4.0 out of 5 stars Surprisingly underrated and very modern still, 10 April 2014

This review is from: Balance Of Power (Audio CD)
Surprisingly underrated, possibly due to Jeff Lynne's and the record label's flagging enthusiasm , this album stands up well now with strong tracks like Getting to the Point, Calling America Heaven Only Knows and the lovely ballad Without Someone . It was an exceptionally short album but this reissue significantly lengthens it which leaves you wondering why the three "new" tracks added in no way being fillers. An unexpected delight that plays well as an in-car driving music album.

1.0 out of 5 stars Dreadful. Two received items both faulty/damaged and needed returning, 3 Feb 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Very disappointing. I choose to ignore some of the poor reviews and the grill, though slightly tinny, was smart but lacking a closing clip and it topples when it stands up. However, the first one didn't work AT ALL and the second one had a completely cracked open underside from the transit. The customer support staff were quite professional and I received a refund and I have had a Shef kitchen scales which looks smart and works well. Yet, to avoid frustration, avoid this product

5.0 out of 5 stars A unique sound in the modern era, 14 July 2012
This review is from: Pretty. Odd. (Audio CD)
A very catchy, brave album that mixes older elements from the first album with 60's-esque influences encompassing everything from the Beach Boys, The Beatles, The Kinks and The Byrds to 70's classic and progressive rock in an entirely original and melodic set. It's a pity that Ryan Ross and Jon Walker left after the tour and live album which followed (perhaps a little rashly, as both have gone on to less successful things- but what price happiness?). You are unlikely to find another Panic! album like this as the present duo have gone back to, and actually advanced onwards from the sound of the first album on their new outing "Vices..." . Enjoy this as a rather unique collection amongst all the albums released since the millenium.

I keep returning to Come Back and Story of the Blues - truly life-affirming. Pete Wylie in all of his incarnations, always inspires.

4.0 out of 5 stars There is more to this than OBLIVION and GENESIS, 6 May 2012
This review is from: Visions (Audio CD)
Grimes (Claire Boucher)is such a likeable, unspoilt young lady with rapidly evolving embryonic talent. She is at her best when she doesn't present herself with limitations. Yes, do Liz Frazer "lost-vocals" when it suits but there isn't anything wrong with some straight vocals, or noe at all. I agree with some comments that the album becomes a little samey and the difficulty lies in having such a couple of knock-out tracks - Oblivion and Genesis slap-bang together, However , there are a number of growers, and if you like good beat-tracks and synth-bass lines then tracks like Be a Body will not disappoint. Circumambient, Vowels and Symphonia IX have real substance. Not to everyone's taste as a whole and , perhaps disappointing to those wanting Genesis/Oblivion 1 through to 12 or 13 ... if you are a fan of varied and textured synth-based music and you like unapologetically feminine vocals and lyrical stylings, this is definitely a 4 out of 5 and, if you are impressed by how far the 24 year old Grimes has come in such a short amount of time ( and modest volume of recordings), you will consider rating it 5 out of 5.

5.0 out of 5 stars A real grower and a fantastic WHOLE album, 6 May 2012
This review is from: Making Mirrors (Audio CD)
Trust me , this is a grower. At first it seems an oddly disjointed blend ... considering the hugely catchy Somebody.. and Eyes Wide Open. For example, it starts with thew tiny, quiet Making Mirrors opener, then the brilliant but oddly truncated Track 2. But.. and such a huge but .... it will grow on you so much in its entirety and you will find yourself playing it , for sure, to keep hearing these tow track at first, but you will find yourself listening through and looking forward to each track as it follows on. It is such a great daily car journey album. The production quality is second to none. The lyrics are varied in tone, mood and subject matter and make their point with a stiletto-like sharpness and surgical lack of clutter. To repeat, trust me , this is such a delight and,l contrary to what some people conclude from it's variety, it hangs together so well as a whole. Easily a candidate for album of the year - and I am one person who has a very, very varied collection of music. 5 out of 5 without hesitation ... but please remember, give the whole album time to breath and you will keep coming back to it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Totally underrated due to Lex of Love, 24 Oct 2011
This review is from: Beauty Stab (Audio CD)
In it's own right, this is a great album that is crying out to be remastered. Don't miss out. From the opening rips of That was then to SOS, these songs are well-crafted. United Kingdom is a final track that also grows upon you.
