Dredd-tastic movie!, 11 Jan 2013
I read Dredd as a young lad, but havent ventured back since (a 20 year gap!). I'm more of a movie guy now adays. I saw this at the cinema, out of curiosity. Wow. I won't repeat the other reviewers comments except to say I agree with them. For perhaps the first time, 3D is used to enhance a plot point, and succeeds brilliantly. The visuals are superb and work very well with what has to be said is an, erm straight forward plot.
In summary, in some respects it reminded me of the more "hard core" classic 80s 18 rated movies in its attitude and approach (in short: the plot and direction are not compromised to make the film accessible for a younger audience). However, the atttiude of the movie is coupled with a contemporary sophistication and nuance that the HBO generation will like. Ignore its comic book heritage - I think the movie stands very firmly on its own. I would add as a final point that there are a number of subtle references to the comic book heritage that will put the comic book fanboys in heaven, but do not in any way jeopardise the enjoyment or understanding for some one with no prior knowledge of "Dredd verse" - it is, seriously, that accessible.
