I love this album, but from the cover art shown it does not appear to have been remastered. Amazon - get your act together!

5.0 out of 5 stars Classic, 12 Mar. 2014

Quick review to say that this is a nearly-forgotten (acoustic) classic from the Bitches Brew era. If this HAS been remastered then it's a great day for music. A masterpiece.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent, 4 Mar. 2014

I came across the Kindle edition of this by chance, and it deserves five stars for - if nothing else - pointing me towards Village Green Preservation Society, which had passed me (among many) by at the time, and fully deserves its "classic" reputation. Andrew Hickey is an excellent writer, clearly with a wide knowledge of music, very perceptive with a great sense of humour, and has much that is interesting and enlightening to say about one of our greatest (and enigmatic) songwriters.

I would also recommend his books on the Beatles Mono recordings and the Beach Boys.

2.0 out of 5 stars You pays your money..., 25 Jan. 2014

and take your choice etc, so if you are a Miles sceptic this book is for you. For a lover of Miles's music like me this was a very annoying book and a waste of money. Dr Trethewey clearly knows his jazz, and is a musician, appreciative of most of Miles's sidemen throughout his career. However, and a slight problem in a book about Miles, he doesn't rate Miles as a trumpeter, though he does seem to regard him as a fine musician. I found it difficult to carry on reading this book having read that, according to Trethewey, the My Funny Valentine album/concert is littered with Miles's fluffs. If you know Miles you know that he did make the odd mistake, putting himself on the line every night; however, if you agree that what one hears on MFV is a trumpeter trying but failing to play the notes then, as I said, this is for you. Ian Carr, a trumpeter himself, was a great admirer of Miles's music and wrote a magnificent biography; along with Paul Tingen's Miles Beyond, which looks at the "electric" Miles, and George Cole's The Last Miles these are, in my view, the best books about Miles Davis. I would also recommend Ashley Kahn's Kind of Blue, Richard William's The Blue Moment (both about Kind of Blue) and Richard Cook (something of a sceptic) It's About That Time. Unfortunately, Dark Prince comes nowhere near any of these.

for alerting me to the fact that, once again, the Kindle edition is a mess. How ANNoying...this is fast becoming a world of fancy gadgets displaying our growing illiteracy.

Long Ago and Far Away: James Taylor - His Life and Music: Long Ago and Far Away - His Life and Music
Long Ago and Far Away: James Taylor - His Life and Music: Long Ago and Far Away - His Life and Music
Price: £7.91

5.0 out of 5 stars Buy it, 18 Jun. 2013
This is first-class biography of a first-class musician and songwriter by a first-class writer and journalist. There is a lot of detail of Taylor's antecedents, but the family history is a fascinating and tragic one, and to try to understand someone it helps to have an understanding of their family background. As beautifully written as JT's songs.

4.0 out of 5 stars Would be five stars but...., 25 Feb. 2013

...in the Kindle edition many of the illustrations are illegible, some of them nothing but black rectangles. Thankfully, the text is OK - unusual in my experience of Kindle. Schama is a master, and I'm looking forward to reading Volume 3 - probably the Kindle edition, so more black rectangles no doubt. Does anyone actually check Kindle editions to see whether they're up to standard? It would appear not.

I was given a bracelet as a Christmas present. I loved it, but it has just broken - the string snapped. That means it lasted just over a month.

5.0 out of 5 stars Five stars - but for which CD?, 7 Jan. 2013
This review is from: Kind Of Blue (Audio CD)
Of course this is one of the greatest albums ever made in any genre. But I see that Amazon are selling numerous editions, since the copyright has expired and everyone is out to make a few bucks off the back of this sublime work of art. Each of those editions carries the same customer reviews, though one product itself may vary markedly from another in terms of sound as well as liner notes etc. Yet Amazon is quite happy, apparently, to preside over this chaos, where the customer may purchase something only to discover it is not exactly the product as advertised (and recommended by 180+ customers). Add to this the general sloppiness in product descriptions (it would help if those responsible knew something about music) and the advantages of being able to go into a shop and buy exactly what one wants are clear - unfortunately, there aren't that many shops left, are there Amazon?

5.0 out of 5 stars At last..., 5 Dec. 2012
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: Gordon Smith (Kindle Edition)
a biography of one of the greatest footballers of all time, by his son Tony. I always knew that Gordon Smith had class, both on and off the pitch, and this book proves it. I had no idea he was such a jazz fan - that must have made him something of a rarity in the world of football... In his extraordinary career, Smith won League Championship medals with Hibs, Hearts and Dundee, was a pioneer, along with his Hibs team mates, in European Cup football, also playing in Europe with Hearts and, incredibly, Dundee, at the age of thirty-seven in a fantastic run during the 1962-63 season. They don't make them like Gordon Smith any more. A quibble - the Kindle edition has no photographs. Perhaps this should be flagged up by Amazon, so the customer can take an informed choice between the Kindle and hardcover editions.
