A good sequel to the same author's "Nefertiti" which I enjoyed very much. A good read for anyone who loves ancient Egypt. Her portrayal of the politics and dynamics of the times is thought-provoking and believable.

I fell in love with William Marshall in the first book about him by Elizabeth Chadwick - The Greatest Knight. This follows the story of William from his loveless and unwanted childhood, through lonely and unprotected youth, to being established as an important lord in turbulent times. Chadwick portrays the gritty realities of the period, so that the reader understands it as though they had been there. Chadwick does an unusual feat in making a truly good and admirable character attractive, without making him unbelievable or too much a goody-goody. It is in a way a male Cinderella-story, but doesn't seem at all like a fairy-tale.
The Scarlet Lion continues the story of William Marshall as he guides his family and the family's lands through very turbulent times indeed. From being a victorious young knight, William turns out a statesman who helps to bring England to a more stable place than it has been for many years. This too is a feat by the author - she has written about an older person, in his fifties, sixties and seventies, while keeping the reader's interest. I am usually interested in a famous person's early life, while interest drops off in their later years. Here my interest was kept throughout.

I love to read about individuals in history, and about what happened to all their children and children's children - it brings history to life. I would like an even more detailed book, in which the descendants were listed in entirety!

A very minor poet, but some witty and charming poems among them. I had met with Fanthorpe in collections of Xmas poems on the internet, and hers stood out among the best.

A British classic in a cheap and acceptable form - what's not to like? Plenty of explanatory notes by experts on the period.

I was sorry to miss the series of Radio 4 talks of the same name, but this book was an acceptable substitute. It was truly fascinating., and I learned a lot. My one disappointment was that the quality of the pictures of the 100 Objects was not very good in some cases.

They are what we wanted for church and are satisfactory - that's all I can say. I chose them for value for money, so they must have been cheapest.

2.0 out of 5 stars Boring, book too big, 23 Jan. 2013

This was an old book and smelt mouldy! Also the colour photos were limited. I didn't like the choice of objects. The text was too extensive and didn't make the objects seem exciting
