5.0 out of 5 stars Brilliant game, 25 Dec. 2013

Fabulous game - like scrabble but yet not! The trick is to make as many words as quickly as possible and not get hung up on overly complicated long ones. Everyone I have introduced this to loves it, quite absorbing and fills many a rainy afternoon!

4.0 out of 5 stars Snug and comfortable but controls a bit limited, 25 Dec. 2013

I love the feel of this blanket, the fleece makes is super comfortable and unusually the controls don't dig into your shoulders just where you are trying to sleep - unlike MANY other blankets. Doesn't get 5* as the control is a bit limited, other electric blankets have a setting to allow you to put the heating on a delay (e.g. to come on in 3 hours time) and this one doesn't. You can set the top and feet separately which is a nice touch. Overall a good buy.

4.0 out of 5 stars Enjoyable but not earth shattering, 25 Dec. 2013

This review is from: The Luminaries (Hardcover)
I really enjoyed reading this, which is lucky given it's 800 pages long. I think you lose a bit of the structure when reading it on a Kindle as I only realised after reading other reviews that the chapters get shorter and titles give clues to the content. That said, it's a fun, readable Victorian murder mystery in the Wilkie Collins or Dickensian style, together with an interesting insight into how the life was for the men and women chasing gold across the globe. Doesn't get 5* as it didn't change my world view in the same way as Cloud Atlas, or educate like Wolf Hall, but nonetheless a worthwhile read.

4.0 out of 5 stars Drags a bit but makes you think, 11 Sept. 2013

I read the book before the film and I'm glad I did. It means you can relax and enjoy the film without being hugely irritated at the end. Lyrical and thought provoking but it takes ages to set the scene and one can't help thinking "get on the lifeboat with the tiger already"! That said its very though provoking and stayed with me. Definitely worth a read.

5.0 out of 5 stars Phenomenal, 11 Sept. 2013

I wanted to read this before seeing the film and I thank goodness I never had to do it at school as I think you'd totally miss the point. Completely resonates with the excesses of today's 1%, the love story has an achingly realistic ending and you'll think about it for ages afterwards.

5.0 out of 5 stars A love letter to Dickens and London, 11 Sept. 2013

All the charm of Discworld transferred to Dickensian London. I love TP but this was one of his better novels, lots Nd fun Victorian in-jokes and great characters with parallels to some Discworld favourites. What's not to love?

I just loved this book. It has great quirky humour and addresses a topic people tend to avoid without being miserable or mawkish. Made me laugh out loud a few times, definitely made me cry at one point and has a satisfying ending so you finish with a smile on your face (phew

A real pageturner, takes a bit of a while to get going so you have to apply the “First 50 pages rule” but once you get into it, it’s totally gripping. All the stories weave in and out of each other building up to an explosive conclusion. Also you don’t resent jumping from backwards and forwards one story to another as they are all gripping. It’s good humoured, pacey and fun.
