", erm, Reflexionem & Quanta Qualia have been released by Patrick Hawes before and After the Rain was surely on Classic FM's 2005 release 'The Quiet Room'. Maybe 'New arrangements' might have been more acurate. But, don't let that put you off this CD!

Reflexionem (in this setting) is so beautiful (not that it wasn't on Towards the Light') , Julian Lloyd-Webber plays with sensativity, well supported by the sensative harp of Claire Jones.

So, whether you already have 'Blue in Blue', 'Towards the light' or 'The Quiet Room', one or none of these, add this to your collection, you will not regret it.

5.0 out of 5 stars MUSIC ON MY MIND, 16 Nov 2009
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: Cavatina (Audio CD)
This CD contains the beautiful 'Cavatina' & 'Romance d'Amour', that is surely enough to tempt anyone to buy this superb album, Sollscher is an excellent guitar player, the equal of any other guitarists who play these songs. But, this is not the reason I bought this album, for sitting at the very end of the track listing is: 'Georgia on my Mind' the wonderful Hoagy Carmichael song - and this version for guitar is spellbinding.

I was always disappointed that the great Ella Fitzgerald never recordsed a Hoagy Songbook, but I am surprised and delighted that Mr Sollscher has recorded this song. Perhaps, after his Lennon-McCartney discs, he may record a complete Hoagy album, I hope so.

5.0 out of 5 stars STUNNING, 16 Nov 2009
When I bought this CD I already had a version of the Requiem, I wanted 'The Cantique de Jean Racine'. When I played the entire CD all other versions faded into insignificance. I have since heard many different versions of both pieces, but this version is heartbreakingly beautiful. The Cantique is a peerless piece of choral music, indeed, along with Satie's Gymnopedies No.1, it is my joint all time favourite. Just listen and be amazed.

4.0 out of 5 stars ONE SUNNY DAY WITHOUT YOU, 11 Nov 2009
This review is from: Then Play On (Audio CD)
It has been correctly mentioned that this release of 'Then Play On' is the U.S. listing, not the original U.K. listing. We all know that 'Oh Well' was added, but, which two tracks were omitted? Both songs that were left off were written by Danny Kirwan, 'One Sunny Day' & the beautiful 'Without You'. In this age of 70+ minute CDs, omitting these two tracks is really stupid, take the 14 original tracks, add 'Oh Well' and you have a playing time of just 60 minutes, well within the scope of a single CD. So shame upon the record company! If, like me, you want the missing tracks, well, they are on an album called 'Original Fleetwood Mac', but be warned, I think there may be 2 albums with that title! So check the track listing (I think they are tracks 17 & 18).

As for 'Then Play On', a masterful album with some wonderful tracks, well worth adding to any collection, too many good tracks to mention, just listen to the album.

And why only 4 stars? That is for the record company.

BTW, the original CD releases by the Rolling Stones suffered that same fate - U.S. listings instead of the original U.K. Someone should tell record companies that we are not the 51st State! (or are we?)

4.0 out of 5 stars WORTH THE WAITS!, 10 Nov 2009
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Sorry about the pun in the title, couldn't resist it. What we have here are two concerts - London '79 & Chicago '75. Like most Waits recordings or performances, this is essential for Waits fans and, perhaps not too difficult for people new to the man. Anyway, it includes 'San Diego Serenade' & 'Burma Shave' which I think are amongst his best songs of the 70's. Weird & wonderful.

5.0 out of 5 stars Lyndon Johnson Told The Nation, 10 Nov 2009
In my folk club days (69/70) you could not get through an evening without at least one person performing one of the classics from Tom's first album. Other reviews have rightly written of the gems on these two re-released albums, but, as yet, none have mentioned the one track that is so relevant today:

Change the name from Lyndon Johnson to George W Bush, Vietnam to Iraq and see what has changed in 40 odd years, what lessons have our leaders learnt about the futility of war. This is not an anti-war protest review, but just an attempt to point out an amazing similarity between two no-win conflicts.

Tom Paxton is a great singer-songwriter and his albums will grace any collection.

5.0 out of 5 stars EXCELLENT AGAIN!, 9 Nov 2009
This review is from: Morning Again (Audio CD)
Possibly my favourite Tom Paxton album (although all the Elektra ones were brilliant), tracks such as 'Now that I've taken my life', Victoria dines alone' and 'So much for winning' are superbly crafted sad songs while 'Talking Vietnam pot luck blues' is very funny (but true) - cleverly worded. If you are familiar with the folk club standards from earlier albums that made his name, you will find this different, but a good 'different', open your minds and enjoy

4.0 out of 5 stars A WELL-MEANING ALBUM, 6 Nov 2009
Ralph McTell never actually released a bad album, some are just better than others and that depends purely on individual taste. This came out after Ralph left 'Transatlantic' and before his 'Warner' period. If you don't have this and are a fan, then you must buy it, if you arenew to McTell and want the best then check out 'Spiral Starcase', 'Easy' or 'Not till Tomorrow' first, but don't write this one off.

4.0 out of 5 stars GREAT VALUE, 6 Nov 2009
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: Flute Adagios (Audio CD)
This double album is great value for people who love flute music. The majority of tracks will be very well known pieces and are played by excellent and mostly well known musicians. It is one of a series of Decca 2CD sets that 'feature' a particular instrument (Guitar, Piano, Cello, Violin, Harp etc). If you like this one it is worth checking out the others, all offering the same excellent quality.
