The RIAS Bach Cantatas Project Berlin 1949 - 1952
The RIAS Bach Cantatas Project Berlin 1949 - 1952
Price: £47.25

5.0 out of 5 stars One of the most important releases in years, 14 Jan 2013
This collection of Bach's Cantatas is without a doubt one of the most important releases of the Master's works on CD in recent years. Karl Ristenpart's peerless direction of ensembles with many of Europe's top musicians adds up to the leading interpretations of Bach's music on record, most of which has been unavailable for years. The recording standard is very high and the musicianship speaks for itself. A worthy accompaniment to Accord's box set (finally released in 2003) of Ristenpart's Bach Orchestral Works.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great explanations of complex topics, 2 Dec 2011
This review is from: Out of Your Mind (Audio CD)
Growing up in Portland, OR in the early 70s, I regularly listened to and was fascinated by Alan Watts' Pacifica Radio broadcasts, which originated at KPFA in the Bay Area. Watts was a superb writer and had few peers in making complex topics understandable, but I came to his many books only after being inspired by his "lectures" on those Pacifica radio shows. There was nothing like it on the air. Alan Watts not only has something to say; how he says it is wonderful to the ear. His voice is unmistakable and he makes complex connections with ease, bringing the audience along every step of the way, all without taking himself too seriously which only emphasizes his mastery of the subject matter. This extensive collection from the early 70s era captures Watts, in style and content, perfectly.

Getting Started in Consulting
Getting Started in Consulting
by Alan Weiss
Edition: Paperback
Price: £9.65

5.0 out of 5 stars Still a constant reference 10 years on, 24 Mar 2010
One of the luckiest moments early in my consulting practice was coming across this book in the New York City Library. This is not a book on consulting methodologies; rather it is an intensely practical and challenging guide to market and build your consulting practice. Following the principles Alan Weiss set out in this book, ten years on it remains (along with many of Alan Weiss's other books) a vital reference point today. To anyone considering taking on the challenges and rewards of serving clients in consulting, this book is the best initial investment you can make. Highly recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars Plausible, creative, terrific conspiracy novel, 23 Mar 2010
This review is from: Tears of Autumn (Paperback)
One of the very best from one of America's top novelists. The portrait of the people around JFK and what happened to them in the aftermath of the President's murder is worth the price alone, but the results of Paul Christopher's hunt for the motives and the identities of the southeast Asian conspirators behind the assassination of the President will keep the reader wondering long after the last page has been turned. Highly recommended.

4.0 out of 5 stars Contradictions and common threads, 23 Mar 2010
This review is from: Letters from Leaders (Hardcover)
Both inspirational and contradictory, this unusual book has many common threads and thought provoking ideas. Clearly many of the letter writers (including Presidents and royalty, diplomats, journalists, artists, religious leaders and "captains of industry") took their assignment seriously, to impart some of what they learned in life with modesty and humanity to young people starting out on their own paths. One of the highlights of this edition are the fold out color replicas of many of the actual "Letters" written to the author on the subject of leadership and life advice.

5.0 out of 5 stars Possibly the best CD ever made?, 14 Aug 2009
This review is from: Fate Of Nations (Audio CD)
Superlative songs, musicianship, and high technical standards make this one of the outstanding releases of the 1990s. Almost 20 years on it never fails. One of the finest CDs ever.

5.0 out of 5 stars Insightful, practical, and very useful, 30 Jan 2008
Ailes and Kraushar's tips and techniques for expressing ideas clearly in public or in private are right on. Recognizing you don't have to memorize rules to communicate effectively is at the center of this insightful and useful book. Highly recommended.

The World's Newest Profession: Management Consulting in the Twentieth Century (Cambridge Studies in the Emergence of Global Enterprise)
The World's Newest Profession: Management Consulting in the Twentieth Century (Cambridge Studies in the Emergence of Global Enterprise)
by Christopher D. McKenna
Edition: Hardcover
Price: £25.02

5.0 out of 5 stars Insightful and provacative, 30 Jan 2008
McKenna's book shows how the world's biggest consulting firms got that way (anti-competitive legislation in the USA), how they marketed successfully (styling themselves after big law firms), and how, despite never being a true "profession", the role of management consulting evolved from knowledge broker to running entire operations within companies, sometimes with disastrous results (Enron). A persuasive argument for reassesing what "professionalism" really means in terms of management consulting.

4.0 out of 5 stars Solid, practical business advice for consultants, too, 30 Jan 2008
Consultants in private practice can benefit greatly from the business methods in this book, now in its 22nd edition. Especially useful are the techniques for establishing and tracking true costs, and creating appropriate billing structures. A bit UK-centric (especially on taxes) for international consulting practices, but very useful and serious. Recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars Very useful for consultants, too, 30 Jan 2008
Stout and Grand's book on private practice in the mental health professions has direct relevance and practical, realistic tips for consultants in private practice, and for those considering "hanging up a shingle." Good advice on calculating if you can actually afford it, step by step marketing techniques, and once you are there, sensible strategies for dealing with the ups and downs of going it alone. Highly recommended.
