4.0 out of 5 stars Great Pillows, 17 Sep 2012
In the past, i have bought extra large, memory foam type pillows where your head sinks in. I decided to get 4 smaller pillows instead this time. The pillows are very comfy, very bouncy, and support your head and neck very well- your head does not sink into them as with other pillows. At the price these are offered at, theyre fantastic!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Brilliant, 1 Sep 2006
Absolutely brilliant. Starts every chapter with the basic science if you're not familiar, then goes into a reasonable amount of detail. Great pictures, which really aid understanding, and good analogies to back up more complex ideas. Recommended for Biomed/Neuroscience/Medical/Biology students in 1st year !

4.0 out of 5 stars I'm not sure about previous comments, 1 Sep 2006
I feel I need to clear something up: the dialogues ARE recited fully on the CD! And when refering to tones it clearly shows in the book the order in which it is being voiced on the tape, i.e. tone 1 ,tone2 etc.

I believe the CD recording is actually quite good, the only problem being that Chinese is very difficult (although NOT impossible) to pronounce just from listening carefully, with no native instruction.

I gave the book 4 stars because I'm not sure I liked the style of the book- it's different from other TY language books in its presentation. However chinese is a very different language, and certain things are handled particularly well (grammar points and chinese idiom).

I looked at TY Beginners (mandarin) Chinese at a bookshop, and that seemed more my style (in the style of "beginners japanese"), however it lacked a bit in depth.

IT IS ESSENTIAL that you buy the CD with this Book! The words are not pronounced anything like they look.

5.0 out of 5 stars Advanced biology, 17 Nov 2005
Presentation: EXCELLENT, this is a very nice, colorful book. Chapters are clearly divided up, and each spread of 2 pages aims to cover one aspect of each chapter. The book is very well structured and has exam practice questions after each section, as well as questions on each page, aimed at getting you to think a bit further.
Content: Brilliant! Has everything required for, i would say, all alevel courses. If youre following AQA, then it even covers every one of the possible options unit at A2. Explanations are clear and very detailed, giving you more of an understanding than just knowledge. Each little section of each chapter starts with an introduction, putting into perspective why the information contained is relevant.
My only complaints: i find certain concepts difficult to get my head round, and 90% of the time this book really helps. It's just occasionaly ive been taught something, not understood it, read my book, still not understood it. That said, everyone understands things in different ways and perhaps i just didnt twig? Also, while certain sections go into immense, rich detail, others shy off a little- only really the explaination of how a nerve impulse works and the minute details of respiration.
OVERALL: excelent book, worth the money, great study aid- is NOT a textbook like the ones you get in school- this book could much more easily be used for self-study!! buy it!
