Was advertised as 32" - I assumed that meant it would fit someone with a 32" waist - NOT that it was actually 32" long. So useless really!

4.0 out of 5 stars Little bit more thought..., 9 Dec. 2014

Top marks for the music - Lola has always been one of my favourite Kinks albums - bought on vinyl when it originally came out. I have deducted a star though because there is no digipack like all the other Kinks Deluxe albums and they haven't included a couple of tracks from the previous reissue. Bit shoddy, I say!

This review is from: Island Presents: Roots (Audio CD)
I totally agree with the previous review-this is an excellent mixture of the well known and obscure. However, one of the reasons I bought this album was for disc1, track 13, Kude a bamba by Ras Midas. I bought this track on Black Swan 45 when it came out in the 70's, and was looking forward to having it on CD. However my CD plays Tedious by Junior Murvin instead! Disapointed! Apart from that an excellent compilation.

5.0 out of 5 stars Wrong version, 29 Sept. 2010
Just thought I'd better let people know that the version of Stand up by Eric Donaldson is NOT the Upsetter version - don't know what version it is, but it's rubbish compared to the Black Ark version - get it together Trojan!

5.0 out of 5 stars 3 classic Lee Perry albums, 2 Sept. 2007
This 2 CD set comprises three Jamaican Lee Perry albums - "Scratch the Super Ape", "Return of the Super Ape" and "Roast fish, collie weed and cornbread".The first of these was released in 1976, the other two in 1978. They are all prime Lee Perry albums recorded at Black Ark studio, and feature the classic Black Ark sound.

"Scratch the Super Ape" was released in the UK by Island records under the title "Superape" with a slightly different running order. It was also supposed to be a different mix, but it sounds pretty much the same to me. For this CD it sounds like this album was dubbed from disc.

The other two albums were only released in Jamaica, although Island did release "Dreadlocks in moonlight" (here called "Big neck police") and "Roast fish and cornbread" as singles in the UK.

In my opinion they are not as ground breaking as "Superape" but they are still excellent albums, full of bells ringing, babies crying and cows mooing, all built on that classic, organic Black Ark sound!

There are seven bonus tracks tacked on to the end, and the first four of these comprise the dub plate "From creation" (vocal and three dubs). This is the track used for "Underground root" on the "Superape" album.

This is followed by the A and B side of the Jamaican "Roast fish and cornbread" single.

The final track is "OK Corral" by U-Roy from 1970. This spaghetti-western inspired track formed the basis for the title track on "Return of the super ape".

The CD packaging is a bit of a let down - I feel Trojan should have given such an important release the full colour slip cover treatment with some large colour pictures of the original covers, and maybe some photos of the Black Ark.

Overall 10/10 for the music, 7/10 for the packaging.
